Over the years I've been addicted to several substances, including MDMA, cocaine, crack, PCP, benzos, and heroin.
When I was was a teenager (mid-late 90's) I abused the shit out of ecstasy. Like 20-30 pills a week, and they were GOOD. But as we all know, MDMA stops working if you use it too much. And so by the time I was 21 I was a full blown coke head. I also had a sizeable PCP habit that has stuck with me to this day. I eventually started cooking my coke up and smoking it, and then progressed to shooting. Thats when things got out of control. IV coke was my most damaging addiction. $100,000 and several infections and seizures later, I'm very lucky to be alive.
After I stopped doing coke, I started drinking ALOT, but when my body couldn't handle the amount of alcohol I was drinking I started taking alot of benzos. ALOT of Xanax, Valium, and Klonopin. If I told you how much you wouldn't believe me. I finally tapered off for good last summer after 2 years of failed attempts and a few seizures and hospital stays.
Through out this time I had always used opiates on and off, mostly oxy and heroin. I never really considered myself a heroin addict, but there have been short periods (2-6 months) when unlimited access led to some pretty nasty withdrawals when supply ran out. Thankfully I neverr experienced PAWS from opiates like I have from benzos.
I've pretty much grown out of all that shit. My body just can't handle it anymore and I sort of enjoy life nowadays, so I'd like to keep myself around for a few more decades. Don't get me wrong, I take drugs recreationally, but I employ harm reduction and moderation to the fullest. I still take some benzos here and there for anxiety, and I do dope maybe once a month. I drink on the weekends, and do molly and ketamine when I go to a club, rave or festival. And maybe a little PCP on special occasions. But my drug of choice nowadays is marijuana. I've even cut my 1 1/2 pack a day cigarette habit down to a few cigs on the weekend when I'm out drinking.
I also consider myself addicted to music, spirituality, learning, and spicy foods (I mean REALLY fuckin spicy).
