The Big "I Can't Sleep" Thread - Insomniacs Unite!

melatonon.jpg

Ah yes, my FAVORITE part of every day -.-

If I had to take all that to sleep I would give up and switch to a benzodiazapine.

Lately I've been getting decent sleep. But some nights like tonight I get wired before bed. That's when I want somthing that will really put me to sleep. Smoking helps a little and I do eventually get to sleep.. but on those straight up insomniac nights like right now I could use a benzo. Even though I'm not in favor of them. They can have there uses if used sparingly. Extremely sparingly lol.

ZMA

This shit is a god send, it helps more than benzos do for me, 10 minutes and I am out and I normally take 1-2 hours even if I take benzos some times.

AMAZING and I am normally a very skeptical person, I don't believe in many drugs but wow who would have thought it was just magnesium deficiency?

and the dreams you have on this stuff are incredible!

perhaps it wasn't the actual melatonin making you sick but one of the artificial sweeteners it probably contains. Also, melatonin strongly detoxifies the body and if you have a lot of toxins built up in your body, they will enter your bloodstream before your body is able to get rid of them, therefore possibly making you "sick" in the morning. Maybe you would not get sick if you didn't have toxins built up in your fat.

Melatoning "detoxifies your body" what a load of horse shit.

It doesn't do anything of the sort.

It is a typical bullshit claim by supplements.

What does "detoxify" even mean. How are toxins even built up in your body? What are toxins?

The claim is so unspecific it doesn't mean anything, it is just like all those detox regimes. The entire concept is a joke.

So you got your information from yourself. Unless you have evidence (scientific, study, or otherwise), we cannot even claim that your statement is supported.

Sorry that isn't how it works.

He made the claim that melatonin detoxifies the body, quite an outlandish claim, hence he should be able to back it up with evidence, the onus is on him to prove it, not on me to disprove it.

If it worked like you are saying I could make up any old bullshit and peddle it as true and it would be up to you to disprove it. Here is a fun one, tomato chutney makes your liver stronger, the claim is true. If you don't have evidence showing otherwise, then my claim is true.

See how ridiculous that would be?

It How are toxins even built up in your body? What are toxins?

Toxins are substances produced by living organisms(and it follows from that the majority of them are amino acid chains in peptide or protein form) which have some particularly deleterious effect on other living organisms mediated by the toxin binding to receptors on various cells and disrupting normal metabolic functions. It's a subset of "poison" and 'venom' is subset of toxin.

How are they built up? Some are produced as a result of your metabolic processes(and those of your gut flora). Others are found from exogenous sources such as in food/water/air(alfatoxin or boutulism e.g.), as result of infection(tetanospasmin), or due to invenomation (cobra bite) by another organism.

Fair enough?

Melatonin is possibly an anti-oxidant, but if reactive oxygen species are properly considered toxins,..is riding the line a bit...yeah, they are produced biologically...but also widespread from abiogenic sources and very simple small molecules. It would "de-toxify" these substances by forming an inert, non-harmful, easily excreted product in a reaction with them.

I think its all hype, but whatever, here are some factoids for ya.

Yeah I've read about melatonin being an anti oxidant, but well my thoughts on those for "detoxifying your body" are quite low so I am far from convinced it will have any net positive effect on the body apart from its studied effects on sleep.

Thanks for the info.

I was still awaiting his answer. You gave me yours and I replied. Replying to him twice, asking again for support of his statements, would be exacerbating.

I honestly feel bad for you if you don't think that toxins build up in your body if you don't take good care of it.

I do agree that saying melatonin detoxifies is a bit out there, but hey, people have claimed stranger things. It works for sleep, which I believe was probably his point, not that it actually detoxifies.

I honestly feel bad for you if you don't think that toxins build up in your body if you don't take good care of it.

I'm sure they do but if you can't explain to me what they are and via what process it is a pretty bloody big leap to expect me to believe some other synthetic hormone cleanses your body of them.

So what are these toxins, why are they toxic and how do they build up in your body?

^ Ever hear of "free radicals"? Those are probably not what S_L was referring to, but yeah, toxins do exist and they are in our bodies if we do not treat them well.

Of course I know what free radicals are, by definition they are technically any ion that is floating around in your body, molecule, atom etc. Some might be toxic, some might be beneficial to your body.

You might as well say "guess you've never heard of molecules then" it is about as unspecific and meaningless as "free radicals" when you are talking about toxins.

So let me be more precise, what are the specific molecules/free radicals that are toxic to the body and why are they toxic, also how do they build up/where are they stored?d

I have never heard of free radicals being beneficial, but whatever.

If I knew what the specific molecules/free radicals were that are toxic to the body, I could pretty much cure cancer. They are toxic because they're not good for our body. They build up in our cells because our bodies think we're feeding them food when in reality we are feeding them food-like products stripped of their nutrients and chock full of chemicals that our bodies have no idea how to get rid of. They are stored anywhere you can get cancer, which is another way of saying, "anywhere."
