Why DO we make heroes out of our sportspeople?

I just think it's a simple misuse of the word "hero". We certainly make role models out of our sporting greats because they strived for something and achieved it; they're all making a living out of doing something they love, and don't we all want that? They're generally average people who happened to have a special talent, just like doctors, peace corp activists, or whoever. What I don't understand is why they deserve any less recognition than anyone else who excels in their chosen field.

who are your heros Raz?
now ask yourself why?

the answer is the same...
so careful not to knock/mock mine!

I guess my heroes are people like the Dalai Lama, who has maintained a desire to help the world and to better himself spiritually despite the systematic abuse and destruction of his people and his culture....or Jesus, whom aside from any kind of religious connotations whatsoever, was a man who from all accounts tried to help those around him and who gave equal respect to everybody around him regardless of their place in society. Or on a more personal level, my mother, who overcame all kinds of abuse that would have put me in a nuthouse a long time ago, and not only raised three relatively well-adjusted children, but also helped heaps of kids who grew up in a low-income area where they weren't given much more encouragement to try and believe in themselves and to do something with their lives. Albert Van Moorst, a man who devoted his life to the underpriveleged youth of Fitzroy and Collingwood, and who fought tooth and nail to establish a centre where they could go and be respected as people despite their poverty or race. The people who work for free legal centres and clinics, who give up a huge portion of their lives to be there for people who have no other options.

These people are my heroes because ultimately, they embody the traits that I aspire to. If I'm not known for anything else in my life, I want to be known for being someone who tried to help people.

Believe me, I'm not dissing sportspeople. There's nothing at all wrong with pursuing a healthy lifestyle, and like Taliana said, an amazing amount of effort and time goes into these people's lives for their careers. I have a great deal of respect for their discipline and their drive and their dedication and their skill, even though I may not have any particular interest in what they do.

I guess to explain what I'm getting at....I want to get into writing and drawing comics. There are writers and artists in the comic book industry whom I think are incredibly talented, and whom I would love to work with and learn from. But they're not my heroes, because as good as they are at what they do, all they really do is entertain. My heroes are people who actually help others. Who put others' needs before their own. I'm not in awe of someone who is talented, though I do respect that talent and ambition. I am in awe of people who live to help others...there are countless people like this in our world, and I'm just wondering why someone who moves to a third world country to try and give people there some kind of access to medical facilities doesn't receive anywhere near the same attention that Ian Thorpe does for being able to swim really fast.

So I'm not knocking or mocking, just wondering why...

Oh, and thanks to everyone for answering, makes for some interesting reading...

i agree with the sentiment of your post raz, and i too have heros outside the sports world. however, i find room for both and on many different levels. the media though prefer the popular targets and breed the cycle of the celebrity culture and feed it to the dumb masses who love it like puppies choking down some horrible smelling can food.
but that's just how it is, try to not to think so much about it. ;)

also how would you feel about your mum being as famous as, and a national hero the likes of steve waugh?

do we want jesus as our next australian of the year?

and could Albert Van Moorst hit a century in both innings at old trafford versus the poms? :):):)

^^^ we may not have Jesus as our australian of the year... but our YOUNG australian of the year is an incredible wonderful person who i admire greatly and have had the privilage of meeting, speaking to and listening to their incredible stories...

Hugh Evans, who won young austrlian of the year is an aazing person who at age 20 has dedicated his life to helping others. at age 20 has his own foundation dedicated to the cause. He has dedicated his life to fighting injustice and poverty. People like Hugh are the kind of people who i hold high in my esteem and believe SHOULD be considered heros. .

i dont know whether its just me, or whether i have the wrong idea about what a hero is, but when i think of the word "hero" i think of people who save lives(doctors, surgeons, but in particular nurses, paramedics and ambo's- many many more lives would be lost without the dedication and skill of the ambos, and people who deserve far more credit than they recieve are the nurses without nurses who would ultimatly car for the sick post-operation etc etc), fight wars (where would australia be without the service men and women who in the past have done so much to protect our freedom, fight bushfires (in a country which is so arid and so fire-prone every bushfire season its a huge collaboration of VOLUNTEERS who go out and protect OUR homes, OUR loved ones. its the people who bring even just a little speck of humanity into the world (social workers, people who go and help people in developing countries just because they want to bring a little mor elight into someones life.) And in particular the people who fight injustice - be it some kid standing up to the bully in the school play ground, to the people who go out and fight poverty, the people who fight ANY of the "isms" and the people who do the 40 hr famine every year...

these arent trivial issues.

whether or not Australia wins the next rugby match is. i dont care how patriotic you may be, but ultimatley people dont suffer, people dont die, people dont lose theyre freedom if one match is lost.

the sports people are more than welcome to their "idol" status, as are the musicians, the artists etc. but i feel the term "hero" should be reserved for the people who are helping the world throught their acts of humanity, bravery, through their dedication to helping others, saving others, putting their own lives life on the line to help another, basically doing the things that dont receive the credit they deserve becsue they have a great love for otehr people... they are who should be crowned as heros

^^ I agree totally......i agree that sport is an important part of life, it is an important part of australias character as a nation...but, as Bloss said, "people dont suffer, people dont die, people dont lose theyre freedom if one match is lost".

I think that is the main thing....when it comes down to it all, it is JUST a game....thats all....people like the woman who invented spray on skin for burns victims should get it....

PS....John Howard needs to be shot =D

John Howard won't need to be shot, the massive swing to Latham at the next election will be good enough. If John Howard couldn't even give England their medals after the world cup with a shred of dignity, he'll be filthy when Latham gets in charge and finally points this country back in the right direction

I'm not so sure Latham will be that good....be agree little Johnny was has more than enough time. Well probably only see him again on re-runs of Fast Forward then :D
