All right.. I've been reading reports about effexor lately, as i've been working on getting off for 6 months to reclaim my ability to roll... And I have seen to many reports where people speak of the electric-shock withdrawal symptom.. Thank god i'm not alone.. What is this? Does anyone else here have any experience with this? When going to long without Effexor it feels like every nerve ending in my body fires off simultaneously, every 5 seconds.. sometimes they're so strong they cause me to physically shake and make me nautious.

Any information would be appriciated.

I got those electric shock withdrawl symptoms from Effexor and let me tell you, they suck. All of a sudden you jolt up and feel like you are getting shocked in your head. Urgh. Its horrible because it happens over and over and you don't know when they are going to attack. That is my least favorite withdrawl symptom from anti-depressants AND benzodiazepines.

agreed... and the only thing in the world that would make them go away for a bit, is either taking more effexor, or some other type of anti-depressant... xanax eases it for a bit, but they'll be back

i was on 225 mg of effexor in the end, no sex drive, still felt like shit. stopped cold turkey and thank god had no ill effects at all. When i told my doctor he was amazed, he reckons effexor withdrawals are severe on most people. Anti deppressants are evil, they only allow u to function in society. Take a break from society and work for six months and work on the real problems. get through the hell and the rest is easy

shocks?

Hmm, never heard of this...

Did MDMA, cocaine, etc. during my early days... diagnosed with GAD and severe panic attacks and was given Effexor and of course Xanax... which helps incredibly... able to live life again. Kinda worried about these "shocks" though.

When I first started taking this medicine I got these shocks although for me it actually felt like I was taking a nuclear shower. No withdrawl symptoms that I know of.

it feels like the shock that jolts through your body when you snap awake from a bad dream or something... except it's steady, every few seconds.. it can be quite debilitating.. makes me not feel like trying to convey thoughts, i just want to lie around until the wave of shocks succeeds for a bit.. utter hell

Damn. Ive never heard of this before, and I was thinking about taking Effexor. How long had you guys been on it before this started?

I'm having the same symptoms from coming off Lexapro and I have been clean for a month and they still hit me. :(

I'me having to cut 37.5mg tablets into little bits, each of which gets rid of my withdrawals. I can't quite stop using it without getting these shocks. It's horrible.

i just want to understand what causes the severe "shock" sensation.. it feels like my body is under attack

In a nutshell, probably a significant loss of SERT function coupled with low to no serotonin synthesis. SSRIs (and mixed SRI/NRIs) cause SERTs to "die" in the same way that massive doses of MDMA does. SSRIs also bring the synthesis of serotonin to a near standstill. When you withdraw these drugs, especially the more rapidly eliminated drugs (like Paxil) your brain is still acting like they are there. It takes time (days, weeks, months, years?) for full serotonin function to return. If you want a smoother withdrawal switch to something with a long half-life (like Prozac) and taper off.

SSRIs for some people are probably as or more physically addicting than benzodiazepines so withdrawal from them needs to be done gradually.

omfg i thought i was the only one! dude i just taperd off them by taking 3 a day for 3 days then 2 a day for 3 days then one a day for 3 days and BAM no shocks!i recomend this method highly

i was on 300mg daily for about 3 months.. i'm finally off.. but this was my weening process...

from 300mgs daily straight to 75mg/day for 1 month
then 75mg every other day for a month to two months
then just about 10mg's or so every 3 to four days to stave off withdrawals and stop shocks for another month an a half

it took me around 6 months to fully get off of effexor...

by the way, i've been off completely for a little over a week now and i'm trying to decide whether or not it's worth it to try rolling this weekend.. i know it's only been a week since i've had an effexor, and normally people will wait longer to be on the safer side... but since i spent so much time withdrawaling, i wonder if it will be ok... eh

fucking anti-depressants, i've had these these things almost shoved down my throat by so many doctors when i go tell them im slightly depressed, but have really bad anxiety. Ohh, lets put you on effexor or lexapro, the doctor says. I read horror storys about these things, I just tell my doctor Im not taking that crap, way too many side effects I don't even wanna consider having. I had a friend who almost had a seizure coming off effexor. He had no idea what the hell was happening. All he could get out were the words "electric shock" for awhile. He was trying to stop cold turkey after 300mg a day for about 3 months. The doctors finally got him tappered off the crap in 2 months though. hmmm

I can't help but view some of these claims in a retro backlog, for me it is completely the other way around. I've taken a 25mg amitriptyline BTW.

Why wouldn't someone taper off of Effexor?

And if you're on Effexor long enough, the "safe" way to taper takes about 6 months to be fully free of Effexor.
