What should I do? Anti-depressants just don't work for me.

i dont think you can expect a manufactured solution (anti-depressants) to solve an organic problem (depression). its not a lock and key scenario. i think the solution is longitudinal and probably not something like paxil or happylexa

That's like saying antibiotics shouldn't be used to cure pneumonia because it's a manufactured solution to an organic problem. Sometimes depression isn't due to your life and situation and is simply just comes. It's why you see people with perfectly normal, non-problematic lives still suffering from depression. I used to think that depressed people just needed to learn to enjoy life and be happy like the rest of us, then I found out first hand depression isn't something you can control when I got it myself. Depression isn't something you can understand until you get it, and I'd be willing to bet every valued posession I own that you wouldn't be saying the same thing if you lived through severe depression.

Depression isn't an emotion, when people say "i'm depressed because i got fired from my job", it's an incorrect use of the term. I'd describe exactly what depression feels like, but it's a mouthful and I'm too tired to type that much at the moment.

I don't think antibiotics should be used for pneumonia or so-called antidepressants for depression unless there are no other options and the benefits vastly outweigh the risks, and I have had both. We need to get away from the idea that pharmaceuticals are the answer. People in the US use the most pharmaceuticals and have the worst health (physical and mental). Depression is also not comparible to pneumonia anyway, it's a lot more complex and is a chronic issue. People really need to start viewing mental health issues holistically and work on curing/improving them instead of just trying to mask them with drugs (which usually only works temporarily or not at all, and/or has terrible side effects). You can't just will depression away of course, and victim-blaming is wrong and useless, but it is disempowering to believe we can do nothing about it except take pills.

While I do believe antidepressants are overprescribed and aren't proven to be useful for most of what they're prescribed for, you'll notice the only condition SSRIs and other ADs have a very nice proven efficacy for is SEVERE depression, while the efficacy is significantly lower for treating mild-moderate depression, anxiety, and the myriad of other crap they're prescribed for. Look it up, many sources say SSRIs have a piss poor response rate only marginally better than placebo with the sole exception of SEVERE major depressive disorder.

But they are overprescibed. I agree with you on that. Antipsychotics are too, they should only be used in people with psychosis/schizophrenia and bipolars who go psychotic during mania. I see reports of so many people prescribed those who clearly don't need them.

ive suffered from depression, and it comes and goes. no two cases are the same. i see it as an area on a continuum, and not a "have or dont have." this is why i dont think ssris are a solution. maybe for some, they are. but i dont have the mindset to just take a pill and expect my brain to do the rest of the work. quite the opposite, really

There ya go. SSRIs (and MAOIs) aren't the solution for everybody, but it's wrong to say you shouldn't try them if you're depressed just because they aren't the solution for everybody. Some people may not want to take MAOIs because they're afraid of the side effects, and that's fine. But it's good to let people know the option is there and that there are more things to try besides SSRIs.

^Yeah kratom tolerance does develope just as fast, but doesnt have hold of you like a traditional opiate, its a pretty unique herb. Its very easy to taper down, especially with stem and vein powder (not sure how it works chemicaly). "Less is more" is also a very common theme with kratom, meaning after your tolerance has developed taking ~60-70% of your dose can produce the same effects. Im still trying to figure this herb out after 2 years. At first most kratom feels the same, but after a while the different strains make huge differences which is also pretty interesting. I'd say pure leaf is most benifical and the general veiw on extracts is bad, they're pretty addictive and raise tolerance a lot faster.
