San Francisco bans e-cigarette sales, becoming the first US city to do so

San Francisco on Tuesday became the first city in the country to ban e-cigarettes after city officials approved an ordinance that prohibits selling nicotine pods or devices that haven’t been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

City supervisors last week voted unanimously 11 to 0 in favor of the measure. San Francisco’s rules require two votes in order for an ordinance to be finalized.

“There is so much we don’t know about the health impacts of these products, but we do know that e-cigarette companies are targeting our kids in their advertising and getting them hooked on addictive nicotine products,” San Francisco mayor London Breed said in a statement.

“We need to take action to protect the health of San Francisco’s youth and prevent the next generation of San Franciscans from becoming addicted to these products.”

Federal regulators are trying to combat what they’re calling an “epidemic” of teen vaping while local governments pursue their own actions, including banning flavors like bubble gum and fruit punch. San Francisco outlawing e-cigarettes altogether marks a harsh rebuke of the industry, particularly market leader Juul, which is headquartered in the city.

That's really dumb. So much for harm reduction

yeah. while i don’t support either — gotta be anti-prohibition and all — banning cigarette sales would be more logical.

Really anti-harm reductionist... I hope someone finds an easy way to extract nicotine from homegrown tobacco and dissolve it in propylene glycol for use as e-liquid, in case they are banned more widely. The problem is that the carcinogenic nitrosamines from the tobacco plant can also end up in the resulting solution, eliminating some of the health benefits compared to tobacco smoking.

Even if e-cigarettes sales are banned in the city, people can still buy them online, thankfully, and even if they were banned nationally, I don't think they would go so far as making nicotine a controlled substance. I don't think anyone will have to resort to tobacco extractions!

People will just smoke more cigs then. You'd think a liberal stronghold like SF would be past drug prohibition. This is the kind of shit that scares me about being liberal. Its almost tyrranical. This is beyond stupid cigs are still legal but not e-cigs? So much for liberals being open to drugs.

There was a time when I identified as 'liberal', but now I just try to be progressive. If that's the same thing, then I'm an outstanding idiot.

Typical useless d-bags in government patting themselves on their back thinking they are doing a good thing while the people addicted now move on to cigs...brilliant. This worked real well with them taking away prescription opioids and pushing people into heroin/fentanyl.
