Please, this is not meant to offend, just an observation... Please dont flame

Why does everyone feel the need to assert that one style of music is so much better than another? Music is a matter of taste... why can people not let sleeping dragons lie, and simply accept that a certain 'sound' is just not for them.
It just seems that there is so much bitching going on about Techno vs NRG etc. I love my techno, but I also love NRG. Why do these styles have to be mutually exclusive?
One style of music isn't any more valid than another. For all the techno purists, please stop being so self righteous; surely people can be free to like what they want, without fear of being berretted for doing so...
ITS *ALL* GOOD... m'kay

I agree, music is a matter of personal taste. I feel that I can apreciate just about all types of music, but it will vary from night to night what I actually 'enjoy'. For example, sometimes I can't get enough NRG, and other times I get a tad sick of being told to "get up and dance" over and over at 175 beats per minute
wink.gif
.
I think that if you are open minded enough to apreciate a wide range of styles, then you will find it hard to be dissapointed. People who resign themselves to one style are really closing the door to potentially great nights because they "can't stand the music".

uh what they all said, totally .... i love heaps of different kinds of music ... depends on the mood im in ... sometimes i wanna do the bouncy hardhouse thing, other times i love listening to techno and sometimes psy goa does it for me cause i feel like something more meaningful
smile.gif

i think variety is the key here ....

~peace out~

Haven't we all agreed previously that it is "just a matter of taste" ???
I guess I'll have to agree tho - some Techno PURISTS, including myself, are very one-eyed. So what? It doesn't mean I don't like other styles of music! I enjoy some Trance, Psy Trance, Trip Hop, Breaks, Big Beat, Tech Funk, some D&B - as long as it is QUALITY.
That is the key word here: QUALITY. There is plenty of shite music out there - including some absolutely shite Techno!
I really don't know what else to say without offending anyone, so nothing else is going to be said...

I agree completely.
There are some people who use this site (no names given on purpose) who like to tell everyone over and over what music they like and how good it is.
I dont give a fuck!
I like the music that I like and I'm not going to be converted by anyone else's tastes!
And neither is anyone in here!
So please no more attempts to convert everyone on bluelight to appreciators of your musical taste!

ouch!!! *rubs his head and pick up a container of baba ganoosh and throws it at him with Universal Nation blarring in the background*

I definately agree that all genres have something to contribute to the scene as a whole & should be respected as valid musical expressions even if you don't personally enjoy them. (Man, do i sound like a wank! But wait, there's more!) However, i also think that without the passionate, one-eyed DJ's, who can't hear anything except what's on their own turntables, each genre would not have been developed to the level that it has.
In other words, if everyone enjoyed all genres & noone was scarily obsessed with any particular style, then we would only have one style. So, although the purists get under our skin at times, i also think we should appreciate them for the variety of sounds they have given us to listen to.
To digress slightly: Dan, i'm not having a go at you here, i just want to discuss something you said about 'quality'. I'm assuming you mean quality in a technical sense, referring to the skills of the DJ. I know that since you're a DJ, you 'hear' the music differently from me & judge it differently but from my perspective, the music doesn't have to be of high quality, technically speaking, for me to enjoy it. This thread is about respecting the fact all genres of music can be enjoyed by people & that none are better than any other. I would also like to add that poor quality music can be just as enjoyable as high quality music. Just because YOU can hear every little fault & everything that's missing in someones set, IMO doesn't mean I shouldn't have a ball dancing to it.
Peace.

sunni: No, I wasn't refering to "quality" in the sense of DJ'ing. I was talking about quality production.
ie. Not cheesy, original, good layering of sounds, well-constructed, etc. As I said, there's plenty of crap Techno out there as well...
But yes, I am very picky when it comes to quality of DJ'ing

I agree with ya PeterPoppa, tho sometimes passion can be confused with attempts at conversion. As long as people are only saying that the kind of music they like is awesome, and are not bagging others, then everything would be fine... (pfft yeah right)
Anyway, I like everything to a certain degree, tho I'm not all that keen on the cheesy commercial side of all kinds of music, tho that's because it's most often low quality music which appeals to the majority of listeners and makes it harder for people producing good music to get their music heard. People seem to think, "yeah that's good, but it just doesn't get me going like this cheesy stuff"
Regardless, all styles of music have their own appeal, but some appeal more, and will always appeal more, to certain people.

she then crabed me by the ears and said.Kiss me where it smells funny!

I'm not that knowledgable about music but I know what I like, when I go "dancing" I really like stuff with good production quality, layering ect (as decimal dan said)
But I also appreciate the commercial crap stuff like Britney, I think music like that is good popular music and I am in awe of how popular it is. I reckon it would be really hard to produce something that would be so universally liked, bought and listened to. anyway blah blah blah
ps I have a weakness for all things kitch paricularly art (a la Jeff Koons), this might explain my penchant for spice girls, britney ect

Question for Decimal Dan...
Dan, who decides what is 'quality' and what is not? Just like taste, 'quality' is an arbitery notion.
Your definition, as far as I can tell, is pretty much technically based... however, for someone who knows next to nothing about production, your idea of quality means nothing to them.
Not just for Dan...
There is no way of measuring taste or quality. Obviously public opinion doesn't work... I mean fuck, we elected John Howard in under a popular vote...
I admitt that I can be music snob, but as much as it sticks in my throat to say... shouldn't we leave people alone to enjoy whatever they want to.
(Perhaps if ppl actually let this happen, then there would be just 'band wagon' jumping...?

Its all about the Electronic Acupuncture - Darth Maul Style

Peter: Yeah your right. People's opinions of what is "quality" music can also be different. Basically, anything that is original (minus ANY cheese) and gets the heart pumping faster than usual, is quality.
And yes, its true that different music will get different people's heart's pumping. But I call for originality.
Example: Sitting at @mosphere one night listening to some hard house/NRG. The amount of times I heard the SAME fucking drum builds - it was driving me nuts!
Example 2: I know some Techno Lovers will hate me for this, but I find a lot Chris Leibing's production is all too similar. Sure, it's fine for a producer to have a certain sound, but some orginality has to creep in there somewhere...
So there you go. To answer your question, it doesn't have to be technically perfect at all. I just like to hear original sounds. It's known as evolution...
