Infamous Murders: Political Killings

826_show_image_xlarge.jpg

Throughout history the dirty underworld of politics has been linked with murder. Infamous Murders examines how three people were killed for their beliefs.

In February 1965, three men shot Malcom X as he addressed a rally from the stage of the Audubon Ballroom in Manhattan. Malcolm was a deeply religious man and a role model for the black community. He had joined the Nation of Islam movement and had great success preaching its Muslim doctrine around the country. But when he discovered that Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammed enjoyed secret sexual relations with at least six women, he formed a breakaway Mosque. Rivalry grew between the two factions and it was no surprise to discover that the three men apprehended by the police for the murder were all Nation of Islam members. They were sentenced to life imprisonment.

On 15 April 1920, two security guards were shot while delivering the weekly wages in a small town outside Boston. Police suspected a connection with the anarchists, an anti-capitalist political movement gaining ground in the US. Known anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were picked up during a routine search and found to be carrying handguns and radical political leaflets. Although there was little evidence, both men were charged with murder. At the trial, the prosecution had neither witnesses nor any connection between the guns found and the murders. The close-knit Italian community was convinced that Sacco and Vanzetti were set up because of their anarchist beliefs. They were both found guilty as charged and after the judge refused to grant a retrial, executed on 22 August 1927.

Former police officer and fireman Dan White was elected as a San Francisco city supervisor in 1977. After a strong anti-gay campaign, he assumed office alongside Harvey Milk, the first openly gay activist at City Hall. On 27 November 1978 Dan White, apparently disillusioned with politics, climbed through a City Hall window armed with a gun. He shot Mayor George Moscone four times and Supervisor Harvey Milk five times. White's defence was depression caused by too much junk food and the jury sentenced him to just eight years for voluntary manslaughter. Five years later he was released on parole and violent demonstrations by the city's gay community confirmed the general belief that White had got away with murder.
