Easily San Andreas for me. GTAIV was awesome but the problem I had with it is that it really removed alot of what made GTA:SA fun in the first place (ambulance/taxi/trucking/pimping missions). I spent more time doing that then actually playing the main missions. Really excited for GTA5 though...

I can agree with this. Although GTAIV was a major improvement as far as graphics (which were just awful in the PS2 GTA's, I've been playing some San Andreas lately, and just... wow), and, much more importantly, playability and controls. Combat was simply a pain in the ass in San Andreas, while I found it extremely enjoyable in IV, and I felt as though I had much better control of my vehicles in IV. Vehicles also had a better "feel" to them, the driving system was not only more immersive, but I also got an idea of a vehicle's capabilities based on the rate of acceleration and other factors. It was possible to drive fast and not crash in GTAIV. Initially, driving was very frustrating in IV, but once I picked up some of the skills that came with more familiarity with the mechanics, it was second only to racing games in terms of maneuverability and control.

San Andreas wins by a long shot as far as "shit to do" is concerned, GTAIV basically ran out of everything except races and friendship mini-games after the story and some select side-missions were complete. And I fucking hate racing.

Yeah, San Andreas fan here too.

IV was great, but I felt it was lacking something. Although The Ballard Of Gay Tony DLC was cool, sort of reminded me of the stuff you do in the older games.

In order, San Andreas, IV, vice city, III, I, II.
