Sitting at home thinking up ideas about visuals at a possible upcoming warehouse party that we might be holding, I was wondering what other people like to see their well earned ticket money spent on visually, ie decor, lighting, lasers, proejctions, etc....
Like do you guys drool over big hairy laser setups with multi heads and full colour...do you like the 'fluffy fluro' kind of decor like at mud parties, or are you more for the serious 'hardware' style decor. Do you people even notice the efforts of decor artists and lighting/laser technicians? I know some people don't, I can't comprehend how but i figure they just don't care....
well what do you guys think....
if you spent 20 bux on a party what would you expect to see. compared to say, a 10 buck party and a 50 buck party...

Two things get my brain wired at a rave. Big motherfucker lazers with about a billion colours. I also love the VJ visuals, it really fucks with your mind when your stompin away and you can see manga or something on a big screen. But if I had to choose only one it would be the Big mothfucker lazers.

What about say a big 10 watt full colour twin head (like at shucmacher) and rather than having normal walls or black plastic surrounding the dancefloor, having walls of 'vj' projections all around....kinda like intelligent decor...
what about decor wise? do you go for that cheesy fluro crap or do you like ur serious artwork?

the best visuals for me are lasers, and after going to Mystic 5 up in Sydney last weekend were the lasers!
20 of the m.f.'s.
they would have spun you out even if u were straight!!
but in terms of what to expect at a party, there is nothing better than a "theme" .. if u can pull off a great theme, u have done well seretone

Just to add a bit more. I'm not big on the fluro thing (Although I wear a shit load of it). I almost prefer the venue to be very dark (With black lights) so all you can see are the people (If wearing UV friendly clothing), the DJ, The screens and the lazers. Everything else is just walls and stuff. It also gives the impression of being in a biger place than you are.
As for themes you would need to go way out there and try to get the party people to dress to that theme. I dunno something like 20's theme with guys dressed in fluro gangster suits and the lasses with those skirts with the tassle thingy's coming off them.

nah, fuck dat bright shit!

If you going to decorate a warehouse, why not use a theme that's in line with the venue - ie dark mysterious, run dow, post-apoloyptic...heaps of graffiti etc...what about a neo-tokyo ala akira look?
do you remember the prodigy video clip for 'start the dance' in that warehouse? it had manniquins and clothes racks and plastered clothe....hhmmm...now there's an idea....

Yes fully...something thats outside the square. I feel the whole 'lets cut out a foam shaped spaceship thing and paint it fluro' is something of a cliche these days, everyone goes for the fluro colours the minute the word 'decor' is dropped. fuck that

My ideal warehouse party -> Raw and dark. Big fuck off laser, a handful of nice bright scans like technobeams, not too many otherwise it will look like a gatecrasher party, just 4 or 8, depending onthe size of the place. A big strobe, and nice projections. Plus funky artwork/sculptures intelligently and symmetrically placed around the joint. I also like the idea of not having a square room, ie having a triangle shaped dancefloor, with the dj in one of theh corners of the triangle, and projections on the walls either side.....
Must be kept interesting.... = )

Especially dressed in fluffy clothes! Fluffy clothes rock, the people make 1/2 the venue.. So make sure you get cool people to go...

Hey PseudoSym, your becoming quite the regular, awesome!!

Back to the Q - one thing that M5 lacked was a decent chill out area. Me and da boyz were going crackers because the lasers were getting too intense...mmmm...acid....and out side was way too cold. Need a nice cushy area that is not in your face to chill out in and regain the small amount of control you have.
Hope that helps..oh yeah and dont forget emphasising the VIBE...for me thats 90% of the party.
Cheers

PS - wheres the party gonna be?

You can kick the monkey all you want...but what do you do when he wakes up?

Theres nothing like a bunch of hugeass lazers and a roboscan and the like. Best lighting setup i've seen was at Utopia in May.. looked sensational.
I'm also a big fan of projections and visuals.. manga is cool, but there are some wicked designs out there..

I love those deocr and visuals by the MUD parties!! outstanding and very underground!! It is such a pity that they lost money and is GONE!!

I like the Richie Hawtin style. Tape up ALL the windows, no light at all, cept for the turntable lights, with the SOLE focus on the pounding music. One PHAT sound system and you've got an awesome party :-p
but for me? Probably similar to above. A wicked lazer, MAYBE some intellegent decor, but not those dodgy projections from computers running atari's. Some of the graphics ive seen just dont cut it. forget that fluffy styrofoam stuff, I think, as you said serotone, its too cliche these days.
Anyway, good luck to ya!

Best visual thing for me is allways a trippy winamp-like projection... the line-thing that shows the intensity of each frequency (dunno what the fuck its called) lets u 'see'the music... never EVER fails to entertain me

"reach for the lasers, safe as fuck."
sorry to quote Human Traffic *yet again* but yeah, i just love lasers waaay too much. I've had some fantastic talking-to-the-beams experiences at Salt (Tiesto), QBH (PVD) and also Sunny

the lasers are what makes me go moist (apart from the music of course).
Big lasers make me very very happy.

I actually know a guy (ex flatmate and a bluelighter) who's a bit of a whizz at this shit - dude redesigned the whole of Commercial lounge on 3 animation and does projections and shit ... interested serotone??? Can get you in touch with the guy who does the decor for some Agent Mad parties too...email me if you're interested...

Serotone: you getting that laser you were telling me about.
BTW loved the setup at NRG4. Awesome 2 x 4 colour lasers and the video projection screens playing cartoons and stuff. Not too much not too little. Not so sure of the mushrooms in the other room though.

Let me just vent something which really gets to me... I'll use these two as examples, but many are culprits...
Rush Hour. It was $55 or so. The queue took 1 hour and 30 minutes to get us in... I've heard reports of 2 hours from friends. LONG Queues for the toilets. Two moderate doors at 1/3 and 2/3 across the back of the two warehouses made for some ugly traffic. We got in to the line at 12pm... By 12.20, I had waited to get in, then waited to hang the piss I was desperate for after the line... If I didn't have my drugs, I think I would have gone home. That was a SICKENING wait. It left myself and many others rather fucking irate.. I will never attend a "Rush Hour" again.
Hyperspeed... $25. The door to the two male toilets was situated conveniently at the bottom of the slim stairway to the second arena... Needless to say, the toilets were a rather fucked up scene for most of the night due to the fact there were TWO of them and they were right there! *Points* Right in the road to the stairs!... The chill out room was so packed all we needed to do was turn the lights off, and it'd be just like upstairs with no lasers and slightly softer music.
Get the venue right. Toilets near main passage ways need to be big, because if you get a queue building, no one will be happy.
A few small lasers will have me satisfied - if there is room and clog free access. But, the less laser power and heads you have, there are the darker the arena should be - to increase the effect (that's what I think).
The organisers behind Mystic 5 - I love you. They didn't sell the 4000 tickets they could have, they kept it to 2500. The toilets were right next to an entrance to the sitting area and entrance/exit from an arena... But they were big enough to avoid queues for them. They had the biggest and best laser show I've ever seen, stadium seating (it was a basketball arena) overlooking the main arena and I'm rambling now so I'll stop...
What I'm getting at...
ROOM TO MOVE FROM ARENA/S TO TOILETS AND SEATING WITHOUT WAITING. And vice versa.
I'm rather worked up now. A big fuck you to the people responsible for Rush Hour. Bring on Mystic!

Again, i'm gonna talk about Mystic 5.
The 20 lasers were absolutely amazing. 8 up front, 5 down each wall and 2 from the back. It was just great to be able to look everywhere and have lasers comming at you, it filled the entire room with beams of light and grahpics. Lasers from the back add soo much, its well worth it.
Also DJ Cam is kewl to project up onto a screen or two. So those who love to watch can do so without having to be cramped right up front with all the other sweaty people.
All the above spreads the crowd out a bit and is great in my books.
