and is it all considered electro? i know how to stop dubstep, that ones seems easy. the others seem to sound familiar, or maybe i am wrong

what genre is it when they remix hip hop/popular songs with electro, like the stuff you hear in clubs

Its all electronic music. House is a generic term coming from the Chicago Warehouse music when disco sped up and became much more dancy. Techno is more european with much faster beats. Trance has soaring highs and is really tailored for pills. All good family fun

house has more thump and focuses on high hats more than techno. it uses more organic sounds than the other genres.
House

techno has about the same thump as house but less influenced by high hats. sounds more "industrial"
Techno

trance is more focused on melodic sounds but has less thump than techno or house.
Trance

electro isn't like the other genres as it doesn't have a 4/4 drum beat. it has breaks instead.

you go to crappy clubs ;)

where you from?

In Los Angeles most of the clubs here play hiphop/ top 40. The amount of clubs that play house and trance are about the same here. Techno clubs are hard to come by here.

arizona. the clubs i go to usually play hip hop, and are remixed electronically with a dj..idk what kinda music that is called. they play mainly hip hop but i don't think it's ever the studio/regular song

It would do well for the Mods here to make a thread describing each genre of electronic music for relative noobs...

A great place to learn different subgenres is beatport.com
Just scroll through the many different ones, they have most.
And they have many different ckub styles, if you look. But ya, hiphop is the most, everywhere,
pretty depressing

House music is kinda jazzy and upbeat

Techno has a constant thumping beat, usually at 140bpm

Trance is most interesting because it generally builds up and has a climax.

This Guide gets posted a lot on the internet in response to questions about electronic music genres. The only problem is that the guide is a little bit outdated now. For example, it doesn't include electro-house or dubstep. It should still be useful to you. I got a lot of value out of it a few years ago.

Another good way to learn about the genre's is on the wikipedia pages for them. Genre's can be defined by certain characteristics. For example,

House music: "The common element of house is a prominent kick drum on every beat (nicknamed "four to the floor"). Producers commonly de-emphasize lower mid-range frequencies (where the fundamental frequencies of the human voice and other instruments lie) in favor of bass and hi-hats. Electronically-generated sounds and samples of recordings from genres such as jazz, blues, disco, funk, soul and synth pop are often added to the foundation of the drum beat and synth bass line.Techno and trance, which developed alongside house, share this basic beat infrastructure, but they usually eschew house's live-music-influenced feel and Black or Latin music influences in favor of more synthetic sound-sources and approach."

Techno: "In general, techno is very DJ-friendly, being mainly instrumental (commercial varieties being an exception) and is produced with the intention of its being heard in the context of a continuous DJ set, wherein the DJ progresses from one record to the next via a synchronized segue or "mix." Much of the instrumentation in techno emphasizes the role of rhythm over other musical parameters"

Trance: "characterized by a a musical form that builds up and breaks down throughout a track. It is more melodic than techno, and the harder styles usually have harder beats than house."

Agreed.

Google search brings you to this:

Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music. Dubstep isn't included because dubstep sucks.

That guide is really comprehensive, but it really needs to be updated IMO.

I mean, we are already in the 2010s. :D

Regarding setting up an quick FAQ, I guess I could do it and add it to the EMD directory or the other mixes/productions sticky. We'll see.
