Finally, after years in the making (and years for us waiting), we're a little over a month away from the release of SPORE.

From the makers of the Sims series of games comes the latest in their simulation engines. Supposedly a "massive single player online" game which spans numerous genres and styles, this take you mutation by mutation from single cell organism through to space-faring species.

i've been looking out for this for years.

This game looks awesome. Maxis always makes great games and this one looks like it is just as in depth as many of their pervious city builder games.

I heard in their beta testing there were already hundreds of thousands of different species created. I can see this game becoming wildly popular just like the sims.

Unfortunately, no multiplayer means I probably won't even play this.

Also, the amount of time it's been pushed back and stuff even after it already appeared to be in a finished state seems to indicate to me that it's not that fun and they've been trying to add fun.

We'll see.

It doesn't have regular multiplayer but from I understand it will send the creatures you create to other people's universes and it will tell you how well they are doing on other people's planets.

This and CoD4 will be the first games I liked enough to purchase (instead of pirate) in 2008.

Yeah that's where any enemies you will go up against will come from, which will add some diversity to every aspect of the game. Who knows, maybe one day they will make a full online game? Doubtful tho.

This is looking pretty good right now? Has anyone had a play around with the creature creator? It's really fun, people have made pretty decent looking pokemon and creatures that look like game controllers and of course lots of weird penis monsters.

been looking forward to this game.. but i think it is going to be a let down in the end... building creatures to raise seems like a 1 hit wonder and i doubt that i play it a 2nd time through

That is just a small part of the game. After your creatures start to mate you start to control their civilization and try to take over the world/universe.

Of course the game won't be a hit with everyone but if you liked the Sim City games I am sure you will like this.

It looks great...Something about creating life that appeals to me. I wonder why they titled it Spore? They probably couldn't market, SimGod... :D

Although, with all the juice they're putting into the creature/hut/vehicle editor, I can see those parts of the game sucking up the majority of playtime...Knowing me, I'll probably be too wore out to sim the planet after I'm done perfecting a new race of super predator...

Cue 6 day impossibility/difficulty religious overtones

I am pretty unimpressed on many levels. The game itself is very nicely crafted - great graphics and the sound/music is good and the controls and customization is very very nice. The problem is that it is incredibly INCREDIBLY easy and very very short. Of the 5 phases it took me about 8 hours total for me to complete them and please note that I took my time for the most part. I did everything there is to do on pretty much each stage. 8 hours compared to any other game.. give me a break.

1. Cell stage. Equivalent to pacman. My favorite stage because it is so simple yet I love the way you grow and its like you are looking at a microscope and changing the view from say 40x to 30x to 20x to 10x each stage so the things that were huge are now your snacks as you progress. I also like how the tide affects you so its like you are really struggling against the current. You also have to swim away from predators desperately and chase down prey (or eat plants and compete against other herbivores). Problem? It is over in 20 minutes. Tops.

2. Creature phase. Not even sure what to compare this to other than to say taking a nap. Zzzzz. All you do is run from point A to point B and click on DNA piles that give you new abilities or either kill other creators or try to "befriend them." Either way you are targeting things and pressing 1,2,3,4 over and over. Talk about boring. This part took zero skill and I've played through it 3 times and tried it as carnivore/omnivore/herbivore and tried the kill and friend approach each. Either way its incredibly boring and easy.

3. Tribal phase. A really simplified game of Civ. I'm not even sure this was really a phase to be honest. I told my guys to run over and kill an enemy village and they had no problems doing it by themselves. I did it 4 more times and won. I think it took 15 minutes.

4. Civ stage. An even more simplified game of civ. Again - build some units and tell them to go conquer stuff. Then go to the kitchen and make something to eat while your troops win the game for you. Building things in cities and making different kinds of cities, as far as i could tell, was irrelevant. I simply built tanks and destroyed the entire map.

5. Space stage. The stage they obviously spent the most time on because it has the most depth. This stage has missions and a lot of things you can do. Its sort of a split between Civ and Galactic Civilizations. There is a lot of freedom here and a lot of things to do. This is the only redeeming quality to the entire game to be honest. I could see myself tweaking out on the Space stage and really trying to do a lot of different things in it if I had the free time right not to dedicate to it (work is killing my free time).

I guess the 1 good thing about this game is that in order to really feel like I'm getting the most of out my space stage gaming, I would feel the need to play through starting at the cell stage and really develop my creature/tribe/civ into what I want it to be in the space stage so I would replay those stages a few times to get that experience and they aren't too crazy long to make it a waste of time.

As a lot of other reviewers are saying - this isn't a hardcore gamer's game at all. This is the type of game where you want to sit back and design a creature and simply play for the fun of watching your creature interact fluidly with the environment you create and having the freedom to add your personal touch and have it all actually work properly without bugs and stuff. Also its kind of cool to be running around with a new creature you are working on and have an alien space ship come by and you look up and realize its a space ship you designed and is being flown by your old creature which is now a space empire. Kind of a fun experience.

Overall though i think they could have done a LOT LOT more with the first 4 stages. They are very polished just very lacking in depth.

I'm playing it on hard mode now and its pretty dang hard. Cell phase definitely took more strategy and there is far less food and far more competition. The enemies aren't just harder - there's a variety of challenges. Scarcity of food and upgrades, currents are stronger, big creatures are more prevalent etc. I'm liking it. Now to the creature stage.

aanallein, what would you rate it out of 5 on hard mode then?

Also, would someone who played it all in hard mode have a much stronger end result that will be much better on someone else's game if they only played on easy mode?

I was going to buy this game but after reading about the DRM shit they put into the core of your computer I'm not so sure. I don't want some corporate shit fucking up my computer.

Too bad because I have been a fan of Maxis games since I was 10. SimTower, Sim Farm, SimCity2000, SimCity4, The Sims, The Sims 2, I loved all of them!!

DRM= Digital Rights Management

The particular software Spore uses is SecuRom, which is basically a rootkit (I learned all this a few days ago when I looked into buying Spore). A rootkit is essentially a computer virus that installs itself deep within the operating system and changes fundamental elements of the operating system.

This scares me for numerous reasons. First of all, EA/Maxis didn't disclose that Spore include SecuRom. Secondly, given the nature of my 'interests' I don't want corporate software deep within my operating system, possibly monitoring my computer usage. Thirdly, even if you uninstall Spore, SecuRom will remain on your computer forever. (wiki'ed)

So unfortunately I think I will have to pass on this game, which is too bad because the more I learn about it the more fun it seems :(

hard mode was fun initially and quickly became a more tedious run through of easy mode. waste of money in my opinion. no depth at all.
