US Politics the 2025 trump presidency thread

I find it hard to believe that Donald Trump and Elon Musk won't at some point end up in a disagreement and if there has been one theme throughout Donald Trumps life, not just his political career, it's replacing people WHOEVER they are.

So I'm curious to see how long the association lasts for.

It's certainly clear that loyalty is valued over ability. I'm uncertain how it will all end, but I'm sure it will be interesting to watch.

Link? Evidence? Not just a left wing blog or specialty interest paper please. I want to see primary evidence.

My grandparents were racist AF too. My grandfather called black people the N word. Doesn't mean that I am a racist. This guilt by association thing that the radical left tries to do is immoral and nobody is buying it anymore.

Most people don't agree that he did a sig heil. He himself said he didn't. I don't believe he did either. Actually the real truth is that most people don't give a shit either way. There has to be actual far-right / neo-nazi POLICY occurring for us to believe these audacious claims.

Nobody is believing this shit anymore.

You actually believe that Elon did a sig heil to the American people and you're one of those leftists who think that Trump is far-right and bringing the Third Reich to America. You seriously have ZERO credibility left in this conversation. I don't believe one word you say anymore.

I'm not even a Trump or Elon supporter, I just hate misrepresentation. There's so much else that the Trump admin could be critiqued for, that is based in actual reality and policy. These batshit rants about neo-nazism and far-right take overs are why the Dems have been eviscerated in the US.

TDS is real, it seems!
I didn't realize an interview with Elon and his family members as well as a newspaper interview in a historical archive weren't primary sources

I suppose you could dig up his grandpa and ask how he felt about the apartheid, or you could go interview Elon yourself?

most in the u.s.? most in the world? how do you even begin to measure that?

well he would say that, wouldn't he?

and any way, he's a liar.

alasdair

For those outside the UK, the newspaper I've linked to is generally considered to be a pretty reliable source.

It's not exactly a lie but the way his tweet is written certainly may be misleading.

great. could you link me to one of the polls please? thanks.

What does that have to do with anything?

his own wife - and the mother of the child - said it wasn't true.

he literally lied about his child dying in his arms and then, in the very next sentence, said "I have no mercy for anyone who would use the deaths of children for gain, politics or fame". how little self-awareness can a person have?

he's a liar. and he's in bed with the liar of all liars.

alasdair

I have noted that Elon Musk does appear to have a shaky grasp on reality,

But equally, I do think that one thing the Republican party HAS understood is the news cycle. If you make an outragious statment, by the time anyone has been able to fact-check, the next outragious statement is made and few people ever read that a given assertion is untrue. They have understood that we now live in a post-truth age.

I would be entirely unsurprised to see the Democratic party adopt similar tactics before the next election. It plainly works and whatever your politics, I think every politician shares the opinion that if they are not in power, they are powerless. I find it very sad that we have reached this state but the number of people who will really make an effort to find out the facts is small when compared to the size of the electorate.

Perfidity is part and parcel of modern politics but I would suggest that previously we were more acoustomed to more subtle tactics. Donald Trump has discovered that one does not need to go to those lengths and whatever people think, he won the election.

One of the better modifications made in the US election system was to limit presidents to two terms. I suppose one worry is that someone may attempt to alter that.

Someone who knew him said back when Musk was a friendless autistic child, he'd spend all day immersing himself in comics and fantasize about being a superhero that was the savior of humanity. Considering that it's plausible that he was just trying to do some cringy superhero pose. It's perfectly plausible he was doing an actual Hitler salute. I believe he did it knowing full well what people would construe it as. He knew the left would speak out about it and also knew that the right would accuse them of crying wolf due to past scenarios when they have. He just needed a good distraction while he prepped his little squad of incel hackers to help Trump dismantle the government,

The thing is, it's very likely to work.

For what it's worth, there is almost no evidence that the Romans saluted in that manner. While Cicero mentions a salute, he does not specify it's form. It was also in an 18th century painting which may have become a trope for motion picture creators.

A bloke down the pub joked that it WAS a Roman salute, but Rome circa 1923.

Still, if it sends the appropriate signal to the appropriate demographic, only THEY will remember it in ohhh, a month's time.

I would like you to link up some reliable polls as well, please.
If a source is misquoting an actual interview, that should be rather easy to refute. If a source you don't like states hard facts instead of opinion disguised as such, your response to the chance to discredit a questionable source should be elation.
Backing up the claims you make works both ways. I don't know a single person who saw that clip that didn't cringe at the Nazi salute. And, yes, I do know Trumpers who have seen it. They usually say, "Glad Elon isn't President." (although, he kinda is)

Well at least you have a more realistic take on what happened. I did consider that he was just trolling. That's what the whole Trump admin does on a regular basis to distract people from what they're really up to and it seems to work.

Not sure what the point is of bringing up Musk's childhood. A lot of people start as losers and then become great later. It seems like the left are doxxing every iota of his life to try and find dirt to somehow prove he's a bad person. I haven't seen him do anything bad on a policy level just yet. And I am grateful he created X so that we can talk without being viciously censored all the time by rabid leftists.

Trump wants to take ownership of Gaza and build a bunch of luxury realis state. He claims it will create jobs for the people of Palestine.

Two grandiose narcissists coming together to run things - what could possibly go wrong???

Playing mindgames isn't a good way to run a fair and transparent government.

Playing mindgames IS a good way to troll.

Trolling might be fun but it's an inherently anti-social activity.

Normalizing any of this is absurd.

Sadly, I think that is exactly what is happening.

Pretty sure he’s doing it because he knew people would freak out about it and he was like “ what can I do to fuck with these guys heads that have nothing better to do than…”

So he did the silly salute. Pretty sure he’s autistic and not only that he is trolling. I guarantee it
