Very Bizarre Morphine Experience

About an hour ago, I took 180mg of ER morphine sulfate. I crushed it up and put it in a shot glass filled with water and scotch. Let it soak and took the shot.

About 10 minutes after the initial euphoria my neck and upper torso started becoming very tense. I was legitimately IN PAIN ON MORPHINE!

Is there some kind of crazy side effect that could've caused this? I've never experience this before and I typically take around this much morphine whenever I use - less if I got a potentiator.

All help and input appreciated - thanks

it's a pretty common side effect - especially of the stronger opiates.
if we're just talking about a tightness in the chest/abdomen/neck area.
OP-is this your usual ROA? It may be anything..just any little variable you're used to..
maybe you dosed on an empty stomach, maybe you've something in your system
that you don't usually..maybe it was some REALLY good scotch...
the question is really...is it easing now..because it doesn't generally last...
and if it has eased up/stopped altogether..then it's probably not anything to be worried about.
I know you said you mixed it with scotch and water, but mixing opiates and alcohol
generally is an unnecessary risk..but im sure you already know that.
careful. good luck.

Yes, this is my typical ROA. I am too scared to use a syringe and I would prefer never going down that route anyway.
I typically mix my opiates with alcohol and ALWAYS on an empty stomach. If I ate prior to dosing I would probably need 250mg! I don't know why this occurs because most people tell me eating with opiates makes them stronger but I have never experienced such. I don't see how it being good scotch would make a difference, but for the record it was $10 scotch lol.

Anyways thanks for the reply it was much appreciated. Forgot to mention that the neck tension eventually dissipated but it was a side effect I never experienced before.

I'm gonna chalk this up to having some chemical imbalance that I have never had before that interacts with morphine. I can't guess anything else. It couldn't have been something I ate as I previously stated I took them on an empty stomach, and I always drink this kind of scotch pretty much every day, so anytime I've done morphine in the past few years has been on this stuff.

Very interesting you said this is a common side effect though, I had trouble finding reliable information on it. Thanks anyway!

yeah I've not gone down the iv road yet either...
I always dose on an empty stomach too..and yeah all that would do is make me tired I think.
besides later, opiates always make me hungry..
also: the good scotch was just a bad joke. I do that. a lot.
morphine is one of the most sedating of all opiates so I think it's stupid to mix it with alcohol..but that's not judgement...
I've done some pretty stupid shit myself..sometimes I think people don't give oral morphine the respect it deserves..it's what's rx'd to you
when you're dying and it's no joke. there's always a risk.
because as you can see...you don't always know...even your normal dose can affect you differently from time to time.
if this stays open for awhile maybe somebody else can back me up on the chest and ab tightness side effect..
but you should know..if you get that kind of tension/spasms along w/shallow breathing, heartrate, cold clammy skin, it can also be a sign of OD.
alcohol increases that risk too.

I drank a lot the night before, could it be possible there was still alcohol in my system from the night before in addition to the alcohol i was already drinking when I dosed, and if so could it really have had this significant of an effect?

Good question! Morphine has some affinity for receptors other than mu opiod receptors, so in high doses stimulating effects like this can occur. I think this it's more common with morphine than like hydrocodone or oxycodone. Check out thebaine, its more of a stimulant than a depressant. I'm not sure of the mechanism of action but I think it is similar to strychnine, which blocks glycines inhibitory effects on nerves causing nerves to fire more often leading to the tension you noticed.
