Wrong ... Trader Joes does have a full line of groceries... I don't shop there but it has fresh meats, produce, dairy products and everything a grocery store normally carries.

Understood. So it's a shop that sells foodstuffs. But not one you would particularly recommend?

It's a fairly large grocery store.

Trader Joe's

My wife works at a Jewel so we shop where she works because we get a discount, that's all.

Where do you get your information, do you just make stuff up?
No I've never been to trader joes but anytime someone has told me they went they only have premade stuff

I don't know what Jewel is. I presume a competitor to Trader Joe's.

It seems a shame that fruit and vegetables have to LOOK perfect. We used to buy huge sacks of carrots that were merely 'mis-shapen' for our horses. But after tasting them, we realized 'yep - it's JUST the shape'. The prices were amazingly low.

Shops within a chain can very hugely in what they stock and what they charge. As I discovered when Tesco proved to charge less than Tesco Express.

Google is your friend.

BTW Jewel was one of the worlds first Supermarket (Grocery) stores...

Before Jewel aand National there were only mom and pop stores that were quite small.

Here's a picture from way back in the 1950's

Indeed so. But the majority of people live in nations without these chains, to simply adding 'a competitor' is surely not unreasonable. That was the point I was attempting to put across.

They are sort of competitors, but not really.
Trader Joe's is a much smaller chain.
There are many many Jewel/Albertson stores in each city in the US. Jewel/Albertson is roughly the same size of business as Tesco.
Trader Joe is regional and has maybe one store in each city where they operate.

The problem with googling Jewel is... well, try it.

So Trader Joe's is more niche?
Yes, it competes more closely to Whole Foods in the US. You pay more at Trader Joe's for the same products than at Jewel/Albertson, Kroger, etc.
Then there are stores like Cosco where the products are even cheaper.

And I did google Jewel, that's where I got that picture.

There are plenty more where these came from (Google)

Plus a plethora of statistical and corporate info...

Just having an internet connection is a wonderful opportunity to learn about just about anything one could possibly be interested in.

All one needs is an open mind, an interest and basic computer literacy.

Jewel is a single-songwriter... as I an now painfully too aware. I thought you meant the photograph of her wearing a crocheted bedspread on stage. It's... well it's SOMETHING alright. I'm not a crochet expert, BTW, so I could offer you a formal critique.

Used to be here in the NW
but since the economy scam, kroger safeway
(major supermarkets) are running away with higher prices ...

matter of I just glimped an article about kroger and albertsons merging so they can charge even more

I can hardly claim Forbes as a flawless source, but 40% of all food waste is fruit and vegetables that don't meet cosmetic standards?

So essentially, the very low price of the carrots we bought for the horses was just someone picking them up, putting them in bags and distributing them. I am talking 35 years ago, but it was something like 5p/Kg... and I presume their was a profit margin built in.

let me just say - carrot and lentil soup was a very cheap option for us. Handy, considering how much the horses cost in other ways,
