re:ebola,
many conservatives and moderate conservatives have a tendency to think close mindedly (xenophobic etc), you admitted. and that's what the original study was getting at, right? so the conclusions are not fatally flawed according to your own logic

This isn't quite what I meant. Rather, experimental probes designed to detect far right politics tend to detect mainly xenophobia and ethnic chauvinism vastly eclipsing the societal norm, and it is at such extremes that these conservative identity-politics correlate with cognitive deficits. I haven't seen any study indicating how this trend scales with more muted xenophobia. And even if it scales monotonically, we can't implicate rightism as such as directly causal.

I beleive in ongoing and consistant govt reduction for aid to the poor. All charity/social assistance should eventually come from private groups like Red Cross/Salv Army/UnitedWay,corporations,churches/Synagogues/Mosques...etc, and individuals. Americans will become more compasionate and caring when they are free to choose where and how much they give. It's human nature for most people to accept responsibility for helping others... and they will do it more when not forced too.

QWE- OK... one could say I asked for this and I'm trying to take a positive view but not easy when referred to as dumb and ignorant. Damn near everytime I see a BL response to someone with traditional values... along comes name calling and other attempts to humiliate and demean. I'm surprised the usual hate, fear and bigotry wasn't included... If I wanted to stoop to the same level of making fun of the fuck out of your values...You would first need to lay them out in the open... which I'm sure won't happen

If so, I could degrade your thoughts/beliefs in a similar way by calling you a moron, idiot, noodle... etc. But it serves no good purpose. BTW it must be extremely frustrating for you to live in a world where dumbass ignorant people are prevalent.

Your grade system is flawed... but not as you might think. First off... You defintely wouldn't have had the opportunity to grade me in college because I would have surely dropped your course after one or two lectures. grade-WD

Secondary school could have been a possiblity but I went to a traditional high school with the grade scales were as follows: A 94-100, B 86-93, C 78-85, D 70-77, F below 70. So according to your "adjusted" grade I would still fail....

But I doubt that would have happened because I would probably have skipped enough classes to get EXPELLED.... which would have limited my job opps to digging ditches for many yrs. Eventually my back would have given out and I'd be dependent on the govt for SS, food stamps, Medicaide...etc. Therefore, I'd be a democrat today and blindly following you guys like everyone else clinging to govt support.

Anyway, my turn for the grades... You get D- for humor, and a D+ for effort... :D and an A+ for intelphakenlectualism.

OK... I'm out there now so take your best shit... I mean shot. The only thing I ask... is rather than [or before] criticizing, have the courtsey to do the same as I did.
Okay then. You asked for it. But each of these could turn into a thread all by themselves. It's kind of hard to do this all at once, because there is a lot to cover...

Like qwe, I think you are well meaning, but misguided. Most conservatives are.
I'm against granting unconditional amnesty for 20 million illegals.
Most people are against that. Unconditional means that all of them will get citizenship, even the ones who committed crimes. Bad idea.

But what would you do with them instead? If you are a libertarian, we can't deport them all. That would require massive government interference into people's lives, and a big increase in police powers.

Here's what I think:

I think national borders are a horrible thing. The place where you are born should determine nothing, instead of everything. If you are unlucky enough to be born in a third world country, you will probably live in poverty all your life and be treated horribly by your government. There is no good reason why those people should have to go through that. National borders make it possible for there to be such a huge disparity in wealth and human rights. So, I am against them.

But I know it's not really practical to get rid of them right now. So, I think that immigrants should be treated decently. They are just trying to get a better life, and if I was in their position, I would do the same thing.

*I'm for the rights of individuals [adults] to consume anything they choose [including drugs] as long as the consumption doesn't harm, influence,[or potentially] injure another. I hope and prefer my choice to use anything considered unhealthy... doesn't influence others to do the same, especially kids and young adults.
*I'm against all laws which would jail an individual for buying or using drugs.
I agree with that, for the most part.
*I beleive in ALL free speech including [non required] teacher-lead prayer in classrooms and school sponsored events.
This would end up just like the pledge of allegiance. It's not mandatory, but if you refuse to do it, teachers and students will put tons of pressure on you. So, it might not be mandatory according to the rules and laws, but in practice, it will be. That violates the rights of non-religious people.

I believe that separation between church and state is important. Public schools are supported by the state, so they have to be neutral when it comes to religion.
*I believe the government should be kept out of the matter of abortion, leaving the question to each person for their own consideration. No taxpayer-funded abortions
So, it shouldn't ban abortion, or support it? I disagree.

The world is very overpopulated, and this is causing massive amounts of environmental damage and resource shortages. Also, children deserve the best life possible. If they are unplanned for, then their quality of life will probably be diminished from what it would be if they were planned. So, I think the government should subsidize abortions and birth control.
*I support all rights to private property and protection of my own property.
What does that mean? It's kind of vague.

I think a lot of property was 'earned' through unethical business practices or inherited. Both are illegitimate ways to gain property, in my opinion. So, I think we should change our property rights to reflect that. Also, I think the right to property is much less important than other rights, like the right to live, and the right to a dignified existence. You shouldn't be allowed to shoot robbers, or hoard massive amounts of money, because those violate other people's rights.

*I'm for equal civil rights for all individuals regardless of race, age, religion...etc
*I'm against "affirmative action" or any kind of govt intervention or assumption one group should have an advantage or better access to anything over another.
These two things contradict each other. White people have advantages and better access to things than minorities do. White people always receive affirmative action. From cradle to grave. That is why minorities need it too. Because things are not equal right now. Whites and minorities do not have equal rights.

I believe affirmative action is necessary to correct the injustices and inequalities which are built into American society.
*I'm against govt subsidies to business, labor, or any special interest... govt should not have power to progrssively tax [individuals] or business for purpose of income redistribution.
It's hard to critique this when you don't explain the reasons why you believe it.

Progressive taxation is a good idea. First, because the rich can pay more without having their quality of life significantly reduced. And second, because the rich are the people who have benefited the most from the way things are set up, so it makes sense that they should pay back the most to the government.

I also think that economic inequality is such a bad thing, that it needs to be dealt with by the government. First, it reduces demand in the economy, because the rich spend a much lower percentage of their income than other people do. Second, it makes people politically unequal. Those with the most money have more political power, because they can afford lobbying and advertising. Third, inequality has a lot of negative effects on people. It makes everyone less healthy, makes countries politically unstable, increases the rates of mental illness, etc.

*I'm against total dependence on govt to protect me from criminals. I have a right to carry and use a firearm for defense of my family and self.
I don't know of anyone who doesn't believe that people have a right to defend their own lives if they are threatened.

I think people are mostly too dumb and irresponsible to own guns. But I also think the cat is out of the bag at this point. It's pointless to try and get rid of them now. It would be impossible. Instead, we should try to learn about the social and psychological causes of violence, and work to stop those things from happening in the first place. Also, mandatory safety classes, waiting periods and background checks are a good idea.
*I don't believe govt should have power to redistribute wealth, or to control or manage trade.
This again?

I think the government should have the power to manage trade. We need to protect ourselves from things like melamine tainted baby formula, and we also need to protect our businesses from unfair competition.
*I believe the govt should "butt out" of our childrens educational process. Schools should be managed locally. Power should be returned to parents to direct the education of their children, without govt intervention. Parents should have control of all funds spent for their children's education.
Why? Most parents know virtually nothing about education. I think teachers should be in control of the schools. Not parents.

I believe public schooling is very important in a democracy, because citizens need to be educated to vote. I also think that all schools should have equal funding per student, and should all be forced to teach science, math, english and other subjects like that. Christianity is for churches. It has no place in schools.
*I don't believe in Social Security and it should be phased out. It's up to the individual and family to secure their own future.
What about poor people? Do you think we should just let them starve when they are too old to work?

I think social security is very important. Most elderly people lived in poverty before it was created. They regularly died from starvation and exposure. I don't want that to start happening again.

*I beleive in ongoing and consistant govt reduction for aid to the poor.
That is naive. History shows that you are wrong. Most people couldn't care less about you, if you aren't an immediate family member.

Charity is not nearly enough. Poor people are socially and geographically isolated from middle class and rich people. The fact that people think poor people are lazy and stupid is proof of this. The problems of the poor are "out of sight, out of mind" for most other people, so there would not be nearly enough donations. Charity is not a realistic replacement for social safety nets.

1) you can take it in good humor. i hope people know i mean it as such

2) all of my perspectives are clearly laid out throughout this forum like dog poo throughout my backyard. if i have time i'll make a list like yours

i thought everyone felt this way

you demonstrate that you don't understand my humor, and you take it seriously. F at your attempt to grade my grade

intelphakenlectualism? i'm not trying to sound any more or less intellectual than i am

Marsh... Who should be guiding the misguided?

Yes... Illegals should be deported and our borders made more secure.

Tax money should go to "schools" that teach what the parents believe. At the very least, private school tuition should be a tax deduction and a credit would be even more fair. If parents don't give a fuck... let the public schools teach their kids anything and everything. I know it's cruel but the gene pool always has been unfair.

It's wrong for my tax money to fund your child, girlfriend, wifes... abortion. Especially if I believe this is killing an innocent baby.

The govt should not be able to [double] tax my income/assets after death.

Affirmative action encourages reverse discrimination while promoting mediocrity, inefficiency, incompetence, and resentment.

OK... guns should be licensed but don't think an IQ test is needed.

A competitive market place should control supply and demand and nothing good [for the long term] comes from govt intervention.

A good example of abuse/waste is... nonprofit organizations with their own political agenda which receive federal funds and use these subsidies from taxpayers for lobbying purposes.

Once again the "haves" should not be required to take care of the "have nots" and the govt has no business forcing this. Entitlements should be gradually phased downward so Americans and decide for themselves where their charity goes. If people don't want to contribute... they should not be forced too.

The size of out govt has grown enormously over the last several decades and we're at the point of no return on spending and waste. WW2 brought us out of the last situation like this... what will do it this time? The govt has grown into a massive piece of shit [inside all americans] and it's time for major bowel movement.

Original post, bait or not, is just a prime example on why the left think they are morally superior to others.
You see it all the time around these parts.

This is very risky reasoning. Abortion is a medical procedure. By making this statement, you suggest that no government money should be spent on healthcare of any kind just because you think it's wrong. By the same logic, I can claim that it's "wrong" to keep people alive on life support or to take them off of it. I could claim that no Medicare money should be spent on cancer because it will just kill you eventually anyways. It's just as dumb to suggest that people must be kept on life support forever because to do otherwise is wrong as it would be to suggest that abortion is wrong, when it comes to legal issues.

great generalization, and very representive sample (bluelight, being more liberal on avg than the avg american, is going to seem more arrogantly liberal -- social circles reinforce themselves, etc)

that's one reason the internet is great; we can leave your cultural/social baggage behind and get on with our global discussion :)

re: subdude, that post isn't asking for a grade. it's asking for a diagnosis :)

I'm not sure where I fall on the left/right wing spectrum. I'm for abortion but against gun control. I am for universal health care but against health care to the extent we have in the UK (people can get cosmetic surgery on the NHS if it is determined to affect mental health; IMO if you find it beneficial mentally you can contribute fiancially). I'm a student who thinks students should pay tuition fees and make a contribution to the institutes we benefit from. I agree with the conservatives spending cuts but think drugs should be decriminalised.

All that aside, I can see why 'liberals' may get the impression that they are smarter. Yet I also think it is because they defer decisions more easily. Personally I think American conservatives suffer somewhat from a cold war mentality and the liberals are too quick to jump on any bandwagon they think will piss the conservatives off.

Sorry but I don't see any reasonable comparision to a healthy woman wanting a taxpayer funded abortion... and an ill patient receiving health care. BTW I have a 61 yo cousin on medicaid who has kidney failure and his dr essentially told him his best option was to be made comfortable and await the enevitible. My cuz told the doc he wasn't afraid of death but not ready to go yet... and told him to get the dialysis machine out. So make no mistake... medicaid providers are ok with letting people die [by witholding treatment] or killing fetuses by providing "treatment".

Abortion [without medical/health complications to mom and/or child] is an elective procedure provided to a healthy person. If you're willing to pay for my wifes abortion then I also want you to pay for my cosmetic surgery to improve my self confidence. I'm poor and anti-social because i'm ugly... I want a nose job, tummy tuck, and face lift and I want you and other taxpayers to pay the bill.

QWE- thats my diagnosis- poor, ugly, and anti social.

but you're okay with babies being stillborn or women miscarrying because of lack of medical care? 8) it's all or nothing.
