US Politics the 2025 trump presidency thread

you sound like my dad that compares a still photo of Tim walz waving at the crowd to a video of Elon pounding his chest, biting his lip and whipping out his arm. My dad is so fucking stupid that a still photo of Tim walz is enough to “both sides” the issue for him. I think it’s that he’s just actually that stupid. Dude believes women were made from ribs and men made from dirt 2000 years ago so it’s maybe it’s just stupidity and not malicious. It’s hard to give him them benefit of the doubt and just say he’s stupid because it’s so obvious
Lol, it's like a prerequisite for you lefties to not get along with your immediate family

I think one thing we CAN state is that assertion that it was a 'Roman' salute is ridiculous. There is no record wharsoever of such a salute ever being used within the Roman empire.

As someone noted, the first time it was used in Rome was in 1919 by Mussolini.

Steve Bannon apparently used exactly the same salute and Elon Musk performed the salute twice. I cannot believe either of them were unfamiliar of where the salute originated.
I’m ready to give my blood for this shit if there is a coordinated resistance.

Valhalla shit. If there’s a group of ppl that decide to use force to stand up to this. I will inslist

it hasn't started yet but. if the last 24 hours predict what the new trump administration will look like, expect an even bigger chaotic dumpster fire than his last term.

trump looks pretty weak and elon has demonstrated clearly he knows nothing about getting shit done in washington.

to quote rep. chip roy of texas: "it's embarrassing. it's shameful."

he doesn't seem too worried by trump's lame threat to end his political career unless he gets behind the bill, does he?

indeed.

A bigger dumpster fire then his last term? Our country was doing the best it's ever been when he was in office the first time. And if it was so bad like you are falsely claiming he wouldn't have been reelected back into office. All though he's got some work to do cleaning up what the democrats did the last 4 years ruining this country. If anyone can do it, it's Trump :)

i think you're better than this, j.

i actually watched that speech quite recently and if you look at the frames immediately before the 'salute' (and i say frames as she made that hand gesture twice) it's pretty obvious she's waving. or pointing.

but, if you think she wasn't waving and pointing, i'll agree to disagree.

well, that depends on how and what you choose to measure, right? i disagree.

And if it was so bad like you are falsely claiming he wouldn't have been reelected back into office.

not necessarily. there's a large part of his constituency who'll vote for him regardless of what he says or does.

a lot of people voted for him this time round because he ran on "groceries" and said he'd bring prices down on day one. he said he'd end the war in ukraine before his inauguration.

neither happened.

alasdair

^ and your point?

a picture of hitler waving and a picture of hitler pointing. in neither is he doing the 'nazi' salute. i think those pics make my point better than they make the point you think you're making...

and the walz video is weaksauce. clearly a wave. his hand is almost completely perpendicular to the ground:

He's already helping AMERICA more then any other president has, he's getting rid of the illegal immigrants, he's cut foreign aid unlike Biden who every time he met with Zakensky, Biden would give him another 10 billion for Ukraine. Not like americans could be using that money right? And trump has ended programs that were giving illegal immigrants billions of dollars through food snaps, social security, etc, like have you seen some of the foreign aid the democrats were giving out? One which included several million to Guatemala for transgender surgeries. Why would we be giving some shitty country like Guatamala millions of dollars for all their mentally ill trans people to get their private parts mutilated?! disgusting.

as i said, 'better' is subjective. i disagree.

he's cut foreign aid unlike Biden who every time he met with Zakensky, Biden would give him another 10 billion for Ukraine

that money was appropriated by congress. not donated by biden.

i get being angry but life's too short to get mad at things that aren't even happening.

It's amazing how seeemingly intelligent people will accept an image on it's face value EVEN when the person who posts it has a vested interest in using it to make a point. Telling isn't it? If someone doesn't think Elon Musk or Steve Bannon gave fascist salutes, why would they go to the trouble of misrepresenting images and implying that other politicans used such gestures?

Now I don't expect people to simply accept the source I have provided. But all of the footage IS available. If you uncritically believe a post made by some someone who has a vested interest, it simply exploses your prejudices. You choose to believe because you WANT to believe.

It does show how smart AI has got. If one can provide a set of training images of people giving fascist salutes and have it search through thousands of hours of video footage. It's VERY easy to misrepresent an image.

There are actually HUNDREDS of deepfake images of all manner of people apparently making the fascist salute. Anyone can create them in seconds.

If you actually CARE about the veracity of an image, you really need to use something like FotoForensics. The original metadata from the video footage should be exported with any image extracted from it. With this in hand one can quickly find the exact frame and view it in context.

Dude. We've been over this before. Those heatmaps represent the "extent" of liberal's or conservative's moral sphere, not the weight they actually dedicate to each area. I'll (again) quote from the paper you don't seem to want to link to.

"Finally, we assessed the heatmaps generated by participants’
clicks on the rung they felt best represented the extent of their
moral circle."

Yet you continue to try to make the claim that this paper proves that liberals value family, and country less.

As to Harvard paying more taxes. As much as college has become a money making scam, the idea is tempting. But, what I would actually support would be more govt money going to colleges to make them more accessible to all. A smarter America is good for the people and the economy as well.

However, since my post that you quoted addressed corporations jacking up prices under a Dem to influence the political conversation as well as the normal greed, your response is a non sequitur.

As someone said. A Nazi salute to troll is still a Nazi salute. If a Dem publicly said, "Donald Trump and all Trumpers have anal sex with each other" and then said, "Hey, I was just trolling.", I don't think that would fly. And, that's not as bad as a Nazi salute.

It's obviously meant as a dog whistle to get certain votes that there is a lot of other evidence Trump is shooting for.

But, the biggest thing to me is people saying it wasn't a Nazi salute and/or cherry picking random Dem arm movements. C'mon.
It's actually the lying which has me the most involved against this particular cancer we face.

"No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son of Tricky Dicky
Is going to Mother Hubbard soft soap me
With just a pocketful of soap
Money for dope
Money for rope"

Rope to hang yourself, don'tcha know.

I think they’re all waving and pointing/gesturing for emphasis, Dems & Reps. That’s my point. I think it’s lunacy to read so much into people’s gestures. It’s also silly to compare photos to video. You can only compare within a medium. That’s why I only posted vids.

indeed. the country has problems. we're talking about people's lives and livelihoods. serious problems need people who are serious about solving problems.

you can fucking hate joe biden with a passion but he left the white house with some historic gains.

according to the bureau of labor statistics, under his administration, the economy added jobs every month for 4 straight years (tied the second-longest period of employment expansion on record).

when he took office, trump handed him an unemployment rate of 6.8%. when he left office the rate was at a 54-year low of 3.4%.

real gdp growth and gdp per capita were up.

and sure, inflation was up. trump promised to fix that on day 1 and, surprise surprise, nothing happened.

my point is that trolling is probably hilarious to a bunch of meme-obsessed, adolescent-level adults.

but americans are hurting and musk and trump's performative b.s. isn't going to fix it.

if he was such a hugely popular election winner, ask yourself why he's currently the least popular president in 70 years.
