The BDD Wellbutrin (Bupropion) Thread

This is an antidepressant suitable for people who have depression (or as Zyban for nicotine cessation), regardless of what drugs one abuses.

It won't be a problem to take Wellbutrin, while (ab)using downers (benzos I assume?) and opioids.

Benzos/alcohol. I was thinking since all these things lower the seizure threshold? Thats why I asked lol thanks

Bupropion (Wellbutrin) lowers the seizure threshold, while benzodiazepines increase it. Bupropion is significantly different that other anti-depressants in its mode of action. First of all, it is NOT an SSRI. At lower doses it is a dopamine re-uptake inhibitor, at higher doses it also impacts norepinephrine.

I am not a doctor, but in my own experience bupropion works best in conjunction with other anti-depressents, in my case venlafaxine. As it is a dopamine re-uptake inhibitor it can cause some amount of insomnia, especially when taken close to bed. It should be taken with food, so I tried to take mine with breakfast.

I get a little down over the winter months. A touch of seasonal affective affective disorder. I found it very helpful in conjunction with the venlafaxine for that,

Best of luck to you?

This is my third day on Wellbutrin. I was recently diagnosed with moderate depression. I take 300mg/day (150 in the am, 150 in the pm).

I'm already noticing that I feel a little stimulated all day - almost like a mild caffeine buzz. I really like it. The only down side is the insomnia - the first day I was on it I got only 2 hours of sleep - and the night after I surprisingly wasn't very tired. I've come to appreciate the joys of Benadryl and melatonin.

I'm also noticing that my previous depressed thoughts have diminished significantly.

Best of luck to you...

I couldn't qualitatively distinguish it from placebo after 4 weeks consecutive use, so I discontinued it.

After ten years on and off antidepressant medication I've come to the conclusion that their at most, inadequate and in the very least, sugar pills. This is concerning me. I wouldn't be arrogant enough to make a blanket generalization claiming they're of no use to anyone, as others often do.

It is recommended that you not drink alcohol while on Wellbutrin. My question is....should you:

A) Not drink alcohol to excess
B) Not drink a modest amount

or

C) Not drink AT ALL.

Anyone have any experience with alcohol + Wellbutrin and can shed some light on this?

My experience has been that drinking alcohol and taking wellbutrin just fucked up my coordination a little more. That's it.

I'm on 150mg of Wellbutrin daily, have been on and off of it for about 2 years, and I cannot tolerate ANY alcohol while on it. I've always had a low tolerance for alcohol before I ever started taking it, but when I'm on Wellbutrin alcohol makes me really sleepy, dizzy, and gives me a horrible hangover the next day. I wouldn't advise mixing the two, though that's just my experience. Maybe start with a small amount and see what your personal tolerance is to it. You may discover that you can't (or don't want to) drink as much as you would normally, but it might not make you want to give it up completely.

Hi! I've been on Wellbutrin 300 (among other antideps) for about 6months now but I only take it in the morning. It's one of the more 'stimulating' antideps. If I take it in the pm I lie awake with what feels like restless legs but it's an all over sensation that can drive me crazy.

I would talk with your doc; if you're taking an extended release version there's no reason to take it twice a day, once in the am would be sufficient. Otherwise, sounds like it's starting to work for you.
Good luck!

You're just asking for a seizure at that dose.

Mixing wellbutrin with Serotonergic drugs isn't wise. You're risking cardiovascular issues, issues with eyesight health, added emphasis on withdrawal when you do come off (Or did you plan on taking this for the rest of your life? Hope not. It's going to stop working and at a certain point it won't be safe to increase the dose any further. At that point your SOL and JWF. Shit out of luck and jolly well fucked. Then you've got quite the withdrawal ahead of you. Even with a taper schedule you're going to have WD's that are severe and last for 1-8 months, depending on the timeframe of usage), etc.

Encouraging people to 'talk with their doc' is naive and foolish.

Research what you can, know the risks, don't trust your psychiatrist (He's working FOR you, remember?) and if you absolutely need these drugs as a last resort, keep the doses low.

I've been on them all, and I've ten years experience in this feild, both experientially, and scholastically.

Good luck.

Yeah, I know, I hate it when someone says 'talk w/ doc'; I meant in terms of getting an XL version instead of taking the shit at night. I just spent 18 months tapering off Effexor because the w/d is so fucking bad. I had been on it for 10 yrs. Fuck the doc's instructions on w/d from that - I had to do it on a day to day basis or go crazy.

As for myself at this point, I don't give a fuck about the longterm (or any) side effects as I hope to be dead before any of that shit happens. I'm actually hoping that the meds will hasten that event.

Yes. I'm two weeks off 300mg effexor cold turkey.

It was the hardest thing I've ever gone through and I'm still not out of the woods yet. Makes valium withdrawal seem like a walk in the park.

These meds aren't fit for pigs.

I can't believe you went cold turkey -WOW- I couldn't do it. I was proud of myself for doing in a year and a half - oh well. Seriously, that sounds like masochism dude. Good luck to you!

I will admit to this: I keep what's left of my Effexor prescription (3-4 immediate release tabs) in my medicine cabinet...just in case that w/d shit rears its ugly head. Now, that's sad...

What's weird is that my sister took it for about 2 years, stopped cold turkey and never had a single discontinuation symptom, ever. You would think we would have very similar neurophysiology being sisters, but I guess not.

I tapered for 12 days and jumped off.

I've been using baclofen with good results. The nightmares were intense though.

Wasn't masochism I just don't have money nor insurance. Thems the breaks.

I've heard of using diphenhydramine (Benadryl) for the w/d symptoms (a joke) but not Baclofen. Was that your own idea or doc's advice or did you read it somewhere?

What this guy said.

I was put on ungodly high doses of wellbutrin. I was also using every drug under the sun. It royally fucked me up. Luckily the only problem I have is severe panic disorder. However it could be worse for me. The doses of wellbutrin my dr had me on caused very disturbing and unpleasant hallucinations. Thing is when I was put on it I wasnt depressed.... But became depressed while I was on it... It was a nightmare. They also tried every ADHD med on me while all of this was going on.. All I can say is it was horrible.
