You need a two step approach to dealing with social anxiety or anxiety of most kinds. One is dealing with the neurological/re-wiring of your brain, the other is dealing with your Mind. The brain will naturally follow and re-wire over time so get the problem at its root.. your Mind. Easier said than done I know, but if you put enough attention to it you can bring about change.. turning the anxiety from a constant annoyance into an unemotional memory of the past you.
As someone else said.. avoidance. Do not avoid your situations of fear. This includes the rituals you engage in BEFORE you reach that place or situation. I find myself going through certain OCD like checks before going out to a place of fear.. it is essential you break those patterns because they contribute to the anxiety. When you do this you may feel uneasy at that particular moment.. do not give into the temptation to engage in the previous pattern, it is merely an ego of your Mind screaming for your attention. If you give it energy by acknowledging it, it will persist.. if you refuse to give into its demands, eventually it will wither and die >
Once the Mind is put in order, the brain will follow over time.. time being crucial here, like anything in life you need determination and persistence. Don't try to supress the feeling or mental moment when it arises, just observe it and let it pass.. your thoughts are NOT YOU, you have the choice whether to give attention to them or not!
Medications can help mask the problem but do nothing to solve the underlying root cause, which is mental not neurological. You are reacting to a situation/percieved threat when there is none, based upon previous associations and mental patterns or memories. Doing some introspection into why it started in the first place is also recommended as this takes away a lot of the fear. If you stare enough at the problem area in your Mind long enough with determination instead of fear, eventually it will collapse. Also recommend bettering your diet and sleep patterns so you have more energy available to you for removing the problems area in your Mind.
