Hi guys. I'm going on a holiday to Melbourne in a few months (probably by myself) and I was wondering what kinds of activities you'd recommend. I've only been there once before, and I didn't even really do anything and I thought it was a great city! I'll be there for about 4 days, what would you recommend doing? I really want to go clubbing but I have absolutely no idea what clubs are good (or where they are! I love that Melbourne has so many hidden places!)
tl;dr You're in Melbourne for 4 days. WHAT DO YOU DO?!

Just wonder the streets and enjoy the coffee bro and talk to all the hipsters and 'cool' people.

Attend a game of cricket or afl at the best stadium in the southern hemisphere.

I always find it really hard to suggest things for people to do in Melbourne despite living here most of my life. I'm not really up on the sort of 'touristy' activities that are available, but I'll try and give you some ideas.

The botanic gardens in the city are really beautiful, and during the warmer months it's a great spot to sit with friends.

There's several different suburbs of the city with really cool and unique atmospheres, depending on what you like. St Kilda is a beachfront suburb with bars/clubs, might be worth a look, I personally prefer South or Port Melbourne beaches, and Clarendon St in Sth Melbourne is a lively shopping strip with bars/shops all the way upto the casino.

Brunswick or Fitzroy have your student, hipster sort of vibe, with an eclectic selection of shops and plenty of bars/clubs often with a less mainstream focus.

Of course, I also have to recommend Footscray, particularly for the range of exotic restaurants - mainly Asian and African.

If you're able to travel a bit, up near Belgrave is close to some national parks, gardens and forests. I love the rhododendron gardens nearby in Olinda, but it depends what kind of thing you enjoy doing. These little towns/suburbs can also be very interesting, with lots of coffee and devonshire tea shops, antiques, and natural/organic/spiritual type shops.

As others have mentioned street art is really big here, Hosier Lane in the city is one well known street for it and I think there's still a street art gallery there - but in Melbourne, you can walk down any laneway and see some amazing art, or take any train to the end of the line to check out the pieces on the way. The Hurstbridge line is my favourite for graffiti.

As for clubs, Melbourne has a really awesome nightlife. It depends on what kind of thing you're looking for, and what your musical tastes are. Apart from the city, other areas for clubs are Chapel St in Prahran, Glenferrie Rd in Hawthorn, St Kilda or Fitzroy. I'd recommend checking out Cherry Bar for 'maximum rock n' roll', it's on AC/DC lane in the city - which incidentally was renamed because of Cherry Bar. Revolver on Chapel St is trashy and fun and pretty much a Melbourne institution, it used to stay open from Friday night til Sunday night non stop, though I don't know if it still does. My Aeon on Sydney Rd Brunswick often has some mad psy trance nights/mornings. There's also hard trance clubs, metal clubs, live music venues, quiet little bars and mainstream house/rnb clubs with strict dress codes and you go to be seen. The casino might be worth a look if you like a gamble, or even if not, it's also just a big complex with high end shops, clubs, and restaurants.

It'd be easier to recommend some specific clubs/bars, and other possible activities if you give some idea of what you're into :)

The botanic gardens in the city are really beautiful, and during the warmer months it's a great spot to sit with friends.

Yeah the ones in Syd are awesome too.

Check out Federation Square - ACMI is amazing, and well worth looking around.
The Zoo is awesome, if you're into that. ;)
Just wandering the CBD can be great fun - and you have the added bonus of being able to hop on a tram if your feet get too tired, or you have too many shopping bags.
Lygon Street is brilliant for Italian food - the staff will actively try to lure you in with free wine, bargain with them!
You also can't go wrong with a wander along Southbank and checking out Crown Casino.

There's plenty to do, it just depends on what you're after. :)

Get yourself lost in the many laneways in the city - Degraves Lane is fantastic; awesome cafes/restaurants and some brilliant art. It takes you through to a great little arcade as well (degraves takes you through Flinders St/Flinders Lane to Collins St). If you like interesting buildings, check out the foyer of 333 Collins St, by far my favourite interior of a building in the CBD. There is a shop on the corner of Lonsdale and Queen Street called Wunderkammer. It describes itself as "Both a retail store and scientific and natural history museum specialising in medical and scientific instruments, natural history specimens and models." The shop is amazing and worth a look in if you're interested in that kind of thing.

As child of the beat mentioned, Lygon Street is great - my favourite restaurant is Brunetti - it's around the corner from Nova Cinema on Lygon St. It's an iconic place in Melbourne - packed with authentic Italian cakes and biscuits, gelati and delicious savoury meals - lasagne, cannelloni, etc.

There really is something for everyone in ye olde melbourne towne, it's a wonderful city. I lived there for a few years, up until late last year, and while i felt i made a very good effort in 'being a tourist in the city i live in', i didn't even put a dent in it!

Have a good time! :D

One word: REVOLVER

(It's a nightclub on Chapel St, open all weekend and constantly packed. Great vibe. Heaps of drugs).

The National Art Gallery on St. Kilda Road, only 500m or so from the main city train station (Flinders St. Station) is EXCELLENT, especially featuring a lot of colonial Australian art from McCubbin and others, and some post modern works by some very famous artists. Definitely worth a look - and its free! apart from the special exhibits.

The St. Kilda and Queen Victoria Markets are pretty good, lots of quirky independent artists on show and bargains to be had. Queen Vic is huge and sells everything. And easy to get to, based in the city.

If you are into SCUBA diving, we have some EXCELLENT shore dives only an hour or so drive from the city, most specifically the dive underneath Mornington Peir - absolutely magic, a really atmospheric dive with HEAPS of fish life and fallen timber from the old peirs that have been there over the years. and there is a dive shop up the road from the dive site where you can hire full kit for a good price. Its a better and prettier dive spot that most of the boat dives i've done!! Plus it never has much surge or current, vis normally reasonable, and you can park right next to the entry point.

If you like shopping, check out the DFO at South Wharf - many a bargain to be had.

If you like clubbing, as previously said, Chapel Street, the CBD, St. Kilda, and various other spots have good varied nightlife, with everything from chilled out lounge bars through to fluff and phat pants. I like the CBD, tonnes of venues to choose from. If you are gay or gay friendly then Commercial Road in Prahran has a number of gay clubs that are popular and get good ratings. You can buy these decks of nightclub cards from 7/11's and petrol stations, each card has a club or bar on it, they are only about $5 or $10 and might be a good guide to our nightlife. I know for a fact that The Magshop on Elizabeth Street (the Flinders St end) sells them.

The public transport is pretty good, trains and trams run til about 1am and there are a couple of all night buses. Buses in the outer suburbs.

Dunno why you would but Southland and Chadstone are the two biggest shopping centres. But i hope you are doing more interesting things than going to shopping malls.

As previously mentioned the zoo is pretty cool, if you like zoos, and the botanical gardens are worth a look too. If you like Asian food we have some AMAZING restaraunts in Little Bourke Streert (China Town). The Shark Fin Inn does an AMAZING Yum Cha, be sure to book as it is sold out most lunchtimes. The food in Melbourne is generally very good.

Hope that helps

Go to Argy Bargy on Carlisle st & play duck hunt on nintendo and buy tallies from the bar.

Jump on a tram up chapel st until you hit Victoria St & get the best & cheapest Pho in Melbourne in Richmond.

I took a friend from Germany to a few places just to show her Melbourne a lil. we went and had pizza the 1st night in some small Richmond pizza shop lol. 2nd time I was better prepared took her to Queen Vic Market which sells pretty much everything then we took a tram to St.Kilda's Luna Park and then for short walk on St.Kilda beach. It's been almost 10 years since I use to live in the city we use to go to a club where my friend played called the Velvot lounge. Would love to know if it is still running if anyone knows. last few clubs I went to were good fun. But I love letting lose in the middle of up em self city clubbers and going spastic.

If you're into clubbing pick up a beat mag, they're free and found in clothes shops like dangerfield, cafes ect - you'll see one somewhere. It'll tell you what's on and includes all genres of music.

Recently moved into Melbourne after over 8-10 years of moving and working around Australia, my place needs some brightening up, looking for some quirky/trippy art works to put on my empty walls in my pad...where you guys would go to find bargain artworks by students/eccentric artists without blowing your wallet up too much?
