Don't take over 400mgs a day or seizures can happen and don't take it while on an ssri. Start off with a 100mgs or so... It will get you high if you don't use opiates... Tramadol didn't do anything for me but help my withdrawals and then seize later on (was past 800mgs a day and on an ssri, was in the idgaf stage of life). Anyways its an opioid not an opiate. It does make others feel a little speedy and some not at all. It does make you feel opiated too if you have a low tolerance to opiates or none at all. I would just stay away from it though because tramadol sucks hardcore imo. Its a drug that works for a little but then stops and you just take more and more to feel normal... Also you don't want to develop a tolerance to this because you can easily exceed 400mgs of this stuff in no time. I started off with 150mgs and didn't feel anything but oddly a little chest pain, it was easy to finally take more and more after that which is a no, no.

Don't do it, that's bad at the time I was on celexa (now zoloft but they're family members) but it can cause serotonin syndrome which is life threatening. So do not take if you're on an ssri... Its dangerous.

ssris and tramadol effect the serotonin in your brain.....tramadol acts like an ssri and acts on your serotonin receptor so to mix both at the same time can be very bad... leading to even more chance of a seizure or again serotonin syndrome...

Read about serotonin syndrome here: bipolar.about.com/od/antidepressants/a/serotoninsyndrm.htm

Seizures have been reported in patients with predisposing factors receiving tramadol monotherapy at recommended doses as well as higher doses. The combined use of tramadol and either TCAs, SSRIs or neuroleptics may increase seizure risk in patients utilizing any of these drug combinations, as SSRIs inhibit tramadol metabolism, and TCAs, SSRIs, and neuroleptics reduce the tramadol seizure threshold. A warning has been included in the tramadol package insert describing this interaction. Additionally, concomitant administration of an SSRI with tramadol may result in serotonin syndrome due to additive blockage of serotonin reuptake. Several case reports have described the development of serotonin syndrome following the addition of tramadol to a stable SSRI treatment regimen. Symptoms of serotonin syndrome include irritability, altered consciousness, hyperthermia, increased muscle tone, rigidity, and coma. Serotonin syndrome may also lead to death. Concurrent administration of tramadol with either TCAs, SSRIs, or neuroleptics should be considered cautiously, if at all. Patients should be closely monitored for seizure activity as well as signs of serotonin syndrome. (Copy and pasted)

And no not all drugs cause serotonin syndrome when on ssris but stay away from mdma (anything used to roll basically mda ect), dxm.... research is a must.

OP are you taking this recreationalaly (I'm sure I've spelt that wrong!) or for pain, if for pain is it going to be long term?

are you saying amphetamines can cause serotonin syndrome or seizures if your on antidepressant??

Tramadol has opioid activity, so it's an opioid painkiller like codeine or morphine. However, it's not a hugely strong opioid and this activity appears to come from one of it's metabolites, o-desmethyltramadol.

Tramadol is also an SNRI (serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor) - the same class as venlafaxine, and similar to SSRIs. However, it isn't used in this way as it's opioid properties make tolerance and addiction a big problem. The SNRI activity can be quite stimulating as it increases serotonin and nor epinephrine levels in the brain.

As mentioned, don't take it with SSRIs or SNRIs as you risk serotonin syndrome. This is essentially a condition where there is excess serotonin in the brain. It can be seen of as a more extreme version of serotonin side-effects you get from taking a pill (or taking a SSRI/SNRI sometimes) - high body tempterature, pupil dilation, muscle tension etc - only with serotonin syndrome you also have unstable blood pressure, even higher body temperature, fast heart rate, agitation and mycoclonus (twitching muscles). It's a medical emergency; people who think they had it for a bit then it went away likely just had severe serotonin side effects; actual serotonin syndrome needs medical treatment. There is a good article about it here.

As for tramadol causing seizures - 400mg is the accepted safe amount, but people have seized off less, and some people get away with more. Just because you have got away with more once doesn't mean it is always safe for you to take over 400mg. Taking drugs that lower the seizure threshold Imake seizures more likely) are a bad idea with tramadol - link - where as benzos and gabapentin can ben protective (but don't rely on this, you don't know what dose you'd need and it doesn't always work anyway)

There is some more info in the Tranadol section of the Other Drugs directory, found here :)

edit: people's recreational response to tramadol varies hugely -some people get a lot from it, some hardly nothing, some find it speedy, some find it feels like any other opioid... etc

In fact - we have had a *lot* of threads like this in the past - just search for "tramadol" in the title in the advanced search option of the search engine, or click on the "Tramadol" header in the OD directory.

Closed, pm me if you have any queries.
