Opioids The danger of using loperamide ( My experience)

I suffer from chronic constipation from use of opiods. It started of as annoying and progressed to a situation where I was lucky to have a bm 2 times a month. I am on Fentanyl patch 50mcg and Tapendol 100mg. The Tapendol is extremely constipating. So after trying stool softeners and other home remedies I over the course of a day took 6 loperamide. I woke up in the middle of the night with excruciating stomach cramping. I was salivating and ran to the toilet where over the course of a few hours my body was hit with vomiting and cramping as it tried to pass impacted stool. I ended up in the emergency room. I developed a blockage in my intestine and had to have emergency surgery. During the surgery I developed bleeding and they almost lost me. I spent 4 months inpatient and had two more surgeries for bleeding. I know this is an extreme case but it happens to many people. If you suffer from constipation due to opioid use, use extreme caution when you use Loperamide.

( sorry for the gross topic 8o but its my reality)

Because my constipation was crippling and I was trying to fix the situation.

But, loperamide is an anti-diarrhia meaning it basically constipates you. Did you think loperamide did the opposite and loosen stools? Or am I missing something here?
Probably, a bad idea taking more opioids when constipated the way you have been....

I understand this is hard when on a daily pain medication but, being on a long acting opioid medication especially, fentanyl. Since there is never a time when you don't have fentanyl in your body you don't give your stomach time to speed up a bit and digest....It stays in the opioid constipation mode 24/7....
This is why I am only on IR medications these days. My condition gets worse with slow digestive system. I HAVE to go to the bathroom daily.

Loperamide is a strong opioid that affect only your peripheral neurvous system, which mean it will ativate the mu receptor in your GI and constipate you more.

Did you think it was supose to act like a stool softener ?

Are you aware that Loperamide IS an opioid? Specifically designed to only have action on the intestinal opiate receptors and not effect the brain. It is used for the exact opposite reason that you used it. Not to mention you took 6 of them which is probably more than you should take in a day. The only danger here is not knowing what the medications you are taking are doing to you and using them inappropriately.

Ask your doctor about amitiza it works for my opiate constipation. Its like getting an enema from inside your colon. Also do more research next time you fucked up pretty bad.

I absolutely agree that I messed up, and am paying the price. This is the reason I came to Bluelight. I want to have the resources that can be found here to help me make informed decisions. I do not take lightly the fact that I almost died. Thank you for your responses, they are appreciated.

Well fuck, that could have killed you. Two bowel movements a month is unacceptable. Please tell me your doctors are being proactive re preventing another bowel impaction?

I use epsom salts or milk of magnesia when I do have constipation. It is rather explosive in my experience.

Make sure to drink lots of water! Anytime you drink milk of magnesia or Mira lax make sure to drink a lot more water than you think you need. It will make that bowel movement a lot less uncomfortable.

I am unsure as to why you would take loperamide when you already had such bad chronic constipation. No wonder you ended up in the hospital... That is literally like the worst drug you could have taken given your circumstances, designed to accomplish the opposite of what you were intending.

Stool softeners, by my definition, are things like Docusate Sodium (200mg first day, then 100mg per day until you've completely emptied your bowels.

Add Chelated Magnesium to your other vitamins, taken nightly/with dinner as a preventative measure, also try significantly increasing your water / electrolyte intake, and of course try increasing soluble fibers and making other changes to your diet, + getting exercise would also help you SIGNIFICANTLY more than any medication.

dude, I've used high doses of loperamide as a substitute to suboxone when my script was running low. It's an ANTI-DIAHREAL (as in anti-poop) - you need to get some sort of "stool softener" or just use milk of magnesia as directed on the box to help you pass your BMs. milk of magnesia (with a lot of water) will help you have normal BMs even while using. I don't know if you're still using or not, but adding loperamide to your opioid dosage will only increase in constipation.
