Hello,

I've been perscribed Prozac from the doctors, I've taken 20mg a day for the last 4 days. I'm going to stop taking it as I've read up on way too many horror stories.

Basically my question is, I would like take a tab of acid on Saturday. I know Prozac makes it unable to trip, but if I stop the Prozac now, will that be enough time for it to leave my system and feel the effect of the acid?

Cheers and happy holidays

Nope, you need to wait a good 2 weeks or more.

You shouldn't stop taking prozac because of other people's stories about it. If you're not getting negative effects there is no reason to stop - you've likely been prescribed it for a reason!

Thanks for the reply.

Do you know of any physical dangers of taking the conpbination? Or will it just not have any effect at all?

would you take prozac if you were depressed sekio? i wouldnt... unless i was considering suicide that is (Nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, anxiety, trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, tiredness, sweating, or yawning may occur. )

The main risk of mixing psychedelics with an SSRI like fluoxetine (prozac) is the potential for serotonin syndrome. It's rare and probably wouldn't happen, but a quick google search of the symptoms and I'm sure you'll agree that it simply isn't worth the risk. That being said, I know several people who have tripped many times whilst taking antidepressants who have suffered no ill effects, but it certainly isn't advisable.

From the feedback I'm thinking against it
I was just thinking as I've only taken four prozacs that they may have not effected my brain chemistry to the full extent?

You've obviously not been properly depressed. It's hell on earth and anything which stops it is a wonderful gift. Note that depression doesn't mean a bad mood, it's a clinical syndrome.

OP: I've never found that SSRIs have any noticeable effect on my ability to trip or that they presented any danger. However because of the small but present risk of seretonin syndrome, I would start with lower than usual doses. They do utterly ruin the MDMA experience though.

Talk to your doctor before stopping the Prozac

You'll be OK, if you're actually getting LSD and not a research chemical. I have taken LSD while on prozac and yes you still do trip just as hard on prozac as you do not on it. Do not stop taking your medication just to take acid. If you want to stop taking it talk to your doctor.

This matter has been discussed before plenty of times but there is no singular answer (apparently), some people report stronger psychedelic effects while others report the same effects, diminished effects or no effects. And for some it is problematic but not for others. It just seems unpredictable, taking SSRI's changes your serotonin householding in the brain / CNS and LSD enhances and catalyzes this system in a way by mimicking serotonin (though kinda different). I would say that taking LSD or other psychedelics on top of SSRI's poses the risk of having your changed serotonin householding out of whack potentially causing problems with functions governed by serotonin.
e.g. sleep, mood and much more.

No idea what the odds are but I wouldn't risk it. Also sekio has a point: the reasons for taking prozac (indications) are reasons not to take psychedelics at all (so-called contra-indications), say for example depression the #1 indication for this anti-depressant.

4 days is probably not long enough to really get used to prozac's effects so when you would stop you should return to normal relatively quickly but it is not smart at all, you can't keep avoiding or postponing taking medication - choose one or the other and go with it for a while, don't switch or mix and match. And discuss it with your doc when you can. It's confidential.

i have been clinically depressed from 13-20, do you take an anti-depressant atm? how long have you been on it? do you want to rely on an addiction to a drug that has a horrible withdrawal syndrome and fucks with your libido long term after long term usage and provides no respite after discontinuing use and only serves to numb depression into bland neutrality? if all the people sensitive to emotions took mood stabilisers we would not have all the great art in the world, once you find what you can give to the world from your heart and can pursue that you wont feel like you hate yourself so much

The point of taking anti-depressants is mostly to take the sensitive edge off for a while to enable a person to change things in his/her life without suffering too much, so that after those changes he or she can wane off the anti-depressants and be more functional, and give it another shot.

I am taking very low dose mirtazapine right now (7,5 mg each night though I am quite sensitive to it) for that purpose and/or for the off-label uses like to help with sleep and appetite. I also have a lot less anxiety / fear now. But it's weird stuff and after my current script for an extra month or 2 I am going to discuss going off it.

Taking AD's more chronically, especially fully intended for depression (e.g. SSRIs) at therapeutic doses is tricky and dubious I agree it is far from ideal. IMO each person has to weigh the positives and the negatives. I have no good alternative for long-term clinical depressions. But I suggest you be careful dismissing all AD use altogether.

If you want to discuss it more, please find centralized threads on the topic in due time instead of highjacking a psychedelic thread. :) But take your time.

For 7 years I took citalopram for 6 months per year to combat seasonal effective disorder. Yes it fucked my libido and sexual function (it never really returned to normal over the summer either). It also numbed me emotionally and gave me jaw-clench. It stopped me wanting to make art and I lost passion for writing and photography. But the side effects were 100% preferable to the hell that I would have suffered without them.

Now I've been on Agomelatine for the past 3 weeks and it appears to be my magic bullet. It has all the benefits of ssri's without the side effects. It also acts as a non-addictive sleeping pill so it kills seasonal based insomnia too.

I've taken about 8 or 9 different anti depressants over the years so I'm a good person to ask if you have any questions about them :-)

ssri's are shit in my experience. unless your severely clinically depressed (are you plagued by thoughts of suicide? or do you just feel a bit down...) they are shit and if your a little bit bipolar they send you crazy, also when you drink on them its loads of fun so its easy to develop problems with alcohol

If I believed in god I would have thanked him/her/it/whateverthefuck for the existence of ssris. Without them I would have spent six months in bed every year since 1994.

I feel like I've derailed the thread and I'm sorry. For a low mood, they're probably the eqivalent of using a sledgehammer to kill an ant and there's no doubt that they're over prescribed (particularly by North Americans). But for crippling, chronic depressive symptoms they are quite literally a lifesaver.

By the way, I thank Hoffman for the science that led to antidepressants.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
After all these horror stories I think I'm just going to leave the Prozac completely.

I've taken 4 doses of 20mg. How long do you think my brain chemistry will be back to normal?

Prozac has a really long half life. It will take at least 8-10 days to be out of your system. Please though, speak to your doctor before quitting. None of us can advise you properly because none of us know what it was prescribed for.
