This is a good idea, at least temporarily. Afghan pomegranates are supposedly some of the best in the world, and are worth more per acre than poppies (for the farmer).
However the horrible soil conditions in Helmand are a big factor in why that area is home to the majority of poppies cultivated in Afghanistan. They simply can't grow any other crops successfully and consistently.
