What are your cold remedy's?

Chicken soup, Zicam, multivitamin/minerals, lots of juice, water, sleep, and hot showers. Oh yeah and fresh air. I think most people overlook the healing effects of fresh air, but of course you need to keep yourself totally warm if its cold outside.

Zinc, Cold-Eze (cough drops that contain zinc), green tea, lots of rest, chicken soup, lots of water/juice with vitamin C in it, and some exercise.

Romie1092-I think you mean whiskey or bourbon? That's the basic recipe for a Hot Toddy except in a hot toddy you add cinnamon instead of ginger.

The reason this usually happens at this time of the year (aside from weather itself and your body's natural reaction) is because the diet that carries on by tradition (heavier, fattier, sweeter food, in larger quantities if you banquet), is no longer accompanied by the hard work (manual labor to keep things in order) or bodily work (energy used in keeping warm before ubiquitous heaters) that used to require the excess food energy. Also, the food is more abundant now due to commercialism and food chain commodification, so we are eating more of it.

So... do try to eat lighter (or follow that pumpkin pie with spice tea to put "heat" in your diet). Don't stuff yourself full and try nursing a water canteen of hot water all day.

Try to exercise.

Really strong brewed ginger tea. I boil half of a huge ginger root (chopped into pieces) . No sugar or anything at all....it burns so good :D I also eat a lot of raw garlic with my food.

Ginger +1. Ginger and turmeric are fantastic for this!

I have a cold and sore throat right now so that's why I searched and bumped up this old thread instead of making a new one here in HL since I figured the topic had already been covered. I saw that I replied to this thread before but I forgot I had.

I'm pretty sure I got sick from a weekend of drinking, staying out late, and hanging out in bars kissing drunk strangers that came onto me.

I've been drinking green tea, lemonade and white tea, black tea with ginger, lots of water, and cough drops help a lot too.

I generally don't like to eat when I'm sick but I did force myself to eat some chicken soup and I get lots of rest.

Taking a shower with lots of steam helps too. I also spray saline up my nose.

I've also been taking a multi-vitamin that has a lot of Zinc and Vitamin C and other vitamins/minerals in it besides taking daily fish oil, vitamin E, and Vitamin D.

Taking psuedoephedrine helps especially since I can't take DXM.

I got some Alkaseltzer and that helps but it's mainly asprin and an antihistamine with a decongestant.

If I feel like I might be getting sick, one of the first things I do is sit in a steam room for as long as I can stand, taking deep breaths through the nose and directly into the lungs. The idea is to sweat out some of the toxins in your body so your immune system will have an easier time fighting the infection. Also the hot steam will directly kill a lot bacteria in the nose while helping to prevent the infection from spreading into the lungs. Spas are also really good too but are not as effective as the steam room for killing bacteria in the sinuses. The advantage of the spa is that you can sweat out more toxins because you are able to withstand the heat for longer periods of time. Never use a sauna when you feel like you are getting sick because they can dry out your lungs, setting you up for an infection of the lungs. Of course always drink lots of fluids, take lots of antioxidants and get plenty of sleep. If you start doing the right things as soon as you feel any kind of symptoms, you may reduce the length of the sickness substantially and also experience less severe symptoms. Spas and steam rooms have the ability to raise the body temperature, inducing an artificial fever which is what the body will do anyways if the infection gets severe enough. So why not give yourself a head start.

I use a spoonful of honey and the juice of half a lemon and add boiling water for when we have sore throats.

root ginger cut up in small pieces boiled with a few leaves of lady's mantle strained and drunk when warm helps.

Tumeric you can bring to the boil with hot milk and drink, although I do not recommend this one if there is a lot of mucus.

however I find making sure I have my daily vitamin c and use garlic in cooking helps us not get many colds at all.

pseudoephedrine really works well for me. stay away from those cold/flu syrups.

breaking your fever with meds, or hot showers/baths-what have you; will prolong the virus's life by slowing your immune system.
avoiding tylenol etc., and taking 'luke-warm' baths just above your body temperature will relieve some symptoms, but keep your defenses up.

i discovered the Neti-Pot this season, and no colds lasted longer then 1 day!. i thought it was all bullshit, but it fucking works wonders.

sinucleanse.com i think

^ YEAAAAAAAAAAH MAAAAN.

I need to get me one of those - might as well wait til I can get one in India though, spring is pretty much here.

For colds - ginger thinly sliced in every hot/warm drink, chewed ginger when I walk in the cold/just came in from it(this works really well in drying that mucus out), honey, Yogi Teas have a good one for cold weather called "Cold Season".

Apples, blackcurrants, oranges, anything with plenty of Vit C is good, plus carrots and a bit of natural yoghurt are also good for you immune system.

Garlic is a good booster as someone mentioned - Make a super smoothie :) with some echinacea added.

Also avoid drinks that are lower than room temperature at all costs, Drew.

and I would suggest you steam bath your head - with a bowl of hot water infused with rosemary, sage sage and more sage, eucalyptus, etc (research it a bit), towel over the head and just sit above it and breathe it in through the nose.

hehe, is a towel the over the head the only option of a 'mask' , to take in such pure vapors??

~;-)

this is a secret others have died for yall.

Lol. I don't know - my mum always used a towel, so I always use a towel when I remember to do such things when all blocked up and feeling like flu-ey crap.

heheh

this is what i was refereeing to; the 4-Thieves Plague-Mask...
for better homes through gardening :D

you tidy the herbs up in the 'beak'.

Usually smoke a bowl, drink plenty of tea, dont eat too much, and curl up with a good book under plenty of warm blankets.

...Although this is what I do almost everyday but it feels especially good when you are under the weather. :)
