The 2019 Trump Presidency Thread

The Dutch bought the Island of Manhattan for approximately 60 Dutch Guilders ($1,000-ish adjusted for inflation). Yet our President cannot convince a man who has nothing to accept something. There's something to be said for skills that can't be taught, like negotiation for instance.

trump in 2015 to the daily signal said:
I’m not going to cut Social Security like every other Republican and I’m not going to cut Medicare or Medicaid...

his proposed budget cuts all 3.

he's a real real straight-shooter!

This makes no sense. Either he is guilty and needs to be taken out of office, or he isn't. The effort required isn't part of the equation. Simple right and wrong, not 'I dont feel like it', that's a teenager not taking out the trash.

I disagree. I think it makes a lot of sense. Impeachment without a 67% vote to convict in the Senate is basically meaningless. The House can't remove the President by itself.

I think Pelosi is one of the most gifted political minds in Washington...she knows that anything short of a devastating revelation in the Mueller report would fail to reach that number. Impeachment in the House followed by a failure to convict in the Senate would be nothing but a meaningless gesture and would be easily construed as a victory by Trump and the right wing media.

I know that's what you and every other Trump supporter would love to happen, because that would be serious ammunition on the campaign trail.

Also part of her argument was that it would divide the country too much if he was impeached which is probably true... better to let him be voted out (hopefully) so then you can't claim a coup (at least not as assertively). And yes it would be a disaster to try to impeach him and fail, not only would it waste money and effort but like mal said it would be ammunition for the other side. It does seem exceedingly unlikely you'd reach 67% so it seems kind of pointless to try.

president trump in a recent breitbart interview said:
I can tell you I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump – I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough — until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad,
i honestly don't know what to make of this. it reads like an ominous, divisive threat :(

Without the benefit of context, I would interpret it as saying that he can't be impeached without starting a civil war.

Well didn't he say something about white supremacist or the like being "fine people" or something like that. I can't remember exactly.

^ he said there were some very fine people on both sides...

trump ran on uniting - is he uniting americans? how?

here's sarah sanders doing her part to unite the country:

[tweet]1110350183685128198[/tweet]

is this really the best use of her time?

i hate gloating like this - i get it, they feel like they were vindicated - it does nothing but divide :\

LOL SHE REALLY POSTED THAT THAT IS REAL OMG HAHHAHHAHAHAHAHhahahahaha

I love it

Go Sarah. You're a total waste of $180,000 USD a year and this is why we have people losing their minds and shooting others! Or themselves! Or that guy who shot up the Republican baseball team (NO COMMENT but you can only imagine how I feel about that one!), or national socialist Caesar Sayoc, or white traditional conservative Timothy McVeigh, or anarchist-type Ted Kaczynski, or ...

She didn't make it, it's obviously made by NYPost as given in the email address to 'vote' or whatever.

Her tweeting it, however...
Lack of class - yes.
Useful - no.
Waste of taxpayer time and money - yes.
Undermines her ability to communicate effectively - yes.

I actually would be MORE impressed by her if she DID make it herself.

Way to not promote division, White House... very mature.

At least intelligent conservatives get what a joke she is. Thank you TLB.

Fuck the division part, the division's great. She is just a total waste as a human being and I see no redeemable qualities. Not to mention the sheer quantity of her.

She's an inspiration for little girls all across America of what not to be when they grow up. An inspiration to have a moral compass. An inspiration to have a purpose, when they grow up, unlike Sarah.

Trump threatens to close border with Mexico next week

WASHINGTON ? President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to close America?s southern border or large sections of it next week, a potentially drastic step affecting the economies of both the U.S. and Mexico, if Mexico does not halt illegal immigration ?immediately.?

"It could mean all trade? with Mexico, Trump said when questioned by reporters in Florida. ?We will close it for a long time. I am not kidding around.?

Trump has previously threatened to close the border ? including at a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Thursday night ? but this time was different as he gave a timetable. The White House did not immediately respond to questions about whether his possible action would apply to commercial and air travel, but a substantial closure could have an especially heavy impact on cross-border communities from San Diego to South Texas, as well as supermarkets, factories, and other businesses across the country that rely on trade from Mexico.

?If Mexico doesn?t immediately stop ALL illegal immigration coming into the United States through our Southern Border, I will be CLOSING the Border, or large sections of the Border, next week,? Trump said in a tweet. ?This would be so easy for Mexico to do, but they just take our money and ?talk.'?

Trump?s declaration came a day after Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said his country was doing its part to fight migrant smuggling. Criminal networks charge thousands of dollars a person to move migrants through Mexico, increasingly toward remote sections of the U.S.-Mexico border in large groups.

?We are going to do everything we can to help,? Lopez Obrador said. ?We don?t in any way want a confrontation with the U.S. government.?
A senior Homeland Security official on Friday suggested Trump was referring to the ongoing surge of mostly Central American families crossing the border from Mexico.

The official said the U.S. might close designated ports of entry to re-deploy staff to help process parents and children.

Ports of entry are official crossing points that are used by residents and commercial vehicles. The official, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity, did not specify which ports the administration was considering closing, but said only that closures were ?on the table.?

Customs and Border Protection commissioner Kevin McAleenan said Wednesday that 750 border inspectors would be reassigned to deal with the growing number of migrant families, and the DHS official said Friday that the department was seeking volunteers from other agencies to help.

Democratic and Republican lawmakers have fought over whether there actually is a ?crisis? at the border, particularly amid Trump?s push for a border wall, which he claims will solve immigration problems, though a wall wouldn?t keep out families who cross the border at official points so they can surrender and be detained.

The president called on Congress to immediately change what he said were weak U.S. immigration laws, which he blamed on Democrats. The Department of Homeland Security wants the authority to detain families for longer and more quickly deport children from Central America who arrive at the border on their own. The department argues those policy changes would stop families from trying to enter the U.S.

I actually believe Trump doesn't understand that Mexico is a valuable trading partner.

One day? week? month? of this could cost Trump some votes. People don't forget being hurt economically. Ask federal workers (most of them).
