The exercise, weightlifting and fitness thread vers. HMPH GRR AGHHH!!

Hmm, I'm thinking I'll go ahead and just buy them. I'll most likely go the used route. Anything I should avoid?

If youre going to get a barbell I would make sure you get a 45 lb bar, and enough plates for both lightweight and heavy weight exercises. If youre going to be investing that much already I'd make sure you have a bench for bench press (preferably one that can do both incline and decline) and squat rack for squatting. Dumbbells are also great. You can get ajustable ones that use the same lighter weights from your barbell.

Overall, barbells are probably the best, most versatile single piece of exercise equipment you can buy. Im just confused about why you want to buy one over getting a gum membership. No close Gyms? Scared of other people?

A gym offers all the freewights and barbells you could possibly want, as well as a bunch of other machines that are good for targeting specific areas. I pay 10$ a month for my gym, I get a superior workout, and it would take years of monthly payments to equal the cost of what youre about to spend on one piece of equipment.

Just sayin bro, think about it.

There's a few gyms within twenty miles of me, but I'd like to think I'd have no excuse for not working out if the gym is at my house lol. Especially since I work two jobs, one full and one part time, it's challenging finding time. I'll research the monthly dues for gyms nearby and give them consideration. Thanks entheo and Care for your help!

P.S. I'm not scared of people. I'm quite a confident woman, one who wants to build her upper body strength for self-defense purposes lol!

20 minutes....? that sucks.

On second though the home gym equipment might be the best.

How experienced are you with lifting weights? A barbell is a great tool, but like most great tools if you dont know how to use it properly it can backfire on you. Also, you shouldn't approach weightlifting with the goal of "building upper body strength" IMO. You should be looking to improve your fitnes level in every way. That includes upper body, lower body, core, cardiovascular endurance ect.

If you just buy a barbell with no experience and no one to help you then you might not get as much out of it as you could. Making sure you have proper diet, and are using proper technique with the proper exercises, with proper rest days in between is key.

Thats why I recommend a gym membership for the inexperienced. There are a lot of easy to use machines and dumbbells there to get you started, and you can emulate others to help get yourself used to all sorts of different exercises. You can also meet others who are into fitness who would probably be willing to help you out if you want. Plus if you end up deciding to flake out on your fitness goals then at least you will not have invested in expensive exercise equipment.

If you're already experienced, then you can probably ignore all of this and just go ahead, but if you just watched a cross-fit video or something and decided to buy a barbell then you will probably be better off just getting a gym membership.

Just my 2c.

I'm inexperienced lol. I agree, I should have all-around fitness in mind. I guess I originally wanted to improve my upper body strength because my calves are well-developed. You make some good points and I'll consider a gym membership more seriously. Thanks!

Been hitting the gym 4-5 times a week for 45 min sessions on the cardio machines. Just started that this year. I'm in okay shape, but certainly would benefit from losing some flab.

Continue with your noble de-flabbing efforts good sir. Your future self will thank you.

hehe thanks. These workouts also have the added benefit of mellowing me out all day. I've been sleeping much better since I've started.
