Drug ban plea after student dies
The mother of a 21-year-old student who died after taking the drug GBL has called for an inquiry into why the substance has not been banned.

Police are investigating whether Hester Stewart, from Brighton, unknowingly took the drug. She died on Sunday.

GBL is illegal in many countries but has not been banned in Britain.

A Home Office spokesman said the government accepted there was harm associated with the misuse of GBL and was looking at options for control.

But Miss Stewart's mother, Maryon, said: "I'm absolutely devastated I've lost my daughter. She wasn't the kind of girl who would risk her life.

"There should be a formal inquiry to find out why it's been banned in Canada and America, but the UK cannot get its act together and ban it for personal use.

"I'm in a state of shock. I know my daughter would have wanted me to make others aware of the dangers and make her death more meaningful if that's even vaguely possible."

Mrs Stewart added: "She was the most caring, beautiful, intelligent, warm, wonderful girl you could ever wish to meet."

Sussex Police are investigating whether Miss Stewart, a student of molecular medicine at Sussex University, unknowingly took the drug during an evening out with friends in Brighton.

The Home Office evidence showed its misuse was low, but "we are concerned that its use appears to be increasing".

"GBL has a number of legitimate uses, such as cleaning agents, paints and nail polish, and we will consult with the chemical industry and the wider public over the coming months," the spokesman added.

A post-mortem examination is being held with toxicology results expected in the coming week.

Was bound to happen at some point... wonder if she was drinking alcohol as well?

Time to stock up kids!

I doubt a student of molecular medicine took GBL without knowing what it was. Another parent blaming a drug instead of their childs irresponsibleness, *sigh*.

Banning a substance won't prevent people from using it. How about trying to educate people. Or maybe if a safe drug like cannabis was legal people would be more inclined to use that instead.

Someone can chug a bottle of whiskey and kill themselves. Is that a reason to outlaw alcohol? People got to learn responsible use of these substances. Furthermore, drugs should be legal and regulated so that purity is controlled.

How many people die every year from smoking and alcohol compared to GBL/GHB? Yet they make a huge cry over one person dying from GBL. The parent should face up to the fact that her daughter was irresponsible with the drug and died as a result of it. They always say people get slipped GBL/GHB but really who is going to waste these drugs besides a few pervert rapists?

More then likely she just got high and took too much. Maybe had a few drinks with it to.

"There should be a formal inquiry to find out why it's been banned in Canada and America, but the UK cannot get its act together and ban it for personal use.

It's been banned here because our governments are stupid reactionary twats. They want to ruin the fun for everybody due to a few douchbags that can't handle their drugs. There should be a formal inquiry into that so it can be made legal again here in canada.

She wasn't the kind of girl who would risk her life.

This really pisses me off. So what did her daughter live in a fucking bubble? I guess she never had a drink, had a cigarette, drove her car too fast, drove without a seatbelt or crossed the road for fuck sakes!

Ya know if they banned alcohol it wouldnt only cut down on deaths due to drinking too much but also DWI's and DUI's and all the deaths due to that as well.

It pisses me off that so many people die from alcohol related stuff and the when one person dies from a drug like GHB/MDMA they say that drugs are evil. There are so few death from drugs other than opiates I don't see what the paranoia is about. Most people are responsible with their drugs and then a few dumb asses come around and ruin it for the rest of us.

I've been doing drugs for 11 years and never had a problem, no hospitalization, just fun times.

I wouldn't go making too much noises about alcohol and smokes because your not showing any pros, just how bad they are and their more likely to ban alcohol and smokes then to legalise other drugs.

heh. yeah - I know what you are saying. Luckily, the amount of taxed raised on said goods will keep them legal for some time yet.

Static mind, I have to disagree really, they could never ban booze and smokes. Doing that would make such a huge chunk of society "criminals" in the same sense we are, they would in turn be likely to sympathize with our cause of personal freedom once theirs had been taken away. I think the outlawing of booze and cigarettes would dramatically increase the suppost for legalization of some or all currently illegal drugs.

The point of the argument anyway isn't to achieve a scenario that I just described but to highlight the fact that we are being no more irresponsible or putting ourseves in more danger than most of society does in regards to substance abuse. Most people write it off thinking that so many more people use these legal substances compared to illicit ones and that is what causes the big difference in statistics.

their more likely to ban alcohol and smokes then to legalise other drugs.

Excellent point.

This is yet another desperate example of the ever-present need for more and louder harm-reduction information regarding drug-use.

Watch this space and continue pressing - eloquently but persistently - for change.....
