The gun thread, reloaded.

^I said something along those lines as well:

How much crime is committed using assault weapons and how many "common men" use them as home defense weapons?

As I've said many times in the past, talk of stricter gun control and the restrictions that actually do pass are used to influence the public in one way or another. Semi-automatic rifles and shotguns purchased prior to the enactment of this law are grandfathered in. The bill really just places stricter limits on magazine specifications and requires old weapons to be registered. No sweeping gun collections here, just enough to stir up a little attention.

We're allowed to own guns that resemble firearms and shoot plastic bb's, but only if they've been painted in such macho colours as neon pink, bright orange, and fluorescent blue; get caught with an unpainted one in a public place, and you run the risk of getting exterminated by firearms cops. With extreme prejudice.

So I guess if you're a gangsta, you could paint you're AK neon pink, and you're good to go.

It kills me when people in my country take their great freedoms for granted. So sad imo

It pains me when grown adults measure one's freedom by the number of bullets they're allowed to own. I used to have a thing for guns once myself. I carried a holster with two Peacemakers, wore a cowboy hat and boots with spurs.

Then I started the first grade and got really into dinosaurs thanks to seeing Jurassic Park on the big screen.

The difference being I decided then to study the sciences, and I still am. You're never going to use your weapons against the state, droppers. This is a romantic notion, but a fantasy. Your weapons are for protection from other people with guns. It's not freedom that you're rallying behind, it's security.

I don't feel my life would be any richer or more interesting with a gun, and security is a bit of a non-issue where I am, especially regarding firearms.

But I'll be honest here: I like them. I've done some clay pigeon shooting and really loved it, and if the laws weren't so tight, it's a hobby/ pastime I would love to get into.

Edit: it's gonna be very interesting to see how 3d printed guns (when the tech matures a lot, of course) will fit into a strictly anti-gun society. how could they control something like that?

The gun control debate is hardly a productive one, and almost always ends up in partisan bickering, though there are quite a few good posts here arguing for and against gun control. It is quite clear that American gun culture is alive and well, and will remain so for the foreseeable future. So, those arguing for the banning of any and all firearms aside from the farmer's long gun are clearly only doing so for the sake of argument, and/or capitalizing on a chance to voice their opinions with a little venom.

Given the state of American gun culture, we can only hope for incremental changes in gun control in the U.S. towards restricting the body count that a mass murderer can rack up. Any changes beyond that is wishful thinking. About the only way to effectively reduce the homicide rate in the U.S. that would work in practice, would be to somehow tackle the problem of income inequality. Anything else is just a waste of time, energy, and political capital.

the anti gun people logic

what we want? ban guns
how we do it? send bunch of men with guns,to take away guns of other men "give me your evil gun or i shoot u motherfuker"

moral of the story, think whatever...but at the end of the day, if u want to take my gun away,u need gun, amen

That depends on how you use it ;)

You've also obviously never been to the US. Show up at an American mall or college campus with an AK, for instance, and you'll be mobbed by women. It's better than bringing a baby!

Right, but does it matter which government is doing it? I'm not seeing how states negating a constitutional right is alright, but the federal government negating a constitutional right is tyranny. The US constitution is to be abided by all states, not just ones that choose to. See: the US civil war.
droppersneck, care to answer the question?

alasdair

I did answer it last night but at around 2:13 am est I guess you dropped the ball b/c the site was down. I suspect it had something to do with the tenth amendment and me yelling states rights trumps all over and over again.

- Furthermore for people not from this country the NRA is a relatively small organization with vastly overstated influence/lobbying power in Washington, and is used by the gun opposition minority as a talking point. If any kind of major gun control was going to be passed it was going to be passed with the current admin. The fact that none of the elected officials want to vote in limits to the second amendment b/c they fear their constituencies says it all. What's more real the boogie man(NRA) or the will of the people..

^The NRA has very small influence on the whole of government. They're not very big players in campaign finance reform or the energy sector. However, does a larger gun lobby exist outside of the NRA? They have tremendous influence in regard to firearm legislation. Also, the 10th amendment applies to issues that aren't explicitly listed in the constitution. Which doesn't apply to the 2nd amendment.

In any case, it's a mistake to over simplify this issue. The George Bush "with us or against us" concept isn't really applicable. There is no singular "gun opposition" group. Some gun control advocates want small reforms in the purchasing process of firearms, some argue for stricter regulations on which should be legal without a permit, other argue for gun-free zones, others argue for a database of owners of certain weapons. A very small minority of gun control advocates actually want to take all of your guns away.

I say screw em all! Normally these people campaigning for it are just out on a pity party tour b/c they have nothing better to do with their time other than whine about this countries freedoms they do not like. I will agree all the gun manufacturers together are more than likely a force to be reckoned with.

How the times have changed.

Again, we'll have to agree to disagree on what constitutes "freedom".

I don't believe so. Although had he been a politician (of any party), serving prior to America's Reaganization, he would probably be considered a communist today.

Speaking of Reagan, it turns out that even champions of the small government/FREEDOM!!! facade can also favor stronger gun legislation. All it takes is for a few minorities (or Marxists in this case) to exercise their first amendment rights.

Well if you know anything about that time in which I believe you do with the temperance movements and other extreme socially conservative views anything that was looked upon to be brutish or uncivilized was generally frowned at. They were trying to get away from the wild west image of America. Also no doubt that quote could be far out of context regardless. Show me the stats on the gun crime committed by CCW permit holders lol
