The 2019 Trump Presidency Thread

I definitely support any western government showing pro-democracy support via legislation for Hong Kong. Though I'm not sure of the efficacy of this. I don't like how everyone is pussyfooting around Beijing right now, we're consulting Chinese representatives for anything "offensive" to mainland China before releasing Hollywood movies now, for example. If you thought "politically correct" was out of hand in the US... take a look at China, one of the two world powers looking to dominate us as we continue to implode.

It feels more like Trump is doing this as part of turning the screws on China over the ongoing trade war and diplomatic discussions and less because Trump gaf about democracy. In my eyes. Still good to see support for the HK. The amount of pandering that goes on towards China regarding political correctness is absurd to me.

This could probably use it's own thread but I will leave to mods discretion.

Thanks for the multiple sources. Interesting read how some of the headlines indicate this will be bad for all involved. The negative effects alluded to is HK losing it's special status and how it is treated differently by the US during the US-CHN trade discussions (HK as remained free from many of the tariffs installed against CHN). That's a very odd position to take - a) that HK is losing it's special status when in fact one of the objectives of the new legislation is annual review of HK's autonomy from CHN; and b ) that this trade aspect is more important than the rights the HK citizens are fighting for.

I am quite surprised to hear of it being passed in the House in October and recently in the Senate. This is the first I've heard of actual legislation being passed by anyone during the Trump administration. I guess Congress and Trump ARE able to work together on some things.

My view somewhat aligns with yours, but not completely, I think. I do believe Trump is trying to wield as much power as possible to influence China but I can't predict his motives. He could be creating another pressure point (HK support) that he can later let off on as a concession in order to gain more monetary trade gains which could be the penultimate goal. Or, he could actually give a shit and see this as his Presidential responsibility to support the HK protesters as the face and voice of America. Oddly, there isn't much of a personal angle for his benefit (though, I'm sure he will proclaim some personal skill or talent in the negotiations, and the liberals will find some way to shade this as being unAmerican or for personal gain on his part...grounds for impeachment ver.314, I'm sure).

I also agree that the amount of pandering towards China and political correctness is absurd. Very absurd.

Well said, especially concerning his motives. I may have jumped the gun there a bit.

I found it quite interesting to see how it was spun by different agencies as well...

In terms of personal benefit, it's around this time in their tenure when many presidents start looking to build their legacy (especially if there is a chance they won't be coming back to the gig). I'm not sure that there is anything that could go down as a sweeter legacy than helping out a little democratic society vs a huge communist shitshow.

trump's been pretty open not wanting his staff to speak at recent impeachment hearings. he's also been extremely guarded about his tax returns and we all know the story there.

you can usually file these things under #theresalwaysatweet, wherein a tweet from the past comes back to haunt him - he's usually doing to saying the exact same thing for which he's criticized or attacked others.

sadly on this occasion there's no... wait a minute! nevermind!

I laughed for a solid several minutes when I saw the footage from that Trump speech regarding toilets, sinks and other "elements of bathrooms" lately

It's hilarious to imagine Trump getting on the horn with the EPA after he choked the White House toilet again. He may be a terrible president but goddamn if he hasn't provided me with so much mirth and laughter over the years

If you haven't seen it yet, enjoy:

Not sure it haunts him as much as us...

He seems almost as indifferent to his past fuckups as his current ones

you're going to find a higher proportion of open minds, which equals intelligence imo

Not just your opinion. Openness to experience is correlated positively with intelligence.

From the Wikipedia:
Openness to experience correlates with intelligence, correlation coefficients ranging from about r = .30 to r = .45.[16]

YES, TRUMP'S DETENTION CENTERS ARE CONCENTRATION CAMPS

These are concentration camps, and denying as much merely prepares the way for worse atrocities to come.

Yeah it seems to be the result of a deliberate conflation of "concentration camps" with the Nazi death camps. When in reality there are numerous examples of "concentration camps"...here in the good ol' USA we had Japanese internment and camps related to the forced relocation of groups like the Navajo and Apache in the southwest, to name a couple of examples unrelated to the holocaust.

Trump stumped for a guy (the loser of last gubernatorial election in Kentucky) who issues pardons to people even more atrocious than the ones Trump has pardoned (well at least “as bad”).

In one case, Bevin pardoned a man convicted of homicide. That man's family raised more than $20,000 at a political fundraiser to help Bevin pay off a debt owed from his 2015 gubernatorial campaign.

In all, the former governor signed off on 428 pardons and commutations since his loss to Democrat Andy Beshear, according to The Courier-Journal. The paper notes, "The beneficiaries include one offender convicted of raping a child, another who hired a hit man to kill his business partner and a third who killed his parents."
