What's with the racism?

racism is the guy on the bus who told me to go back to my own country,
racism is me spitting in his face and punching him in the face.
racism is here to stay, there is nothing you can do about it, there are always gunna be dickheads like the guy on the bus, weather its racism or any other "ism" there are always wankers who get a kick out of intimidation.

generalisations, statistics, etc certainly are a problem... but what can we do about them? they're an unavoidable part of human nature. after september 11, can anyone else imagine many americans developing blindly racist views against anyone from afghanistan? it's a generalisation, and it's unavoidable

EXACTLY!!
As I pointed out in the other thread racism is an unavoidable aspect of human nature.
I am racist towards Aborigines. I admit it, I admit it's not fair or logical to have a generalised view of a race but that's the way it is because of my experiences.
O.K. In a psychological experiment a kid was presented with extremely disturbing images of clowns (e.g. with claws or beating shit up). Whenever that kid saw clowns he screamed in terror. The kid had completely negative opinions of all clows.
I have seen Aboriginals beat people up, lie drunk in the gutter, abuse people for no reason, mug people, be dirty and sniff petrol. Everytime I have met an Aborignal I have had a negative experience. Whether this is because of my prejudice or not is irrelevant. When I see an Aboriginal I get scared. I therefore have a negative opinion of all Aboriginals.
I make no apologies and think that I would either be unbelievably tolerant (which I am not) or not human to have any other opinion.

And that's one reason I'm ashamed to be a member of the human race... Because it is something which is accepted as part of human nature and so many people don't even bother to question/fight/try to change it...

I hate it when people say that. If you are that ashamed, there is a permanent cure... :P

Jakoz: That'd be the easy way out, and it would also show that I'm no more evolved than the rest of humanity... I think i'd rather keep doing the little that I can to change things in the hope that one day I can be proud to be human...

so, any chance of enforcing the bluelight user agreement?
post or upload any content that victimizes, harasses, degrades, or intimidates an individual or group of individuals on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or any other reason;
i've tried really hard to stay out of the racism threads (this one and the one about the agression), because i see no point in debating these things in this forum.
anychance of enforcing the above, locking the threads and letting the whole thing die so we can get back to being the sweet little PLUR society we used to be?
if so, i'll envite you all around to my house, and my mum will make milk and cookies for all! ;)

nah..no point global..it's not worth the hassle..just surf for porn or something instead.
when you coming home..we have news to tell !

my girlfriends family are the worst racists ive ever met. they hate me because i am not of their nationality... everyone is always so quick to call racism a great australian tradition... this is a nasty racist comment slandering all australians.
i am 7th generation victorian.
i have a shire named in my families honour.
yet i am not "appropriate" husband material for my partner due to my race. they hide behind statements like "it would just be easier for us if he spoke *****" and "he cannot fit into our community etc."
i was never a racist before... but sometimes others actions make it hard to remain rational and logical about these things.
so you can see, just because i am white anglo aussie doesnt mean i cannot be the victim of racism in this country. sad isnt it?

Global: We could delete some posts if we wanted to, but we can't lock the entire thread because there's nothing against discussing racism...
eddi: Very sad :(

There's nothing wrong with discussing racism Global. How can you possibly attempt a 'plur' society if you don't discuss things like this to understand other people's opinions, ideas and thoughts on the world?
This is the perfect forum to be able to express your opinions without being interuppted, beat up, or vilified for your views.

Considering I sort of started all this off I suppose I should answer this thread.
I put the original thread up because I was sore about being having my nose broken for no good reason. The fact that some of my attackers had dark skin makes no difference. The point is they broke my nose.
It annoys me that people make generalisations about race, not because there isnt any truth to the generalisations, because for all I know there could be. What annoys me about these steriotypes is the they incriminate those who arent involved, and perpetuate the circle of violence by making young people of that particular race/religion/gerneral description belive that the magority of people really are out to get them. As a result some of these people grow up with very bad and possibly dangerous attitudes towards the wider community.

hey y'all...
i retract my request to close the threads in question.

i agree entirely that there is nothing wrong with discussing racism - as seems more prevalent in this thread. in the other thread however, it was more a case of racist slander versus discussions about racism. i guess i feel that these forums seem not to work so well in discussions of emotive issues - there tends to be a great deal of spouting off and not so much listening.
this thread has however shown some people adapting views and opinions a little however - so discuss on!
btw - you're all still welcome to come to my mum's house for milk and cookies (she doesn't know, but her cocoa has been tampered with). ;)
