Why is Wellbutrin making me even more sad? Isn't it an antidepressant?

I'm taking Wellbutrin for depression but what I realize is that it makes me even more sad. Why is that? It's an antidepressant. It should work the other way around.

How long have you been taking it?
Not every antidepressant is right for every person. Talk to your doctor, you may need to try something else.

Part of the problem may beis most anti-depressants may not make you feel better, they stop you from feeling worse. I used to call Zoloft-"the glass floor" . It would stop me from falling down the hole of depression. Elevating my mood, that was a different issue.

Wellbutrin like all drugs effects everyone differently. Like all anti-depressants Wellbutrin can cause mood swings, emotional liability, suicidal ideation and during the first few weeks of treatment a increased risk of suicide attempts. This is a black box warning on every anti-depressant i do believe. Some are far worse then others for side effects and Wellbutrin caries less side effects then most for most people it seems. I found it to be one of the few anti-depressants that i can not only tolerate but actually have work well for my Bipolar depression. It's a Norepinephrine Dopamine reuptake inhibitor so it's completely different then SSRI's or SNRI's. Generally i find that i notice a improvement after about maybe a week with Wellbutrin and notice a big change after 2 weeks if i have been on 300mg's a day for a week.

Dysphoria can be a side effect of starting any anti-depressant treatment and that sounds very much like what you are experiencing here. I would strongly recommend going back to your doctor ASAP and telling them how the Wellbutrin is making you feel. Honestly i am no doctor but this med sounds like it's not for you.

Do you smoke cigs or use nicotine?

If so this would explain the depression .

How would smoking while taking Bupropion make the depression worse? This combination can make some people nauseous but the only interaction i have noticed here is that my cravings for nicotine go down. I can still smoke a pack and a half on 300mg's of Bupropion a day with little no side effects.
