US Politics The Mueller Investigation - report is out

Crimea was originally Russia, the land was given to Ukraine. Most of the population are ethnically Russian.

And... so what? Texas used to be part of Mexico, but that doesn't mean Mexico has the right to take it back. And if Texans held some BS "referendum" and voted to join Mexico, it would be illegitimate and wouldn't have any legal effect. Texas would still belong to the United States, not Mexico.

For the record, Crimea was not "originally Russia." The Crimean peninsula was originally a collection of greek colonies established around the 5th century BCE, and it has been ruled by many different groups since then. It was annexed by Russia in the late 1700's when Catherine the Great defeated the Ottoman Empire. Later, in the 20th century, the Russian Soviet Socialist Republic transferred ownership of Crimea (with the exception of the naval installation at Sevastopol) to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

That means that Crimea is the rightful property of Ukraine, not Russia. There's exactly zero grey area there: Crimea is not the property of Russia. It is the property of Ukraine and Russia illegally stole it.

Papadopoulos sentenced to 14 DAYS in jail for lying to FBI in Mueller probe :sus:

WASHINGTON ? The man whose boozy conversation with a diplomat may have launched the federal government's investigation into Russian election interference was sentenced Friday to 14 days in jail and one year of supervised release for lying to the FBI.

The defendant, George Papadopoulos, a one-time up-and-comer from Chicago who served as a foreign policy adviser on Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, pleaded guilty last October to making a false statement when the FBI interviewed him in January 2017.

Nice job Mueller! Collusion confirmed! Wait...

That 'diplomat' was Alexander Downer. I suspect he's going to have a bit to answer for himself soon.

So everyone cares about Crimea, but nobody cares about the coup in Ukraine that put actual Neo-Nazis in power. I thought we hated Nazis? Ignorance/propaganda.

Don't covertly overthrow regimes and you won't experience military counterbalance measures from your target.

That term gets thrown around a lot, and it's rarely applied correctly, don't you think?

I'm dead curious to see how this unfolds.

Same. Downer (and a quite few other prominent aussie politicians) are up to their eyeballs in swamp goo, with the Clinton Foundation and others. Julia Gillard was shilling hard for Clinton in US print media during the election, and it was under Gillard that all those tax dollars were mismanaged by the Foundation and Ranbaxxy (and presumably pocketed by anyone involved). When Trump won unexpectedly, Aussie govt donations to the Clinton Foundation immediately stopped

HeraldSun said:
"[Former Prime Minister Julia] Gillard also donated $300 million of our money to the Clinton-affiliated Global Partnership for Education," Australian newspaper the Herald Sun wrote in an October article titled, "Why have we donated to Clinton's foundation?"

Trump winning caused serious alarm as he now has the power to blow all this open if he wanted to. That's why Downer had to stick his nose in it and tip off the FBI after his drunk convo with Papadopolous, and Christopher Steele put his ass on the line with the dodgy dossier. So really there is Australian and British interference in the US election but we're all part of the Five Eyes which allows all the countries to spy on each other.

That term gets thrown around a lot, and it's rarely applied correctly, don't you think?

Exactly and that's why it pisses me off so much. I'm talking about literal Nazis taking over a government in a western-backed coup and nobody knows or they don't care/believe it. Yet they're chasing phantom Nazis back in the suburbs of the West.

GOP official: Strzok and Page conspired to unleash a ?media leak strategy?
https://nypost.com/2018/09/10/gop-o...nspired-to-unleash-a-media-leak-strategy/amp/

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC), a member of the House Oversight & Government Reform Committee, made those allegations in a letter to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who is overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller?s probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

?Review of these new documents raises grave concerns regarding an apparent systemic culture of media leaking by high-ranking officials at the FBI and DOJ related to ongoing investigations,? Meadows wrote.

Meadows claims his committee uncovered an April 10, 2017, text from Strzok to Page in Justice Department documents saying: "I had literally just gone to find this phone to tell you I want to talk to you about media leak strategy with DOJ before you go."

Then two days later, Meadows said, Strzok congratulated Page ? texting "Well done, Page" - for allegedly planting stories that reflected poorly on Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

Meadows suggested that an April, 11, 2017, story in The Washington Post - reporting that the FBI obtained a secret court order to monitor Carter Page?s communications ? came from Strzok and Page.

"While these two text messages alone are troubling enough, events surrounding these interactions call the motives of the investigative team into question," Meadows wrote to Rosenstein.

Strzok was once one of the top FBI agents on Mueller?s team before it was discovered that he had sent texts that disparaged Trump. He was removed from the Russia probe and fired last month.

This thread should probably be changed to FBI Corruption Scandal

BREAKING: Page and Strzok Texts Reveal They Discussed Writing a “Folksy” Op-ed on Russia
https://saraacarter.com/breaking-pa...y-discussed-writing-a-folksy-op-ed-on-russia/

A number of new text messages reveal that two former FBI lovers appeared to have close communication with members of the media and attempted to frame arguments about Russian interference several months before the 2016 presidential election, according to text messages obtained by SaraACarter.com. The revelations raise “serious concerns” with lawmakers, who question the pairs motives, as well as the bureau’s investigation into alleged collusion between Russia and President Donald Trump’s campaign.

Former FBI Special Agent Peter Strzok and his paramour former FBI attorney Lisa Page exchanged text messages several months before the 2016 election that suggest the pair were writing an op-ed together and that the FBI seemingly “authorized” a Washington Post story on potential Russian interference during the November elections.

On Sept. 2, 2016, Page texts Strzok about writing an op-ed: “Got it. But we are still writing the op-ed, yes?”

Strzok replies, “Yes, ish. He said too much data would be good to identify the key pieces of data and frame it in an argument, but not to spend ‘too much time on the opening or closing.’ I told him we were too much of perfectionists to not do all of it.”

On September 5, 2016, Page sends Strzok a link to the Washington Post article titled, U.S. investigating potential covert Russian plan to disrupt November elections.

Strzok replies, “This is the one (redacted) was talking about I think.”

Page then says, “Yup. It is very well sourced. 100% authorized.”

Strzok then tells Page, “Just read the article. We say a lot of the same things. I guess that’s O.K.”

Page writes back “Yeah, but that’s why ours is going to need to be more folksy. So it’s not like a news article.”

The Washington Post story refers to the Harry Reid briefing, stating, “After Senate Minority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-NV) ended a secure 30-minute phone briefing given by a top intelligence official recently, he was “deeply shaken,” according to an aide who was with Reid when he left the secure room at the FBI’s Las Vegas office.”

Strzok also suggested in a text to Page on the same day, “I have really no faith the administration will deal with it effectively,” regarding the administration officials cited in the story that said they were still weighing their response to Russia.

However, the texts between the two do not disclose what article they were writing, or for whom they were writing the opinion piece, or if it was ever published. Congressional officials say the onslaught of text messages between the two reveal troubling signs that the FBI was running a partisan and biased investigation.

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) with the the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said the onslaught of text messages referring to the media and suggesting possible leaks by the FBI regarding ongoing investigations needs to be addressed by the Department of Justice.

This is gonna drip drip drip until midterms probably...

George Papadopoulos Hammers Clinton-Tied Aussie Diplomat in Tweetstorm: "I Hope Alexander Downer is Exposed"

Former Trump campaign volunteer George Papadopoulos was sentenced on Friday to 14 days in prison after being set up by the Obama Deep State in the 2016 election.

George Papadopoulos went on CNN and ABC this weekend to discuss his role in the Spygate scandal.

Papadopoulos told the liberal anchors about how he was set up by Obama spy Stephan Halper in London after he was brought on by the Trump campaign.

He went after Clinton friend Alexander Downer who also set him up and spread lies about their brief meeting in a tweetstorm early Monday.

Papadopoulos tweeted out on Monday that Downer sought him out and they NEVER ONCE spoke about Russian emails.

Aussie diplomat, Alexander Downer and deep state spy Stephan Halper are longtime acquaintances.

Papadopoulos continued his tweetstorm into late Monday evening, slamming the Deep State who set him up and called for Alexander Downer to be exposed.

Papadopoulos said:
The notion that Downer randomly reached out to me just to have a gin and tonic is laughable. Some organization or entity sent him to meet me. For the sake of our republic and the integrity of this investigation, I think it's time Downer is as exposed as Christoper Steele.

Papadopoulos said:
Would be a very very big problem if British intelligence was weopanized against an American citizen.

Papadopoulos said:
I love the USA and the brave men and women of the FBI that risk their lives to protect us. I made the mistake to lie to them for wish I am ashamed. On the other hand, I did notify them that I thought Downer was recording me with his phone. I hope that was investigated.

Federal prosecutors weigh charges against Democratic powerbroker in Manafort-linked probe
https://edition.cnn.com/2018/09/14/...n-agent-registration-investigation/index.html

Federal prosecutors in New York are weighing criminal charges against former Obama White House counsel Greg Craig as part of an investigation into whether he failed to register as a foreign agent in a probe that is linked to former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Hey - he's ratting on the wrong guy!

This is a really good article if you want to understand the FISA issue.

Coz some shit gon get declassified real soon, just before midterms *popcorn*

In the Russia Probe, It’s ‘Qui S’excuse S’accuse’
https://www.nationalreview.com/2018/09/trump-russia-probe-fbi-fisa-application/

Will this be the week? With bated breath, we wait to find out whether we’ve reached the moment, after the Labor Day end of summer, just as the critical midterm races heat up, when President Trump will follow through on his threat to declassify and publicize key FISA-gate documents — in particular, the redacted portions of the Carter Page surveillance-warrant applications.

I hope the president follows through, at least to the extent he can do so without putting intelligence methods and sources at risk. Accountability is essential here.

The FBI and the Obama Justice Department launched an investigation of the Democrats’ political adversaries, and they used Clinton-campaign-generated, foreign-provided innuendo to do it. They strained to make a case on Donald Trump even as they were burying a daunting criminal case on Mrs. Clinton. As I have previously explained, moreover, the president was misled about his status: not only was he a suspect in the investigation, he was the main suspect.

The main suspect in an investigation with no crime.

Lisa Page testimony - NO EVIDENCE OF COLLUSION BEFORE MUELLER APPOINTMENT

Lisa Page bombshell: FBI couldn't prove Trump-Russia collusion before Mueller appointment
https://thehill.com/hilltv/rising/4...t-prove-trump-russia-collusion-before-mueller

"It's a reflection of us still not knowing," Page told Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas) when questioned about texts she and Strzok exchanged in May 2017 as Robert Mueller was being named special counsel to take over the Russia investigation.

With that statement, Page acknowledged a momentous fact: After nine months of using some of the most awesome surveillance powers afforded to U.S. intelligence, the FBI still had not made a case connecting Trump or his campaign to Russia's election meddling.

Page opined further, acknowledging "it still existed in the scope of possibility that there would be literally nothing" to connect Trump and Russia, no matter what Mueller or the FBI did.

"As far as May of 2017, we still couldn't answer the question," she said at another point.

Dems are FREAKING OUT right now upon the threat of declassifying the FISA warrant - however this thread stays quiet..

BREAKING: President Trump directs DOJ to public release "all text messages relating to the Russia investigation, without redaction, of James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Peter Strzok, Lisa Page, and Bruce Ohr" as well as declassify other material related to the Russian investigation.

Here comes the pain..

Trump's attempting to obstruct justice again.

It's hard to believe that anyone could think it was ok for a president to sabotage an investigation into his own campaign.

Can you imagine the moronic outrage from trumpers if "crooked hillary" did the same thing? /puke

Serious question: do you understand the details of this investigation?
Do you know what a FISA application is?

EXECUTIVE ORDER 13526. SECTION 1.7 IN NO CASE SHALL INFORMATION BE CLASSIFIED, CONTINUE TO BE MAINTAINED AS CLASSIFIED, OR FAIL TO BE DECLASSIFIED IN ORDER TO CONCEAL VIOLATIONS OF LAW.SIGNED DECEMBER 29, 2009, BY PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA

Sooo....there's a few Democrats who are trying to prevent the declassification of the FISA. They want to keep some stuff redacted. Trump wants full disclosure. I think they want to keep it "classified" because they're GUILTY

Awesome. What do you think about all this?

Meanwhile, in less hysterical news...

A decent summary about the Mueller investigation and unsurprisingly Trump admitted that he didn't read the "bombshell" documents:

AP Explains: Mueller?s legal actions not overlooked by Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Robert Mueller has been busy.

In just the last two weeks, the special counsel has secured the cooperation of President Donald Trump?s former campaign chairman, dispensed with the case of the campaign aide who triggered the Russia probe and signaled he?s squeezed all the information he needs out of former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

All that activity has not gone unnoticed by Trump.

The president has continued to wage a public-relations war on Mueller, casting his investigation into Russian election interference and possible coordination with Trump associates as a politically motivated witch hunt. In his latest move, Trump is again using his executive power to declassify documents in the Russia probe that he says build a case that the investigation was tainted from the start by bias in the Justice Department and FBI.

And in an interview with The Hill , Trump said he hopes his effort to root out what he sees as corruption in the FBI and Justice Department will go down as one of his ?crowning achievements,? a move he likened to exposing ?something that is truly a cancer in our country.?

Here?s where things stand:
___
DECLASSIFYING RUSSIA DOCUMENTS

Urged on by a small group of House Republicans, the president on Monday ordered the public release of any Russia investigation-related text messages of several FBI and Justice Department officials, including former FBI Director James Comey and former acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe. He also declassified a portion of materials used to obtain a secret warrant to monitor the communication of former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser Carter Page.

Trump, who told The Hill he hasn?t read the documents he?s declassifying, said Tuesday he made the decision because he wants ?total transparency.?

Trump and his allies believe the documents will show improprieties during the early days of the Russia investigation. They say the 21 pages show top Justice Department officials abusing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act process, particularly through the use of information gathered by former British spy Christopher Steele. His Democrat-funded research into Trump ties to Russia was included in the FISA applications and later compiled into a dossier that was published in January 2017.

FISA applications and warrants are some of the most secret documents in the government. The warrants are supposed to be used to gather intelligence on people suspected of being agents of a foreign power.

Democrats and some former national security officials have criticized the declassification move, saying it could jeopardize intelligence-gathering sources and methods. They also say the president is abusing his power to serve his own interests.

It?s unclear when the documents will become public.

----
MANAFORT FLIPS

Paul Manafort held out through multiple indictments, months in jail and even a conviction on eight criminal counts ? all until last week.

On Friday, the man who led Trump?s campaign for several crucial months pleaded guilty to two more felony charges and agreed to cooperate ?fully, truthfully, completely and forthrightly.? Manafort?s deal came as he was facing a second trial that was to explore his efforts to secretly lobby in the U.S. for Ukrainian interests and to conceal the millions of dollars he funneled through offshore accounts as part of that work.

The focus now turns to what he knows.

Manafort, an eyewitness to a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower with a Russian lawyer, could detail the actions of Trump?s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and Trump?s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., who was told in emails that it was part of a Russian government effort to help his father?s campaign.

Manafort also headed the campaign while, court papers say, the Russian government was actively trying to influence the election. And his ties to prominent Russian and Ukrainian businessmen also offer prosecutors a wealth of information they can use for not only the Russia probe but also potentially other investigations.

That includes continued government scrutiny of law firms and Washington lobbying shops, such as Skadden Arps, Mercury Public Affairs and the now-defunct Podesta Group, which took part in Manafort?s unregistered lobbying work.

With Manafort?s deal, Mueller has now secured six guilty pleas and a trial conviction and has pending indictments against three companies and 26 individuals including 12 Russian intelligence officers. Two other investigations that Mueller referred to other U.S. attorneys have also resulted in guilty pleas. That includes a probe of longtime Trump fixer Michael Cohen.
___
JAIL TIME FOR PAPADOPOULOS

While Manafort is just beginning his cooperation, former Trump foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos wrapped up his.

And prosecutors weren?t too happy with him. They recommended jail time because he didn?t provide ?substantial assistance? and only begrudgingly helped them after his 2017 arrest. They also argued that Papadopoulos? lies during the early days of the FBI?s Russia investigation irreparably damaged it.

Those false statements involved Papadopoulos? contacts with Russian intermediaries during the 2016 campaign.

Before Russian hacking of Democratic organizations became public, one of the intermediaries, a Maltese professor, told Papadopoulos that the Russians had ?dirt? on Democrat Hillary Clinton in the form of thousands of emails. But when FBI agents confronted him in January 2017, Papadopoulos lied, and, prosecutors say, that deception resulted in them missing an opportunity to interview professor Joseph Mifsud while he was in the U.S. He hasn?t returned since.

A federal judge ultimately sentenced Papadopoulos , whose Russian contacts triggered the Russia probe, to 14 days? incarceration.
___
DONE WITH FLYNN?

After months of delay, Mueller?s team says they?re ready for a judge to sentence Trump?s first national security adviser as early as Nov. 28.

Flynn, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant general and a senior Trump campaign surrogate, has been waiting for the government?s signoff since he pleaded guilty in December 2017 to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russian officials during the presidential transition.

Flynn has been seen as a key cooperator in Mueller?s investigation. But prosecutors have yet to say what he shared and whether it has led to possible criminal charges against others.

And a court filing Monday suggests the public will have to wait a little longer. Prosecutors are asking a federal judge to set a schedule that would keep the specifics of Flynn?s cooperation from becoming public until after the midterm elections.
