What to do with used syringes?

I think it's a shame that VA doesn't have a needle exchange program.

People are going to use drugs reguardless if it's legal or not - but at least they deserve a place were they can recieve clean rigs, because sharing needles or re-using old ones can spread diease and the State should be avoiding this problem and trying to it's residents healthy!

It is a shame. The state of Virginia is condemning itself to disease and addiction. People here are very ignorant.

This thread seems to be assuming household trash is safe to dig through with the exception of used syringes, and thats simply not true. Used chemical containers to biohazard waste like tampons and used condoms and all kinds of things are disposed of in household trash. Placing the cap back on syringes and disposing of them inside a sealed bottle or metal container is about as good as its going to get in most areas.
I'd think carefully about advertising the prescence of syringes depending on your area unless anonymously disposing of them.

I'd be careful nosing around hospitals with containers full of used syringes asking about safe disposal in some areas, remember in some states possession of a syringe is still a felony despite the fact they are openly sold.
Harm reduction is also protecting yourself from prosecution, find out your local laws because all it takes is some vindictive asshole to call police.

Make sure to look into if your state has any laws regarding this.

Mine doesn't. Break off needle, put in syringe, snap on cap, put in plastic bottle, throw in dumpster.

Just break the metal tip off, place it into the barrel and throw it in the trash.. or save them up and throw it in the garbage at a gas station of mickey d's when you go there.

Cap the rigs, wrap them in a layer of newspaper or brown grocery bag, and place in a glass or thick plastic bottle with a cap. Toss in trash.
Or if you can bring them into a hospital or school (where they have sharps disposal units mounted on the walls in most bathrooms) use the disposal units.

Many airports still have sharps containers in the bathrooms. I think I've even seen them in restaurants bathrooms. If you can't get your used rigs to a hospital, needle exchange, etc spend the extra couple of bucks and buy a sharps container. If you have to throw it away in the "regular" garbage then at least you have given as much warning and protection as you can to those who may come in contact with the container.

Some people advocate for breaking off the needles. Others go one step further and damage the barrel of the syringe so it too can not be reused. Those steps are up to you. If you are very conscious about accidental needle sticks you may want to wash out your rigs with a bleach solution before putting them in the sharps container. That step will kill most nasties which might be in there.

There is a phone number for locating a safe disposal. I have to look for it. When I do, I'll post it.

This is more suited for drug culture.

I get a old paper towel roll, fold it and keep them in there. Afterwards I duct tape it up really, really well and dispose of them in a dumpster.

I have nothing insightful to add to this conversation. I will be quiet and keep my smart comments to myself.

If a needle exchange is not available. Do the following.

Find an empty and rinsed out one liter plastic Coke or Pepsi bottle and place used needles into the bottle. Make sure that the used needles are bent and covered. Reseal the bottle tightly everytime you add a new needle to the bottle.

When you are ready to throw your home sharps container away label the bottle "Used needles, caution." Or something similar. Then make sure the lid is on TIGHTLY and place a layer of tape around the top so there is no question that those needles are staying in the bottle. Labeling the used needles as such is important for people who be dumpster diving in your dumpster or trash for recycling and in some cases labeling the container where you throw your sharps is required by local or state law. Not labeling the bottle could really ruin someone's day.

You shouldn't worry about throwing them away at your home, but if you are make sure to toss them in a dumpster away from places where children might congregate. Best bet is to put them in your kitchen garbage the night before trash collection. Then that morning before your trash guy comes just go out and add your kitchen trash to the trash bin or dumpster.

Easy as pie.

yeaahh, i learned this one first hand.

a whiiillle back when the pigs were going through my trash a little too much for comfort i "accidently" left the capz off and through out 32 used needles evenly dispersed through out the garbage. Also, i "unknowingly" left them facing up.

So i went outside and looked sketchy by my garbage(by accident, duh).. Two or three hours later (2am) one or two of my suspected garbage elves showed up and you know the rest!

Oddly enough, that's the night they forgot to put the trash back in the can & left without cleaning up. Those Jerks!

my doctor told me to just bring my used needles back to the pharmacy and they can dispose of them there. I keep em all in a little bag for now and when it gets full I'll do that. pretty easy
