can we make this into a poll?

  • at home
  • at the stadium
  • at a bar
  • doesn't matter

i like to watch sports with other people around. i tend to lose interest if i am at home watching football by myself. on the other hand, i love the energy of being surrounded by people all cheering on the same team.

i prefer watching games live but that is not always an option. so i prefer bars that are frequented by fans of the teams i like.

I like going to sports bars on Sundays for pro football. mostly because I can watch all the games at once and keep track of my pick ems and fantasy stats.

for college games I prefer to watch the Buckeyes in the Horseshoe but I like to either watch OSU at my house with some like minded beer guzzling friends, or to a crazy shitty campus bar

^i guess i will expand on my answer because i wrote the OP with just NFL in mind. i like watching the steelers at bars that broadcast the game over their sound system. and i really hate watching steelers games at a sports bar filled with browns fans. i use my phone or laptop to keep up on my fantasy team.

i prefer to watch baseball and basketball in person, otherwise i have little interest in either sport.

college football i like watch with other buckeyes fans, i am indifferent if its a house party or a bar. i have never been to a proper college football game before :(

i will watch NHL games pretty much anywhere. when the penguins won the stanely cup, i was running from bar to bar in seattle trying to find a place that had the game on.

i think this depends on the sport. certain places are better depending on what you are watching. watching football or basketball in a bar can be fun, while watching golf in a bar might be as enjoyable as a colonoscopy. since it is football season, i will speak of football.

the stadium wins every time. more energy and less commercials! bars are good if they are full of like-minded fans. nothing worse then watching a steelers game and having browns fans there rooting for tennessee just to be deuchebags. home is nice only if i really want to hear commentary or watch for fantasy purposes.

basketball is basically the same. hockey is great at the stadium, but not as good at the bar. i find the commentary very helpful. baseball is boring no matter where it is watched.

I try to be considerate as a Steelers fan. I know I'm lucky that my team has experienced success, and I live in mid-Ohio which is a battleground of Cleveland, Cinci, and Pittsburgh fans. I don't overtly cheer for my team because why should I rub it in the face of Browns fans?

however, speaking of that Titans game. I was watching it at a sports bar and Tenn recovered the onside kick and was kind of getting back into the game, albeit very late. both the Browns and Bengals games were over and to my dismay the entire bar started rooting against the Steelers.

so, instead of sitting there polity like a gentleman with my chicken I started dancing around and shouting out "Steelers defense" once Troy Polamalu made a few more dizzying athletic tackles that ensured the game. they made me do it

^ here here! ac asked me if i would enjoy watching steelers games at a bar in say, los anageles. i said yes, because that city's local population has no real rooting interest in steelers football. really the only two places i can't watch steelers games at bars at are cleveland (where i live), and cincinnati. i said columbus is a pretty mixed crowd, so it really wouldn't be a problem.

i then thought about baltimore (the other team in the afc noth) and i really don't think they would care. much how when watcing a ravens game in pittsburgh, they don't really care a lot. there's mutual respect between those teams and fans. whereas there is no respect between cle-pitt, cin-pitt, and cle-cin. losing is a bitch and creates playa-hataz.

Nothing beats watching sport live. Whether it is sitting in the sun for 8 hours drinking beer watching Test match cricket or perched high in the stands at a rugby match. Live events usually involve the journey there, the bars packed with excited fans walking distance to the ground, the harmless banter between supporters as you walk in. Once inside I love the buzz, the cheering, the singing (especially at an English soccer match) or the goosebumps you get as they perform the haka.

Even motor sport is interesting live. You appreciate the speed and the smell of burning fuel and rubber when you are sitting track side or on the bend at the speedway. I can't watch it on television, for me it is like watching the traffic through my window.

I don't care much for commentary. Most sports I know inside out and can follow the game without inane chat from has beens who often are only talking for the sake of the sound. Give me the roar of the crowd over the bias comments of a fool.

If I can't be there I'd rather watch it at home. My television is as big as any you would find at a pub, I always get a comfy seat on a sofa or arm chair, I can fit a dozen of my mates, many of whom would support different teams, the beer is served in a glass, there are fresh towels in the bathroom and no one throws me out if I spark up a joint or decide to strip naked and run a victory lap around the block.

If it is a game I really want to see, I like watching it in private with a no more than 3-4 friends. Whenever I goto a bar or a large gathering I kind of get distracted and can't really pay much attention to the game.

Watching solo really isn't too bad either because unless it's my favorite team i'm watching I like to just mute the TV and play music....can't stand sports color analysts.

Obviously going to games is the best, although the least convenient option.

If I am watching a team I support or where the game is of more value than pure entertainment then I must be at home and any friends over are strictly screened as I cannot stand being with people who want to socialise during a game or ask stupid questions.

If its a case of just entertainment then I am happy to be at the game itself and I will spend the time socialising, the game is secondary.
