I saw a place of such immense beauty, that although I have a terrible time expressing in words how it looked, I’ll give it a try anyway.
The sun was just setting, a colossal flame, burning about half way between the sky and horizon. There was an occasional cloud, stroking pink across the burnt orange of the pending twilight. The colors from the sun bled onto the surface of opaque water, creating a mirror that reflected only sunlight. Dark waters turned white as the salty sea splashed against rocky cliffs, crashing in soothing patterns of chttschhhhhhh. . . . . . . . , chttschhhhhhh. . . . . . . . . Over and over again they crashed as the tide came in.
Traces of sweet jasmine intermingled with the salty air of the sea. The scents filled the air as the cool evening breeze swept along the rocky shoreline.
A lighthouse sitting on top of a rocky cliff turned its light on as the sky began to cast shadows upon the earth. Only streaks of orange remained visible. They too began to fade and creatures of the night began to sir.
One by one these creatures lent the night air their song, adding one instrument upon another. First the owls cried out their soft whooo-whoo-who-who, fading day to night, calling out to one another. The crickets that began so softly became the foremost hum of the evening until the frogs joined them in their opus. The screeching of bats invaded as well, and so it went, until finally, the night was one with the sounds of nature.
The aggression of the incoming tide had abated, and instead the crashing waves had become a gentler wash upon the rocky shoreline. With each wave that touched the rocks, phosphorescent microorganisms sprang to life, lighting up the dark, cool water with a bright green glow.
The moon was waning, and just a sliver of luminosity in the black sky. The stars were brilliant without the lights of the city encroaching on their magnificence. The depth of the water reflected the shard of light as a silver ripple upon its surface.
The air had grown thick with moisture, bringing stillness to the night. This left a gentle stir among the uppermost portions of the trees and an almost ghostlike rustling of leaves. Trees and plants closer to the ground were laden with moisture and infrequently dripped the built up condensation.
Gone were the traces of jasmine that filled the day, instead replaced by a scent akin to freshly rained upon earth intermingled with that of the sea.
As the sun began to shine the moon began to fade, and the night once again gave way to day. Events would unfold in much the same way as they had before, albeit with differences, for each day is unique, and must be appreciated as so.
I have seen this place of such immense beauty, although I have never been there. If I could find it I would surely visit. For now though, I must be satisfied to see it as I did the very first time, in my mind.
