I know there are other threads about Tramadol already started but I would like to make my own paying special attention to the specific generic brands available as I find that quality ranges GREATLY between certain manufacturers. I would also like to discuss Tramadol in general as it has recently been scheduled in my state (NY) as a schedule IV controlled substance.
First and for most I would like to discuss my position. I have been in a lot of trouble with the law and done some time in state prison for drug offenses and my doctor who has been my doctor for my entire life knows all about it and about my history of opiate addiction. I am one of those people who has always frequented the emergency room for "tooth aches" and other bull crap pain and I am very good at getting what I want from the ER doctors. Sometimes I walk out with some Percocet or Vicodin, sometimes I have had to settle for Tramadol, but its better than nothing. Anyways a few months ago, thanks to ISTOP which is a new way for doctors in New York to track prescriptions you have filled my doctor called me out on it at one of my visits. He also prescribed me Klonopin 1mg 2x daily, which I am very grateful for as I truly have horrible anxiety issues and find the Klonopin to be very effective in treating my anxiety 2mg a day seems to do the trick. He also is kind enough to script me Remeron 45mg at bedtime, to help with my insomnia and depression and I have to say that too works very well. Due to being on all these meds he has me come in every 4-6 weeks for check ups. As I was saying he called me out because he saw I had visited the ER 5 times in 3 months making out with a script to 12 percocet, 30 percocet and 3 scripts to 20 tramadol. He told me straight up that it looks bad that I'm going to the ER for pain all the time and coming out with narcotics. He told me he would be willing to renew my Tramadol script if I agreed to stop going to the ER all the time. So ever since then I have stayed away from the ER, and he has been writing me scripts to Tramadol, and for some reason playing with the dosage. First it was 60 of them a 10 day supply, then 30 a 5 day supply then 30 a 2 week supply, then 30 a 7 day supply and recently he gave me 60 a 10 day supply again. In other words I can take 6 50 mg Tramadol a day. I have been busy lately working a new job where a lot of heavy lifting and hard labor is required, I had the nurse relay this message to him. Also I have had some teeth that need fixing for the past few months, but due to my busy work schedule I havent been able to get some cavities that "hurt" filled. I told my Doc I feel withdrawals without the tramadol. He told me I can continue to use it for my minor dental pain and if i beat my self up at work too hard. Hes a very understanding and helpful doc.
Sorry for droning on, I have a tendency to do that. My goal in making this thread is to outline the very noticeable differences I have noticed depending on where I get my scripts filled and Tramadols overall effectiveness in helping an opiate addict "get by". I have been using opiates for nearly 8 years. Everything from tylenol 3's to Heroin. Recently I have grown up some and tried to stay away from the harder stuff but to occasionally indulge in Percocet or Vicodin (which has recently been moved to a schedule II drug) and is increasingly hard to come by along with the percocet. My DOC is Nucynta by route of IV, what a rush. I love it. Anyways when I am trying my best to behave I go for weeks at a time just taking my Tramadol, and even with a HIGH opiate tolerance I am actually able to get by on 4 tramadol a day. 2 at 6am and 2 at 6pm. I do not catch a buzz at all from this dose but it does keep my withdrawals at bay and actually does help quite a bit with my general ache from the rough work day.
Brands that I have tried include the following starting with the weakest brand and ending with the most effective including imprints. rated 1-10
Zydus(round 319) Score: 1
Amneal(round AN 627), Score: 4
Caraco Sun Pharma (oblong 377) Score: 6
Teva (TV/58 Score: 7
Northstar (oblong NO24) Score 9
I hear Mylan has a very effective brand but I have not come across a pharmacy that carries it, I hear Walgreens does but havent bothered making the trip there to try it. I literally find that the Northstar brand which is hard to come by is about 9 times as effective as the bunk Zydus brand. Amneal is very cheap and seems to be the Wal-Mart brand and is impossible to catch a buzz off of no matter how much you take. Caraco seems to be the golden standard generic Tramadol and is the most common by far, it is effective enough for me to use, but I prefer the Teva Brand or the Northstar Brand. With the Caraco, Teva, and Northstar brand you can actually catch a "nod" or get "high" if you want to at a dose of 300-400mg (depends on your tolerance of course) at this point I need to take about 500-600mgs of a good brand to catch a buzz, but that isnt my goal any more. It appears that I have pretty much been put on a Tramadol Maintenance, which I have never heard of, but it seems like my doc has generously and creatively and successfully put me on. Yes I do have slips, but when I am able to control my self it is a simple twice a day dose of 100mg , I do not get high at all, It helps control cravings, and keeps me off of the hard stuff.
Tramadol Seizures; I have never had one and I have taken over 1000mg 20 50mg pills in one day. I do understand some people are susceptible to seizures when taking tramadol at doses of 400+ (or even less in some cases). My ex girlfriend was on tramadol for a while and once triggered a seizure by taking about 25 of them in a 24 hour span, after that she had a seizure at a 300mg dose, and even a 150mg dose. She is now scared to death of tramadol and rarely will take it, only if she is dope sick and only in small doses. I hope I never get seizures from it. I don't think I will as I now always use my tramadol responsibly and rarely exceed the recommended daily dose.
In conclusion I would like to say that I find tramadol to be be very useful. I know some people find they get no relief from it, but in my opinion maybe these people aren't being patient enough. With tramadol it takes about an hour to kick in, and it keeps working for 6+ hours. Maybe not a buzz, or a high. But if you WERE dope sick, you will feel some energy and your symptoms will go away, even when you have a pretty big habit like I did/do. I know Ultram/Tramadol is more popular over in europe than it is here in the states. I wonder why this is. I wonder if they have more effective generics or if they prescribe the Brand name Ultram which I hear is by far superior to any generic. I also want to mention that Tramadol comes in extended release formulations. I personally have gotten the 300mg ER tramadol and found it to be very powerful when chewed to bypass the ER coating.
I would really like people to weigh in with their experiences with tramadol, and its generic forms. Im sure I will get plenty of the "tramadol is garbage " replies to those people I say, go ahead and shoot a gram of dope if you want to nod out all day and be un able to function, rock on. My angle is that tramadol is a very useful tool, I like it, and it seems most doctors are quite comfortable prescribing it because they are all under the impression it is relatively non-addictive Unfortunately that is not that case and I have horrible withdrawals if I run out. Thats the world we live in though. Hydrocodone and Oxycodone are becoming increasingly hard to come by (Still relatively easy to come by, lol, but harder) Did I mention I love Tramdol's big sister Nucynta (Tapentadol)?
