Why does LSD tend to cause stimulation?

Don't forget the adrenergic receptors, even though the affinity is lower the stimulating effects are still there. Dopamine receptor binding on the other hand make the experience more rewarding and actually helps acquiring new behavior that came to mind during the experience. Dopamine receptor binding does cause some stimulation but my personal belief is that norepinephrine is a much more powerful stimulant and even a low-medium affinity to adrenergic receptors can cause the stimulation felt on LSD.

Yes the adrenergic receptors would increase stimulation as well. The release of epinephrine/norepinephrine and dopamine tend to cause stimulation.

roliepolie, psychedelics also heighten your senses, so even though the physical effects of larger doses of LSD may have felt toxic, it may have been your altered perception that exaggerated the effects, causing them to feel more threatening than they actually are.

LSD can be quite stimulating, but I doubt it causes any kind of stimuation that is physically dangerous, although possibly if you are approaching/exceeding the saturation point. If LSD makes you feel uncomfortably stimulated, by all means, LSD is not for you, but I don't think your intuition that LSD was posioning you is correct.

ahhhhh, so love, sex, desire you are saying it was not the toxins making me feel bad ...it was the dopamine being released in massive quantities making me feel over stimulated!!,tat makes a lot of sense and thankyou for your clarification regarding this:)

^^ Yes I would definitely say that your over-stimulating experiences with LSD are not due to toxins, although it is rare for people to feel uncomfortable over-stimulation from LSD. It is definitely stimulating, but it seems like you are particularly sensitive to LSD stimulation. Everyone reacts differently, so maybe LSD just isn't for you.

There is always a chance that the LSD you have encountered has by-products that may have increased the stimulation, and I am unsure of the toxicity of any by-products possibly contained in certain batches of LSD, but based on the amazingly tiny amount of chemical present on blotter I doubt that even if there was significant amounts of by-products in any of LSD that you have encountered that they would have significant toxic effects.

From erowid:

Its possible that poorly synthesized LSD might have other ergot derivatives in it, which might contribute to the harsh body load that some get on taking LSD. Also, the very close chemical relatives 1-Methyl-LSD and 1-Acetyl-LSD (which break down into LSD in aqueous solution) might be present in some street samples and might contribute to the harsh body load. (Petter Stafford has claimed in his _Psychedelics Encyclopedia_ that 1-Acetyl-LSD is supposedly "smoother" than d-LSD -- thus "strychnine laced acid" may acutally be pure d-LSD, while "pure lsd" may be 1-Acetyl-LSD or some substitute). And the chemicals iso-LSD and lumi-LSD which are breakdown products of LSD might contribute to the body loading on some trips, particularly via a hypothetical synergistic effect.

Its also possible that LSD itself simply causes adverse physical effects, particularly muscle cramping, in persons suceptible to it. The reported side effects of LSD (the nausea and apparent CNS stimulant effects) are commonly reported side effects of seritonergic drugs such as fluoxetine (Prozac) and buspirone (Buspar), and also are commonly reported (and typically more severe) with other psychedelics like Mescaline.

Further advice would be to avoid methylxanthines (caffiene, theophylline in tea, etc) prior to dosing. Some have noted a possible synergistic effect between them and LSD causing, or contributing, to a harsh body load during a trip.

i'm on aproximately 125mcgs right now, 3 hs 15'' after ingestion. But i'll prefer this time, to take it with a few beers/joints and some promethazine(50mgs)and 2 hours after, taking some benzos 20mgs (diazepam) to have a nice night of sleep.

Beers and joints on LSD is always a great mix. I usually have a few beers before take off to ease into the trip. Calms the nerves, without substantially affecting the trip. This may help with any over-stimulaton as well. I've never heard of taking promethazine with LSD, but I'm sure that would be great if anyone experiences over-stimulation as well.

How does promethazine alter the nature of the trip?

Enjoy the ride!
