Hey, I've been taking Vyvanse fairly often (3-5x a week) since I'd say November or so. I'm not prescribed, I just get it free from a friend. Anyway, lately I've been noticing that my chest has been feeling really "tight" and that I have a hard time catching my breath. What I mean by that last point is that I can be sitting on a couch or doing anything not physically demanding, and I find myself needing to catch my breath by breathing in really deeply. I also noticed that I have been getting a lot of mucous or phlegm in the back of my throat and it's REALLY annoying.

Anyway, my questions are:
1) Are any of these normal side effects for vyvanse?
2) Is this even from vyvanse?
3) Does anyone have any tips to help any of the problems I've been having? (tight chest, mucous or phlegm in throat, and the constant need to catch my breath)

Thanks a lot

The mucous might have something to do with how amphetamines used to be used in asthma medicines and inhalers (bronco dilator), but this is wild speculation on my part. I have rather little experience with amps. Sounds like you might have some heart related issues though...

What kind of shape are you in OP?
Do you take any other medications or drugs?
Do you have any other experience with amphetamine drugs?

All this is is a guess, but it sounds like there is some underlying condition that the vyvanse has brought out or you're allergic to it (or it's interacting with something else you take). You also might be overly sensitive to amphetamines.

I'd talk to a doctor frankly. And hold off on the vyvanse until you rule out heart related problems or an allergy to the drug.

I'm an 18 y/o male that is in average shape

Do you take any other medications or drugs?
I take (pill) opiates such as oxy/hydrocodone I'd say about 1-4x a month.

Do you have any other experience with amphetamine drugs?
Yes, Adderall, Adderall XR, Focalin, Focalin XR, and Ritalin. I also have experience with MDMA.

At first I thought of the whole allergy idea, but I've been taking these since about November without a problem. This issue just started I'd say last Monday or so. Also, I've been taking 80mg Vyvanse lately all in one go. I started off taking 50mg, then worked up to 80mg, then back down to 50mg for a few months now. I'm back to my level of 80mg because of tolerance.

Tightness of chest could mean something is wrong with your heart, however, since you noted that you have difficulty breathing and you are producing unwanted mucous, I would say that your symptoms are more than likely related to the lungs rather than the heart. Of course, I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV.

Don't think this is Vyvanse related, but try abstaining from use for a week and see if symptoms improve.

I agree with toothpaste, go see a doctor!

Hmm... yea, sounds like it might be another issue that the amp might have acted as a catalyst for. Did you ever experience anything like this from any other amp or amp-like stims (such as those you mentioned)?

Yes, I think the only thing I can recommend in good conscious is that you check this out with a doctor as soon as reasonably possible.

I had never, ever had an issue similar to this until recently. I think what I'm going to do is stop taking Vyvanse, since the side-effects are only present on days that I take it. I won't take any tomorrow and if I have these side-effects, despite not taking it I'll go to the doctor. I actually just found a few pages online about literally the SAME symptoms as mine after people up their dosage. According to most of the pages I read the negative effects should go away after taking it. Let's hope that I can solve this by stopping my Vyvanse usage.

I really appreciate your willingness to help, both of you by the way.

ALSO: I have issues sleeping after I take Vyvanse, and I was wondering if you guys think that taking a low dosage of Diphenhydramine would be safe (25mg of Benadryl melt strips). I used this in the past before my new side-effects and it had worked wonderfully. Do you all think that this low dosage of Benadryl will be safe to use?

Diphen might help. Has it helped you in the past? 50mg is a good starting dose, but don't go over 100mg unless you enjoy dissociative drugs (no). I find melatonin works much better, and is MUCH safer in terms of dosages, than diphen. But I understand if you wanna work with what you have. 25mg of diphen is absolutely safe in your situation though. 50mg would be too, up to 100mg, assuming you're not normally overly sensitive/allergic to it (if you were allergic to it no dose, vyvanse or no vyvanse, would be safe and you'd probably already know it).

Given how long acting it is, it's not unusual to have insomnia issues after taking vyvanse.

Yea, unfortunately neither of us are MDs (or play them on TV hehe nice). I will keep my fingers cross your symptoms go away with cessation of vyvanse!

Hopefully someone with a better knowledge of the human body and whatnot will pop in and give some feedback. If you don't get any answers you might eventually wanna try ADD, but that should be a last ditch sort of thing as it isn't quite the right material. Just obscure. Super obscure.

Anyway, my questions are:

not normal...but possible...lower your dose

2) Is this even from vyvanse?

There's only two ways to find out...#1 would be
Being honest w/a dr. I know I shudder at the thought, too.
Could be something serious though...thinks you know this.

3) Does anyone have any tips to help any of the problems I've been having?

Stop taking the vyvanse and see if it goes away. question no. 2...answered...right?

Your Doctor will take you off of it.... These symptoms are most likely related to anxiety-panic symptoms of over-stimulation (with the vyvanse) my little sister got a panic attack on vyvanse and thought she couldn't breath and was dying

Is this more common with Vyvanse than with Dexedrine IR/ER?

Maybe the fact that it's a prodrug that leads to a constant, albeit low, dosage of d-amp in the bloodstream gets people anxious that it's not wearing off?

for some reason i actually do get a lot more side effects with vyvanse, despite it's "anti-abuse" nature and slow release. however i don't think it's due to that ^.

OP, I get this a lot when i binge on any stimulant, although you have been using vyvanse in a lot more moderation than i, so naturally it took you a while to feel the harsh side effects. I wouldn't worry about it too much, if you cut down or, even better: stop, than this problem will go away within a week or so. however if you continue to use, try not to use it as regularly, maybe cut down the dosage or frequency.

I know this effect can come from chronic drug abuse, especially with alcohol and downers. Your brain sends signals to produce ephidrine and if abuse alcohol for ex, your body will produce more ephidrine than normal. Over time your brain thinks this new eph. level is normal then when stop drinking this normal level is high leading to anxiety attacks. hope this helps but definetly stop taking if enjoy this life.....

I think it depends on the person. I;ve heard more reports of ppl freakin out on vyvanse (albeit they were using it for medicinal pur. not rec) .... I think cause it keeps going when your head is ready to crash

When I take my prescribed dose (60 mg) this never happens and it's barely noticeable I'm on a stimulant. When I take more than a 100 mg the Op's problems sort-of happen and it definately takes way too long to come off of it. IT's very euphoric the first 4 or 5 hours but then it feels like all my dopamine is used up and I just get a really shitty "sped-out" feeling and I HAVE to be doing something (working, cleaning, studying).

Yes, like toothpaste said, it's completely safe. If you're going to take Melatonin I would recommend taking it at least an hour before you want to be asleep. There are a lot of nice over the counter medications that work pretty well. My favorites are the natural ones that include melatonin, L-tryptophan, valerian root etc. If those don't work you can also try an OTC medication called Unisom which is very effective but leaves me feeling kind of shitty in the morning. Keep us updated on how things went!

25mg DPH would be safe to add, but remember that after dosing antihistamines for a few consecutive days, they begin to lose their sedative effects to an extent.

after not using vyvanse today, I can honestly say that my condition has gotten better, although the breathing issue still occurred throughout the day, although MUCH less frequently.

I think that the issue was just my body needing a break from the constant increased heart rate and so on. I'll let you all know how I am after a day or two. And thanks a LOT to all of you. You guys really helped.
