Vignettes in no particular order

Two months ago
You thought you were alone
Whimpering in the painful dark

This morning
Tiny silver flecks of you all over my shoes
like lint to be dusted away
you're now dust

Sixteen years ago
You barked and cried
and cried for a family
that let you go

Last night
Looked for you in the driveway
Till the beams revealed a fallen
pair of white shoes, a shapeless shadow
that was almost you

Five years ago
I fed you jerky because you
didn't remember me
after Australia

Tonight
Missed you when I opened the gate
'cos you know, you forget how to come home.
Then I remembered—you've already left.

But then you were you
I held you tightly in my chest
and let you go with a breath.

I've said my bye, haven't I?
So what the hell is this?

From your damp nose
To just behind your ear
To the ridge above your brow
A scratch and a pat
My hand remembers

Wet sloppy you
Scruffy you
Damn you

Even though they're in 'no particular order' they hang together and flow really well - they're about the same relationship?

I like this one especially:

But then you were you
I held you tightly in my chest
and let you go with a breath.

That really struck a chord with me... our cat went missing last year and for so long after, I'd expect to see him sitting on the step when I drove in the driveway.

Lovely as ever <3

Yeah they refer to the same relationsip ie. my dog :( Maybe in some bits it feels like a different relationship but that's the thing about pets I guess? You always think of them as people and you miss them as much if not more. Sigh.

It's disconcerting isn't it. My head keeps turning and my eye keeps looking and my mind keeps expecting but there's only a space there. Feels like I'm looking at a hologram that no one else sees. Old age is making me soft and sentimental 8) :(
