Goal: write a 50,000 word novel starting November 1st, and ending November 30th. The point is to simply write 50,000 words (which works out to ~175 pages), quality does NOT matter.

Winners are determined by submitting your novel for word count verification only.

Check out the website for more details, and if you are doing it, we should make a list of friends to add for "support" =D

I dunno... :\

I kind of thought it sounded like a fun idea, but reading the site makes it pretty obvious that it's not at all about the actual craft of writing but more making fun of it? Spouting 50,000 words of crap in a month doesn't make you a novelist any more than putting raw mince meat on a plate makes you a cook.

I do like the idea though.....if anyone's interested in taking it seriously I'd be up for it... :)

I think there are 2 types of people which enter:
1. those like you described, who are probably 12-15 year old girls who will write "pony" 50,000 times so they can say they did it.

2. then there are those who are English majors, professors, grad students, or just lovers of reading and writing. They will likely struggle harder to finish, but their product will be as polished as 50,000 words can be in only a thirty day period. I happen to fall into the second category, as it sounds like you do. So do it! :P

There is a list of books on their website which have been published and distributed through Amazon.com as a result of this "contest"

Maybe I should have spent more than five minutes reading the site before casting judgement... ;)

Hmmmm.....it's a challenge!

I'm gonna do it!!! :D

=D

I know there is gonna be more people on here doing it too...

I'm trying to figure out a plot before Thursday :o

Thanks for the tip-off - just registered with on the nano site with my bluelight username.

Question is...do I churn out 50,000 words of adlibbed i. plot, ii. subtext, iii. character development and iv. social relevance - in 15 days and then spend 15 days making it work

or

Formulate a stong framework I can build on (where factors i - iv are well defined), write it in 30 days and then decide the concept doesn't work at all!

You can tell I'm an eternal optimist - oh well, this does sound potentially fun.

It doesn't really matter what you do. The ultimate goal is 50,000 words in the month. The founders of the contest are really just challenging us to write a novel, no matter who ridiculous or infantile it is. This can also be a springboard for further editing, polishing on your material, and eventual publication.

So if you want to produce a polished novel in 30 days, go for it. If you are struggling to write 50,000 words, your product will probably less polished, but at least you've started on the path towards being a published author!

by the way, my username over there is: HighLife

I'll add you to my friends list.

here is info about adding friends: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/1018851

currently the system is disabled, and will be functional on the 1st of November or sooner.

you read my mind - couldn't work out where the tab was/why it wasn't obvious how to add...

It's a tantalising word count because it makes me think of my favourite novels and ask 'at what point do we have get to word 50,000'? I'm currently reading 'Oryx and Crake' by Margaret Atwood (not especially impressed so far) and that book uses a fairly large font, had an average of 396 words per page and is only 378 pages long but feels lightweight/insufficient somehow...

The problem, is that even this 'lightweight' novel would contain almost 150,000 words...hmm - I think I'm going to have to learn the meaning of the word succint and fast!

Technically, the distinction between a novel and a novella occurs at 40,00 words.

I'm thinking something along the lines of Albert Camus' The Stranger. I traded the book on BookMooch, but I think it was around 125 pages. The Stranger is regarded as a very good book, so short length doesn't mean it can't be good.

so far I've got 1,592 words, but I have no idea where the story is going.

I really don't think I'm designed to write novels. Perhaps I'll try my hand at short stories. Something like Hemingway's "Snows of Kilimanjaro"

My deficiency in relation to producing a novel, is that I am drawn towards screenplay/tv related 'stuff'.

I knocked out a truly dreadful sitcom last year (maybe 2005 - I forget) whilst collaborating with a friend (my advice - if you have the slighest feeling that he/she has a different defintion of funny then dont work together).

I finally came up with a plotline that I liked today but I'm always nervous about how such ideas will work 'on the page' (my mind = too stimulatory media dependent, 'thinks' in visuals).

BTW - finished reading 'Oryx and Crake' yesterday - truly awful and I'm keen to read the amazon reviews that'll no doubt talk about an inciteful social commentary or a darkly accurate depiction of the worst case scenario. I haven't seen a single review, so if any comments mirror my feelings, I 'feel' they (like myself) have called Margaret Atwoods bluff.

yeah it is getting hit by like a million people a day.

it gets better as the month goes on.

or you could just quit like I did on the second day :D

sticking to poetry for now :|

i can't really write more than 1000 words an hour if i want it to make sense. but i do have 50 hours to spare this month so we'll see how it goes.

i'm thinking i'll just pick one of those lame "it was a dark and stormy night" intro's and go crazy from there.

edit: ended up finding a way to mesh "never within a definable moment was it not a bright and clear morning sky," instead... that's my joke on 'once upon a time' and 'dark and stormy night' =D

under 'echo off' if you want to add me. so far i got just over my thousand words for the day. no idea where it's going except that i can only reach the 50k word mark if i keep it relative to myself. even so i'm wishing myself luck XD

Hmm... everything I've written is interesting to me but I don't think anyone else would want to read it - nor would I like the idea of a near-autobiographical account of my life out in the public domain.

Still, I think I'll write as many words as necessary for my own personal novel and sever the nanowrimo connectiom <sniff, sniff>.
