The 2019 Trump Presidency Thread

Oddly enough, there are a lot of Americans who feel they are benefiting from Trump. First, or second, on his list of importants can still be debated, but many DO feel his Presidency is an improvement for the country.

Many feel they benefit from homeopathic remedies. Aka placebos.
While there's something to be said for perception over reality when what you're trying to solve is already a problem of perception, I'd still rather the system go with something more real.

it would hardly be the first time people have enthusiastically fucked themselves over.

You know I got a feeling hes gonna win the next election like hes gonna do something big to make him the hero im the "eyes of the people" if I know Trump

It's possible. Personally I think the next election is the democrats to lose rather than trumps to win. But of course, they very well could lose it.

I don't think it would be as hard to beat trump as a lot of people seem to think. But the democrats have to run the right person, and Hillary Clinton was not it.

We also need to not have a major terrorist attack, of something like 9/11 happened now support for trump would skyrocket.

I say that in spite of the fact I think trump is probably about the worst president we could ever have if there were an emergency.

A real emergency I mean, not an immigration rates have been falling but I WANT MY WALL NOW SO IT'S AN EMERGENCY! Emergency..

Trump 'very surprised' at Donald Trump Jr. subpoena, blasts John Kerry at press conference

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on Thursday blasted a decision by the Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee to subpoena Donald Trump Jr., saying he was "very surprised" by the move.

Days after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell declared "case closed" in the ongoing probes into the 2016 election, the GOP-led committee subpoenaed the president's son for reasons that were not immediately clear.

"I was very surprised," Trump said during impromptu press conference at the White House following an event on "surprise" medical bills that saddle patients with thousands of dollars in debt. "My son’s a very good person. My son was totally exonerated."

Trump didn’t say directly whether his son should fight the subpoena.

The president touched on several other controversial topics:

► Trump said former Secretary of State John Kerry should be "prosecuted" for meeting with Iranian officials last year. A Kerry spokesman responded by arguing that "everything President Trump said today is simply wrong, end of story."

► The president called on Congress to address "surprise" billing at hospitals that can unexpectedly leave patients thousands of dollars in debt after their care, focusing on a bipartisan slice of a highly divisive issue. Trump said his administration would announce new steps to deal with the issue in coming weeks. As part of his speech, Trump inspected the bill of a patient who was charged nearly $18,000 for a urine test.

► Hours before a high-stakes meeting with representatives from China, Trump said he received a "beautiful letter" from Chinese President Xi Jinping and would follow up with a phone call soon.

The news of the subpoena for Trump Jr. came as tensions are escalating between Democrats and the Trump administration. On Wednesday, Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee voted to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress over his refusal to hand over an unredacted copy of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Days before the committee issued the subpoena, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell urged Congress to move on from the Mueller probe, declaring "case closed." But in the same speech, McConnell touched on the Intelligence Committee's ongoing work and said it would help America be ready for future threats.

Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., declined to answer questions at the Capitol Thursday. But other Republicans on the committee were quick to make a distinction between their investigation and Mueller’s, and to downplay the subpoena.

“Mueller’s was a criminal justice investigation. Ours is an intelligence investigation about the Russia threat and about the way our agencies performed,” said Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla...

wait TRUMP JR JUST GOT SUPOENAED? Oh it just got good, you know they aren't playing those cards until they're ready to win

Or they are desperate. Got nothing from the Mueller probe, already have 20h of testimony from Jr. about a 20min meeting. What's left to ask? Many on the right indicate it's a ploy to lay a perjury trap on Jr. Same for the recent request for Barr to return to Congress which he skipped - what's to state beyond what's been said? Is it an attempt to trap people by having getting them to contradict what they've said earlier?

Personally, I have no concern either way regarding Jr. testifying. But I can see the Trump camp saying 'enough is enough'. Seriously, Jr.'s testimony already on record is far and beyond what should be needed to review a short meeting. I struggle to see a valid need to continue questioning indefinitely.

The whole "trap" thing doesn't make sense to me. They already have enough to impeach and are choosing not to.

They are going on a gold digging expedition so that when 2020 rolls around all the trash and recyclables get picked up by the truck.

The left has no boundaries. When we look to the extreme right, we can see things like white nationalism, which is deemed "going too far". That boundary is well established and agreed on by all.
When we look to the left, there are no boundaries. Anything goes. The left is staring into the abyss of insanity.

I think some people are always resistant to progress, it's always been that way and always will be. I think some people are crazy on the left, and also on the right, for sure. Because some people are just crazy. I think what the left wants in general is just for everyone to get along and work together, and to realize and act upon the damage we're doing. In my opinion, dissolution of nationalism and creating one global culture is the only way we can possibly stop warring with each other and destroying each other. Isolationism just breeds tribalism which breeds hatred and war. What you think of as insanity, I think of as being real with what's going on and cleaning up our act. We've been pretty terrible as a species so far, but we have so much potential for good, too. We're constantly doing both. If we get real, clean up the environment, work together, respect where we are and respect each other, we can do anything. I think that if we don't do that, though, we're going to keep imploding and destroying ourselves until we actually completely destroy ourselves. it's already happening, look at all the terrorism and random mass murdering. Some say it's the mixing of cultures, but I say it's the exploiting of other people by the United States and European countries and others, a consistent pattern of it. It's the WAY we're mixing, bot the simple fact of mixing. It's an example of a way we should not act. But if we all intermix peacefully, eventually we won't think of other people as different, we'll all just be humans. I mean, we already are, but for some reason people get really hung up on differences.

I also think there are people who have fostered this left/right hate division that is growing deeper and deeper, and I think the purpose is social control, either keeping us preoccupied or undermining the stability of our nation. I think we're not enemies and we should remember that.

House committee subpoenas Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig over Trump tax returns

A House committee issued subpoenas Friday ordering Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Charles Rettig to turn over President Trump’s tax returns by next Friday at 5 p.m., according to copies of the subpoenas provided by the committee.

House Ways and Means Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-Mass.) authorized the subpoenas following months of disagreements with the Trump administration over whether federal law mandates Congress can obtain the records.

“The IRS is under a mandatory obligation to provide the information requested,” the subpoena states. “The IRS has had more than four weeks to comply with the Committee’s straightforward request. Therefore, please see the enclosed subpoena.”

Trump refused to release his tax returns during the 2016 presidential campaign in a break with decades of precedent from previous presidents. Legal experts have said Mnuchin’s refusal to turn over the returns is unprecedented, noting a 1924 law that explicitly gives lawmakers the authority to seek the records.

A Treasury Department spokeswoman confirmed receipt of the subpoena.

The subpoenas come amid a widening legal conflict between House Democrats and the White House over a range of oversight issues, with the administration invoking executive privilege to prevent Trump's former counsel from giving certain records to Congress.

Neal first demanded six years of Trump’s personal and business returns, from 2013 to 2018, in letters to the administration last month.

Neal’s subpoenas demand that for these years Mnuchin and Rettig turn over Trump’s individual income tax returns, all “administrative files” such as affidavits for those income tax returns, and income tax returns for a number of Trump’s business holdings such as the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, an umbrella entity that controls dozens of other businesses including the Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida.

The Trump administration has rejected Democrats’ requests for the president’s tax returns as violations of taxpayer privacy, with an attorney hired by the president and congressional Republicans echoing similar concerns. Mnuchin repeatedly asked for more time to respond to Neal’s request before rejecting it outright earlier this month.

“I think we’re coming to the point where we’re running out of letters to write,” Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. (D-N.J.), a member of the Ways and Means Committee, said in an interview Thursday.

If Mnuchin and Rettig do not turn over the returns, Neal could respond by going to a congressional body to authorize a lawsuit in federal court against the two Trump administration officials. That body, the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group, is controlled by Democrats.

The subpoena could bolster Neal’s position in federal court because it will help him demonstrate he pursued all possible avenues to obtain the returns before filing a lawsuit against the administration, said Steve Rosenthal, a legal expert at the Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan think tank. That, at least in theory, will make it less likely for the court to strike down his claim on procedural grounds.

“A week now could save many months later,” Rosenthal said.

Even if House Democrats receive Trump’s tax returns, there is still no guarantee they will be made public. Legal experts say leaking the returns is a violation of privacy law that could be punishable with up to five years in prison, a provision intended to ensure taxpayer privacy, said George Yin, a legal expert at the University of Virginia.

Earlier this week, the New York Times published a report, based on data from 10 years of Trump’s federal tax returns, showing Trump reported more than $1 billion in losses to the IRS and lost more money than almost every other U.S. taxpayer from 1985 to 1994.

Earlier on Friday, Rep. Kevin Brady (Tex.), the ranking Republican on the Ways and Means Committee, cautioned Neal against issuing a subpoena, “Such actions would be an abuse of the committee’s oversight powers and further examples of the Democrat majority’s coordinated attempt to weaponize the tax code,” he argued.

It'll be interesting to see if people like Mnuchin or McGahn break. This is tremendous pressure, and it's only going to get worse.

Have you considered that perhaps it's extremism that's the problem rather than specifically which ideological extreme you follow? Sure, extreme left wing ideologies in the form of communism have resulted in enormous numbers of people dead. But so has extreme right wing ideologies.

Sure seems to me that the problem happens when people insist that their way is the only way and that their ideology is so perfect that it must be taken as far as it possibly can and made into the core ideology of every aspect of every citizens life.
