Where did all the real mephedrone go?

"The original legal high mephedrone is reported to be different to the mephedrone that came after the ban, in both positive and negative effects. Could it have been a different drug altogether?"

Read article at:
There's been quite a lot of discussion about mephedrone on Bluelight over the years, so the article is definitely worth a read if you're interested in 4-mmc. It also highlights a few principles that apply to other street drugs, one of which I'd never even heard of before (and I consider myself fairly well versed in drug science).

Interesting article that seems to parallel some discussions we’ve had on here regarding MDMA as well.

"Dr. Zee" seems to be somewhat of a charlatan so I would be wary of the statements he makes.

Why do you think he's a charlatan? I don't know much about him, but he seems to know his stuff when it comes to drugs, especially legal highs.

Here's an example of him claiming to have invented a compound that has been studied for its CNS effects since at least 1956.
Okay thanks. He definitely was synthesizing mephedrone back in the day though, although some sources list Kinetic as the person who discovered mephedrone back in 2004 (after posting a tutorial on the hive forum). The only statement of Dr. Zee I really questioned in that article was the bit about the rice shards being 4-MEC. Like the writer, I also thought the rice shards were still mephedrone, just a different synth method.

With that said, I literally haven't seen any real mephedrone in the past few years that came as rice shards, so Dr. Zee may well be right. Until I see evidence to suggest otherwise I won't call bullshit.

^^^This not correct. Pure substances can exist in multiple crystalline formations, known as polymorphs, aka polymorphism.

Polymorphs can occur for a number of reasons (solvent used to recrystallize, leftover water, etc) and recent research shows us that different polymorphs can have better or worse solubility, drug efficacy, toxicity, and lots more.

Polymorphism is probably one reason pure drugs can vary.

Yes, I've read about polymorphism before. It was mentioned in the article I just posted. I'm not quite sure what you're saying is incorrect, as I was talking about the physical appearance of the Indian synthed mephedrone aka the rice shards.

Ya after re reading my response I’m not really sure what I thought read before.. My apologies.

No worries. It's interesting that you say this article seems to parallel some discussions you’ve had on here regarding MDMA as well. I think part of the reason why these type of discussions never seem to end is because there are so many variables (polymorphism, purity, isomers, tolerance etc) and they all probably play a role in explaining the perceived differences in effect.
