The 2019 Trump Presidency Thread

I just wanna say I think everyone here is cool but due to the nature of politics I will be posting in less political stuff.

It's a shame everyone is so intense about it... yet here we are. They got us being all tribal. Understandable, man.

It's crazy, I haven't looked much to compare the style and eloquence of threads in any platform to see if the persona of the president at the time influenced the same in discussing said president but the mates who are active in these discussions do seem to have changed completely no matter what they think of him

In 10 years it will be interesting to see how many fell out over liking trump or not and how dumb they feel .

Trump Admits He Lied About Mexico Paying for the Wall

A quote from the article that says it all:

“When during the campaign, I would say ‘Mexico is going to pay for it,’ obviously, I never said this, and I never meant they’re gonna write out a check, I said they’re going to pay for it. They are,”

Smooth...

The Trump thread sin here are going to make a great time capsule one day.

It's always been that way. Anyone else remember the Willie Horton ads run by George HW Bush's campaign? An ad so in-the-gutter no one wanted to be associated with it. When political dirty-trickster Lee Atwater was dying, he expressed regret over running the ad. Roger Stone said "Bush and Atwater would wear it to their graves."

Or how about four years later when then Attorney General William Barr (and may be again) told the FBI field office in Little Rock, Arkansas and the US Attorney in Little Rock to open an investigation into failed savings and loans connected to the Clintons? The US Attorney in Little Rock said the case had no merit, but thanks to the dogged work of L. Jean Lewis, who just would not give up, we got Whitewater, out of which we got Paula Jones, out of which we got impeachment.

I heard someone just the other day refer to Obama as "that Muslim."

I find it especially insane that Christians, who voted for trump, think that Obama, who's definitely a Christian, is a Muslim. And trump, who's definitely an atheist, is a Christian.

Talk about seeing what you wanna see.

Someone I know, a naturalized U.S. citizen (i.e., a legal immigrant with U.S. citizenship) explained to me that Trump cares about people being safe and keeping illegal immigrants out, which needs to be done, so they are pro-Wall and pro-shutdown.

This person was allowed here in first place after a conflict in their region, would not be allowed based on their education level or skills for a visa, and isn't Caucasian. In other words, not the kind of immigrant Trump wants on this side of the Wall.

I pointed this out and I kept asking things because I had to understand; it eventually got down to "well, I don't keep track of it that closely."

I about died. WTF?

But his middle name is Hussein. Obviously he's a Muslim!

Trump is openly contemptuous of Mike Pence's
religious faith, asking someone after Pence left the room "if he got any Jesus on him."

Cognitive dissonance...

I know a guy, he's a cool guy, my girlfriend's dad's friend. He and I were talking about Trump, because he's a Trump supporter. He was kind of sheepish about it, too, when I asked why. He said it's because all the politicians are corrupt, and so is he, but at least he gets stuff done and is a straight shooter. So I started pointing out instances where he completely went back on things he had said earlier and things he's doing that he himself once said are the mark of a weak leader. He was like... well, he was just trying to get elected, I understand (ie, he's a liar, but that's cool - ie, not a straight shooter after all! 8(). This guy is really big on the environment, too, it's one of the biggest issues for him. So I asked him how he justifies Trump repealing so many environmental protections that have been so difficult for us to get over the decades. His answer was basically "well... I haven't heard about that, if it's true, that's not good." I was like, dude, it's true, if you follow his actions, a big part of his actions have been the undermining of environmental protections (ie - I don't follow it that closely). The conversation ended with "well, he's not perfect and I wish he wasn't so crass, but he's better than Hillary".

I think that about sums it up. People have cast their lot with Trump and to admit they were conned by this guy would be too much to admit. So you fixate on some simple talking points (rapists and terrorists and human traffickers are pouring in through the border in cataclysmic amounts and only a border wall can stop it; he's anti-establishment; at least he's a straight shooter; at least he's funny; etc; oh and we mustn't forget the BUT HILLARY) and stick your head in the sand as far as what he's actually done.

"Look, he's moving to stop requiring industrial operations to install carbon scrubbers. Carbon scrubbers have greatly improved smog and are important"
"Yeah but Hillary's emails!"

I’m pretty sure the way trump is threatening the country to get funding for his wall is a form of blackmail, I mean what do I know I’m only in law school8)
All I know is that this government shutdown better be finished soon because if they can’t pay me my tax refunds, they’re going to need to build a wall around that White House lol

I don't find that surprising. The presidents love of fast food is well known.

killing yourself eating Big Macs in bed is one thing, getting chicken nuggets catered to the White House is another. Did you see the pretty display of dipping sauces in the center of the table? That was a nice touch. We have a 72 year old child as president.

^and a cheap one. "...paid for by me", he bragged.
Yeah, because you shut the government down, you master negotiator you... smh.

He's too dumb to know these guys are basically professional athletes who have spent their whole lives working on their bodies and overall health. They eat real food prepared by chefs, not garbage soaked with grease rolled in salt.
