Cocaine use rise alarms advisers

Drug advisers are to review the effects of cocaine, amid concerns youngsters increasingly take it in the mistaken belief it is "relatively safe".

The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs says the five-fold increase in the proportion of users since 1996 is "deeply concerning".

Its head, Prof Les Iversen, told Home Secretary Alan Johnson the drug should remain Class A and was "very harmful".

He took over as chairman after Mr Johnson sacked Professor David Nutt.

The cocaine review is one of the council's first new undertakings since Prof Iversen took over as chairman.

His letter quotes the latest British Crime Survey statistics which suggest 6.6% of 16 to 24-year-olds use cocaine, in comparison with 1.3% in 1996.

Use among those aged 16 to 59 increased from 0.6% to 3% during the same period.

"Cocaine is a very harmful drug to individuals and more broadly society, and evidence of the continued increasing prevalence of cocaine use is deeply concerning," Professor Iversen wrote.

The average purity of seized cocaine had been steadily falling to 15.5% between April and June 2009, he said.

This had "possible implications for harms to users due to an increase in the volume of cutting agents which may be present in a sample".

On Monday, a National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse report suggested some 3,000 people aged 18 to 24 sought treatment for cocaine addiction last year - a third of all those in England. Another 745 users were under the age of 18.

Professor Iversen added that it was an "increasingly common misapprehension that cocaine is a relatively safe drug".

Recovered cocaine addict Tom Kirkwood, chief executive of addict help service TTP Counselling, said the drug was being used across society.

"From guys who work on construction sites, dinner parties to folks down the pub," he said.

He said it had been "far, far too easily available", and added that policing of cocaine supply had been weak.

On Wednesday, the Commons Home Affairs Committee is expected to criticise law enforcement agencies for not doing enough to stop the supply of cocaine into Britain.

The advisory council's cocaine review is expected to take about a year and will begin after it reports on "legal highs" such as mephedrone, which have been causing increasing concern.

The home secretary said he had to remove Professor Nutt because he had been "lobbying" to change government policy after ministers reclassified cannabis as Class B against his advice.

Professor Nutt has since set up a rival panel, with four other former advisory council members who resigned in protest at his sacking.

Sinead O’Connor Rails Against Catholic Church: Burn it Down

March 6, 2010

(ChattahBox)—Outspoken Irish singer Sinead O’Connor once furiously tore up a photo of the late Pope John Paul II during an appearance on Saturday Night Live. And her relationship with the Catholic Church has only gone downhill since. The recent release of the Murphy Commission Report detailing decades of sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests in Ireland, which the Vatican covered up, has sent shock waves throughout the Dublin archdiocese. And Denis Brennan, Catholic Bishop of Ferns, decided to ask parishioners to contribute towards the cost of millions dollars of settlements the church was forced to pay to the victims of clerical abuse, by declaring it was their Christian responsibility. Sinead O’Connor was outraged by his request for money from the same families who were victimized. And she wrote a scathing open letter to several Irish newspapers condemning Bishop Brennan and the entire Catholic Church, saying his request was “evil.” She also said the Vatican should be burned to the ground.

Bishop Brennan caused a furor in Dublin when he insisted that parishioners had a Christian duty to pay for the costs of victims’ lawsuits. “That ‘I did not cause the problem’ is not the response of the Christian,” Bishop Brennan said. “That I would like to help in the work of justice, healing, reconciliation, a safer environment for children, proper financial stewardship and overall good economic health is the response of the Christian.”

O’Connor’s letter said that the “church should pay its own bills for its own abuse with its own billions that it throttled from our grandparents, whom it also abused, physically, emotionally, psychologically and sexually.” And she condemned both the Catholic Church and Brennan, as evil:

“The statement and its attempted manipulation of good Catholic people could be described as unbelievable and stupid. But in my opinion, the only word that does it justice is ‘evil’. How long do they expect us to restrain ourselves? We have put up with this bull dung for hundreds of years.”

O’Connor ended her rant by saying that Jesus would not approve of today’s Catholic Church and she would gladly help him destroy it:

“From the Pope on down, through the Vatican and therefore through the lower echelons, the whole organisation, in my belief, is utterly anti-Christian and evil, as proven by centuries of torture, bloodshed, burnings, terrorism, and coverings-up of “the worst crime” known to man. And if Jesus Christ is to be seen in the vulnerable of this world, then all the church has done is crucify the man over and over and over again. If Christ was here, he would be burning down the Vatican. And I for one would be helping him.”

Every last one of them from every religion including the ones you've never heard of ? I think politicians are overall more scumlike scum - everyone hates institutional hypocrisy - & surely that's what the point is ?

But you really are a cunt. Im not crying into my tea or anything. Nor am I frowning in some sort of mock outrage and I can picture you now in your untidy bedsit wanking off at my response.

But you are a sad cunt.

Oh and i know your not arsed what I think. So sound, well done.

Maybe you find the reaction funny or its the fact that you all like a 'newbie' getting riled. But honestly I'm not. He and anyone else who thinks its funny are cunts. Fact (and that goes for the other subjects mentioned above by the way).
