Yes that discussion is a matter of definition.
Ecstacy is probably a much better example: it is a product. Which should contain MDMA if it is the genuine thing, just like regular coffee is expected to be made from coffee beans and contain caffeine.
MDMA however is a chemical compound, there is freebase MDMA and salts like the HCl salt just like DMT is a compound in freebase or as some kind of salt.
But chemically speaking there is just one universal thing that is called N,N-dimethyltryptamine.
So back to the DMT: chemically speaking there is only one type. But as a product there is an infinite number of things that could possibly sold as DMT. Genuine DMT should at least contain the chemical compound in a high purity but it is virtually never absolutely pure.
Extracted DMT can contain other active alkaloids, inactive alkaloids, plant fats and if extracted incorrectly perhaps residual inorganic salts. Extracted DMT with loads of active alkaloids (most often pulled with xylene can be red and is often called jungle spice / red jungle DMT.
Synthetic DMT probably always contains at least a minute amount of precursors (ingredients to make it), badly synthesized product can contain bigger amounts of it.
So you see, even though chemically speaking DMT = DMT there is a multitude of things that can be sold as the "product" DMT.
And yes Mimosa Histilis rootbark is generally accepted as the standard for DMT extractions although that is not to say it contains the ideal mix. It just relatively contains a lot of DMT (good, if that's what you're after) and very little plant fats - greatly reducing the need to de-fat.
