POLICE have seized a half-a-million dollars worth of drugs after cracking a syndicate in raids across Melbourne today.

Officers seized a shopping list of drugs worth $500,000 including cocaine, ecstasy, amphetamines and GHB after raids across Melbourne.

Five people were arrested after drug task force detectives alongside Federal investigators swooped in morning raids on seven properties from Melbourne’s northern to southern suburbs.

Three men and two women, all aged between 21 and 47, were charged with drug related offences.

Two of the men were also charged with weapons offences.

Detectives and members of the Australian Crime Commission exercised warrants on homes in Carrum Downs, Richmond, Eltham, Pascoe Vale, Glenhuntly and Elsternwick.

The raids netted a “large quantity” of drugs including cocaine, ecstasy, amphetamine, cannabis, steroids, and more than 80L of liquid GHB or fantasy, all with a street value worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Detectives also seized precursor chemicals used to make drugs, $35,000 cash and weapons including a Taser stun gun and a police-style baton.

Police say the arrests break a syndicate allegedly importing drugs with NSW connections, using intelligence from the Australian Crime Commission, which has a focus on organised crime.

Drug Task Force Det-Inspector Doug Fryer said that the arrests aimed to send a message to criminals that authorities were working more closely than ever to flush them out.

"Operations such as this should send a clear message to crime syndicates that Australian law enforcement is working together and will jointly target anyone who thinks they can break our laws,” Det-Inspector Fryer said.

"Australian law enforcement is no longer bound by jurisdictional borders and Victoria Police and other agencies will aggressively pursue anyone that sees our streets as an easy mark for illicit drug sales.”

Among those arrested include a 43-year-old Carrum Downs man, a 27-year-old woman from Eltham who faces charges in NSW, a 47-year-old Pascoe Vale man, a 21-year-old Glen Huntly woman, and a 32-year-old Elsternwick man.

Joint drug raids a success in Gippsland

Friday, 31 July 2009 10:01

A joint Victoria Police and Customs and Border Protection operation has led to the seizure of over a kilogram of amphetamines and one arrest earlier this week.

Customs and Border Protection officers at the Melbourne international mail centre intercepted a package from the Netherlands on 6 July 2009 that was found to contain more than one kilogram of amphetamines.

This interception led to a joint Customs and Border Protection and Victoria Police operation that resulted in the arrest of a 49-year-old Tubbut man, Michael Curran, in Laverton on Monday 27 July.

A subsequent search warrant was then carried out by detectives from the Drug Task Force, Bairnsdale Criminal Investigation Unit, East Gippsland Tasking Unit and Customs and Border Protection officers at the man’s Gippsland property.

Mr Curran was charged with importing a marketable quantity of a border controlled drug and faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on 27 July.

He will reappear in the Melbourne Magistrate’s Court on 20 October 2009.

Head of the Drug Task Force Inspector Doug Fryer said the issue of drug importation into this state is one that police and other agencies will continue to target.

“The success of this operation has highlighted the effectiveness of multi-agency cooperation,” he said.

“Drugs are not just a problem in Victoria but right across Australia and the world, and police will continue to detect and arrest those who choose to break the law.

“Trafficking of drugs in this state will not be tolerated. We give warning to anyone who is approached to import or sell drugs in Australia that you will be targeted by police and there are severe penalties when caught.

“It is important that we continue to target this issue by working with other agencies and sharing intelligence and resources for the best possible outcome.”

Customs and Border Protection National Manager Investigations, Mr Richard Janeczko, said Customs and Border Protection takes its role in keeping drugs off the streets of Australia very seriously.

“Customs and Border Protection uses a variety of methods to detect the illegal movements of goods, including illicit drugs, across the Australian border,” he said.

“We continue to intercept prohibited goods at the border and work with our policing counterparts to investigate and bring those responsible to justice.”

Darwin police say they are continuing to search the home of a British man allegedly caught dealing drugs in Darwin last night.

Darwin Watch Commander Gary Smith says the man approached two off-duty interstate police officers in the city.

"A federal police officer who coincidently used to be a member of NT police and a Victorian police officer [were] up here enjoying the Darwin nightlife when they were approached and offered drugs in the mall," he said.

The officers contacted their local counterparts and the man was allegedly found at a supermarket on Smith Street with 50 ecstasy tablets shortly before 4:00am ACST.

Police say they have also seized about 200 additional ecstasy tablets from where the man was staying.

They say they are still evaluating the street value and expect to charge the man later today.

Police say the man was visiting the Territory from the United Kingdom.

Top US snowboarders face cannabis charges
4:00AM Tuesday Aug 04, 2009

Two high-profile US snowboarders - one understood to be a Winter Olympics silver medallist - have been arrested and charged with possessing cannabis in Wanaka.

The men had a significant amount of the drug in their possession when police doing a random breath-alcohol check stopped their car on Beaconpoint Rd on Saturday evening, Sergeant Paul Crosswell said yesterday.

One of the men was driving.

No other charges have been laid and the police have declined to publicly identify the snowboarders.

They are scheduled to appear in the Queenstown District Court on Monday.

The men, aged in their 20s, told police they were in New Zealand as tourists.

It is not known whether they intend to compete in the New Zealand Snowboarding Open, which begins in Wanaka on August 11, or the Winter Games NZ starting on August 22.

Attempts to contact US snowboard coach Mike Janowski yesterday were unsuccessful.

The men are not on the list of US entrants received for the snowboard open.

The maximum penalty for a conviction for possession of marijuana is three months' jail and/or a $500 fine.

Drug dealer jailed

Updated 3 hours 26 minutes ago

* Map: Canberra 2600

A drug dealer, who was found with so much cash in his wallet that he had trouble closing it, will spend 15 months in jail for trafficking methylamphetamine.

In 2008 police stopped the car of Nuno Rodrigues and found $5,500 in his wallet and more than $1,000 on the passenger's seat.

Next to the cash was a pencil case with methylamphetamine inside.

Rodrigues was found guilty of drug trafficking and possessing stolen property.

In sentencing today in the ACT Magistrates Court, Magistrate Karen Fryar said she believed the 33-year-old trafficked drugs for his own commercial gain not because of his need as a drug user.

She said as courts had noted in the past, drug dealing was a blight upon the community.

She sentenced him to nearly three years in jail but he will be eligible for parole in 15 months.

Heroin courier jailed in Thailand

Sian Powell, Bangkok | August 06, 2009

SHACKLED at the ankles, with his head bowed, Sydney man Andrew Hood barely flinched when a panel of judges in Bangkok's Central Criminal Court yesterday sentenced him to life in prison for an attempt to smuggle 3kg of heroin from Thailand into Australia.

Hood had earlier told The Australian he had been promised $15,000 for the smuggling run by someone he knew in Sydney; and it was tempting because he had lost his job and his car had been repossessed.

A former heroin addict, Hood had never left Australia before, and he was only in Thailand for a few days before he was arrested at the airport.

"It's cost me my life," he said from behind the screens of a visiting cell in Bangkok's Central Correctional Institution for Drug Addicts, some time after he was caught. I wouldn't want no one to go through this."

Hood said he had not been aware of other Australians serving lengthy jail terms for drug smuggling. "I didn't research it all; it's the first time out of my country. I didn't research the penalties. I knew from the start that my heart wasn't in it, but my head was greedy."

The Thai judges yesterday said the crime was extremely serious, but the sentence had been reduced from the death penalty because Hood had freely admitted his guilt.

Did Hood, 37, expect the life sentence? Barely raising his head, he said "yes". But later, as he was escorted away from the court, he said he was "disappointed" by the verdict.

Before an earlier hearing, he told The Australian he had confessed to the crime to avoid the death penalty.

The former storeman, who lost his job when he hurt his hand, had agreed to try to slip through customs at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport in December last year with packages of heroin strapped to his legs and body. Police said they knew Hood and an associate had purchased heroin, and had photographed the scene at Hood's hotel in Bangkok.

Hood had earlier refused to reveal the name of his associate, fearing retribution. But the Bangkok court heard an Australian man, "Josip", had travelled with Hood to Thailand, met him at his hotel, and helped him to strap on the narcotics.

Thailand has issued an arrest warrant for Josip, who it appears has fled the country.

Since his arrest, Hood has had no friends or relatives visit him.
