So, I've been on Ambien CR for forever and it's been a huge help. I take it when I really need it and I sleep wonderfully (as opposed to staying up for three days, which I occasionally do). I just got my routine prescription two weeks ago and am not due back to the shrink until December. However-my schedule just got a HUGE change and I'm now basically working 16 hour shifts back to back-meaning I have about 4-5 hours to sleep in between. The CR stays in my system too long, so I need to go back to a shirt-term sleeping pill. I used to be on Sonata before I had trouble STAYING asleep. I made an appointment for tomorrow to see if I can get a prescription for the Sonata again. My question is-is that even possible since they're both considered "narcotics"? A.) I don't want my doctor or pharmacy to think I'm just trying to get drugs, B.) I don't want to waste money or annoy my doctor if he won't be able to prescribe it. Or perhaps should I wait until my Ambien CR is technically gone (past the refill date) and try to switch then? Not trying to be sneaky OR wasteful. Anybody know?

Tell your doctor this and see what he says.

It's entirely dependent on the doctor you're talking to, your medical history, etc. We can't really say.

As far as I know there's nothing against having two seperate controlled substance sch.4 prescriptions as long as your doctor OKs it. For instance pain patients can receive both breakthrough and continuous pain meds.
