I wanted to be led in the right direction on the subject of brain health. Any information on how to keep serotonin and nophenperin levels where they should be... Or how they fuction. And just brain health reccomendations of any kind.

^ I dunno about fish oils man.

I've been taking them for 2 years now .
I still feel as depressed and unmotivated as I've always been .

One benefit of fish oils is that they make my skin look soo radiant and chicks love it . They're always asking for my secret ;-)

No brain benefits though.

3-5mgs of melatonin before you go to sleep every night. Its supposed to reduced any brain damage done during the day while you sleep. I've been taking it for about 5 years and I honestly believe it works very well, because at times it would appear is if I was trying to damage my brain with multiple substances.

They may not be a stinky panacea, however their benefits in regard to memory retention and prevention of dementia in aging peoples is well documented. I've been taking fish oils for maybe 5 years now and yes, I'm still depressed and relatively unmotivated too. We can't expect a pill, any pill, to be a magickal cure-all. I still think that they are the most valuable supplement (maybe tied with vitamin D and various amino acids) that one can take.

The more you use your brain, the better it'll function. Often-used pathways are reinforced, while seldom-used ones are degraded. Keep learning, and practise the things that you've already learned. If you're not ambidextrous, try to learn how to do things opposite-handed. Number and word puzzles, along with playing an instrument are excellent mental exercise. Combined with a healthy diet, including having enough essential fatty acids, trace nutrients etc..., and you'll be doing well.

Jamesmartin: you would probably benefit more from therapy than taking more pills. Fish oil is awesome, but it's not really an antidepressant. Omega-3s are excellent neuroprotective and neuroregenerative agents, but I'd personally prefer to get them from plant sources. YMMV, of course.

volitional exercise stimulates the brain to create more nerual stem cells, which eventually become part of the cortex. exercise

Aside from the nutritional and physical stimulation advice which is great, Try to keep yourself in an emotionally healthy environment-within and outside of yourself. Don't get into a habit of thinking negative thoughts and try to get out of toxic relationships.
Although relatively dismissed by the doctors that love to prescribe drugs for problems, getting upset and going through emotional turmoil has an effect on your neurotransmitters. You can try to offset this by trying to deal with shit better, but getting upset is not really a malfunction of the nervous system. Who isn't born with a predisposition for getting upset when life shits all over them?

No matter how good your coping skills are you still need to go easy on your nervous system by avoiding too much external stressors, which can be mental or physical.

Also avoiding drugs should help keep this stuff in balance. Even tobacco and weed mess with your neuros.
