The Problem With Calling Trump a Racist

the-problem-with-calling-donald-trump-a-racist-660937b5-fdd0-4be8-bd69-265e91ac00a9.jpg

By focusing on the president's racism ? and disregarding his greed ? Democrats risk casting the president as a false prophet for white Americans.

Last week, several major news outlets validated a sentiment long-held by many Americans when they announced, finally, that Trump is racist. The admission marks the end of the gas lighting Americans of color (and our like-minded allies) have experienced since the start of his campaign. But although this feels like progress, the new headlines feed into an old and dangerous narrative that has persisted since before the 2016 election: namely, that highlighting Trump's racism is a strategic boon.

The view that a racial lens is the best way to see and understand the Trump phenomenon is popular among many of the country?s most esteemed thinkers. Ta-Nehisi Coates has emphasized what he perceives to be Trump?s unique exploitation of race by dubbing him our ?First White President.? More recently, Charles Blow characterized Trump as ?The Lowest White Man? in a piece for the New York Times ? focusing on how the gap between Trump?s inadequacy and Obama?s exceptionalism evinces a society that demands more from those to whom less is given, while casting the successes of a rich kid like Trump as proof of the power of meritocracy.

Quite an interesting article, well worth a read.

The problem with these fake news style opinion pieces is they cast aspersions with zero evidence or proof. Even the acclaimed speech about some illegals coming across the border being rapists, wasn’t proof he is racist, when read in context.. The fact that he went 69 years of his life never having this claim held against him, says a whole heck of a lot more. Also he’s lost great personal wealth since taking on the task of fixing America’s problems. To think we could finally unite Korea, confirms that ‘strategic patience’ is the ploy of a weak leader.

The problem with calling Trump a racist = he isn't racist

More minority votes than Romney

Blacks are benefiting from trumps policies more than any other group. You can tell the media is trying to keep them in line, but even the head of BET was giving him credit/ coming around to him. He’s the first real leader we have had in decades and people are starting to come around bc the results speak for them self. Also rolling stone should stick to music, they would probably alienate less people and have more readers.

Number of minority votes doesn't prove anything. I don't know if Trump is a racist or not, he certainly ran on Islamophobia/Mexicanophobia/xenophobia in general (as one among several big issues anyway) but he may very well have been pandering.

fact?

you're just conveniently ignoring the 1973 racial discrimination case. last year, the fbi released documents associated with the case. those documents include an interview with a doorman at a trump building in brooklyn:

A supervisor "told me that if a black person came to 2650 Ocean Parkway and inquired about an apartment for rent, and he, that is [redacted] was not there at the time, that I should tell him that the rent was twice as much as it really was, in order that he could not afford the apartment," the ex-doorman said.

trump ("i never, ever, ever settle lawsuits") settled the case in 1975 and the settlement required the trump company to institute a series of safeguards to make sure apartments were rented without regard to race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

you'll blow this off, droppers but it's posted here for others reading.

^Trump sued the government for defamation. If you check the FBI files they went to the building to interview tenants, who claimed they did not experience any racism (one of the interviewed tenants being a black woman).

Also:
EDITOR?S NOTE: Nearly twenty years before he decided to run for president of the United States, Donald Trump created a huge stir of a different kind in Palm Beach. Back in those days, the rich elites who ran the town wouldn?t allow Jews and blacks to use the golf and country club facilities. When he bought Mar-a-lago, he went to court to end that discrimination, won in court and forever changed how minorities are treated in Palm Beach. That?s the real Donald Trump.

^ if there was nothing to it, why did the man who never, ever, ever settles a lawsuit settle and agree to implement safeguards against racial discrimination? we'll never know.

^Trump sued the government for defamation.
a federal judge threw out that countersuit, calling it a waste of "time and paper".

^He had a fanboy moment with Generals: McMaster (who is gone), Kelly (who is beleaguered), and Mattis (who is dealing with Syria and Wall Funding that Won't Happen and Transgenders serving in the military nonsense).

I don't think they are v wealthy. I could be wrong...plunder?

I just want to be inclusive. :)

I am not a Trump fan however I wont call him a racist.

Because I actually dont think he is.

He has a very poor public speaking ability. He is ignorant about other countries that are not America.

He isnt racist, he does appear that way due to his woeful persona.

He has tried to ban all muslims due to terrorism concerns. Thats more a religion issue, but regardless it seems racist yeah? Its just very reactionary, useless and neducated. Same as thousands and thousands of people all over the world. Maybe he hasnt actually spent any time with muslim people and is just feeding on whats been told to him.

Jewish interviewers have stated no Jew they know think he is antisemite. He isnt.

Is he racist against African Americans? Well, I am so confused as to that situation in America, it seems to me everyone is anyway so is he more racist than the average white American? Who knows?

Thats for Americans to decide. I dont see the difference from over here. A yank is a yank and I like the yanks really. Sometimes you piss me off but who cares.

Hes not any more racist than the average person.

Theres racism globally. Every race and culture has a racist population. Its just the way humans are.

Im not saying its okay, Im not going to pretend Im not guilty of racist thoughts either. I have them no doubt. But my thoughts fo not translate into words or actions. Thats all.

I'm not going to catalog all the racist things Trump has done, but in terms of being anti-Semitic, it really doesn't get more anti-Semitic than Trump's seeming inability to condemn the Charlottesville white supremacists.

The white supremacist groups sported Nazi symbolism and obviously the swastika isn't a symbol Jews are okay with in any way.

Gary Cohn, Trump's former leading advisor and head of the National Economic Council, almost quit over the incident. (He's a Jew.)

It's so easy to forget in all the news, but Trump made multiple statements about Charlottesville, one of which he read. His final unprepared remarks contained the "good people on both sides" remark.

If a person is willing to espouse those views in international news coverage, if you're willing to throw Jews and blacks under the bus, then I'm willing to call that person a racist.

(Yes I'm aware Judaism can be considered a religion, ethnicity and probably something else.)

^ Trump moved the embassy to Jerusalem which previous presidents refused to do, and he married off his daughter to a Jew. Pretty sure he's cool with them.
The thing about Charlottesville was that some people (who originally thought they were attending a peaceful rally for the Right) ended up involved in a rally (or a trap according to some) that was co-opted by some NeoNazis.

Zephyr fair comment but
He has tried to ban all muslims due to terrorism concerns.
When did he do this?
Obama compiled a list of 7 countries that were the biggest threats to the US regarding terrorism. Vetting procedures for immigrants from those countries were arguably not tight enough. Trump placed a temporary restriction on visas from these countries until the vetting issues could be sorted. It wasn't a ban, and there were many other Muslim-majority countries that were not on that list, so not all Muslims were temporarily restricted. Obama also issued the exact same type of "ban" on Iraqis for 6 months.

Is he racist against African Americans? Well, I am so confused as to that situation in America, it seems to me everyone is anyway so is he more racist than the average white American? Who know?
Since Trump came in 2 million+ jobs have been created and black unemployment is at its lowest levels ever recorded (Hispanic unemployment not far behind). If he doesn't like black people then he has a terrible way of showing it.

It's not racist to state that some country has a problem with terrorism, gangs or illegal immigration.

He is ignorant about other countries that are not America.
Look at the reception he received in China & Saudi Arabia for eg. Contrast those with Obama's. At least Trump knows he shouldn't be bowing to other world leaders if he wants to command respect for the USA. His current trade negotiations with China are proving to be effective, time will tell on that one. But Trump has businesses around the world so he definitely knows at least a little bit. Then there's the NK de-escalation which is happening under his watch whether one chooses to give him any credit or not.

Mate cut me some slack jack a cask a daybreak mate and here I am crapping on in CEP

The election campaign highlight reel had him crapping on about banning muslim immigrants.

I digress, only from certain countries.

Which to be honest is like banning all Israelites just in case they decide to annex Manhattan as a new zion

Or some crap like that.

On what date was the embassy moved to Jerusalem?

"he married off his daughter to a Jew"
Wait what year is this?
And it's awesome that anti-Semitism is so straightforward.

I'm not replying to the Trump spew, except to add that nothing is done until it's done.

It will happen in phases beginning in May (JPost)

Ivanka married Kushner in 2009 if that's what you're asking.
Or do you mean Jew is a slur? I don't think it is maybe depending on the tone but not the word itself.
Heard plenty of Jewish persons refer to themselves as Jews.
